Thank God for Armada

By Darth evil, in Star Wars: Armada

X-wing S&V and wave 7 are awesome. Adds more to the game.

The Assault Frigate MKII is sexy, and I will get two.

The price is fair compared to many games on the market that hold the popular vote. Most other companies models do not come painted and cost more.

Negativity is always louder then the most positive sentiment. It is just human nature to be miserable with change.

Some people like X-Wing Wave 7 other don't, I'm in between. I know Star Wars isn't a realistic physics game but something like the Conner Net I just to get in the vastness of space and all that. But still...

I own a fair amount of X-Wing, 2 - 4 of most ships, Battle Foam, custom obstacles so I have more than most and I'm looking forward to the Raider. I like X-Wing and have enjoyed it very much but what keeps gnawing at me is the card distribution. Buying new ships to fix old ones. Not getting enough in the new ships to use that upgrade on the old ships. Some don't see this as an issue, other's do. I do. For Imperial Assault I'm stopping with Wave 1, it completes the game. For X-Wing I don't know if I'll buy into Wave 7. Of course I can play at home but that will end any real X-Wing gaming at my LGS, at least for me, if I don't get the new cards, ships, powers, buffs, fixes, etc...

If I get into Armada will I be facing the same issues? That's unknown. I really like the idea of Capital ships, reminds of of Empire at War but on a Table. I like the multi-turn think ahead of the game. Maybe I'll get into it. For now it's wait and see  and I was very excited about Armada and then Wave 7 came out. I just don't want to fall in another rabbit hole. I've considered Armada plus Wave 1 and 2 only. But again I'll endup not being competitive at the LGS so.

I regret not preordering two AFs

so hard to fit one and anything but another AF or two Corvettes @ 300 points :(

the gallant haven + yavaris combo will have to wait till wave 2

I got 2 for the express purpose of large obscene fights against Beatty

I gotta say I'm not unimpressed with wave 7 at all, I became totally turned off the game when the TIE phantom trashed all ships and builds that didn't involve a big ship with a turret and/or another TIE phantom. I'm still a bit bitter about that :( :(

To me, Armada is already infinitely better because no ship has done away with a large number of other options.

WTF, is a TIE Phantom? The most badassery fighter the Empire has is the TIE Defender. Don't tell me FFG just made some ship up like the Raider-class ship in Armada.

Nah, the phantom was around before (at least in Empire At War: Forces of Corruption, which also gave Defenders to the empire players)

I love X-wing, and still do, and always will- though I am getting to the point where I don't feel inclined to buy EVERY ship in each new wave that FFG releases.

That being said, I think Armada is going to quickly claim first place in my heart. Why? Because Armada just FEELS like Star Wars. X-wing feels like a dog-fighting game with Star Wars ships (if that makes sense- and even then, it doesn't REALLY feel like a dogfighting game until you get down to the last ship or two on each side and you are trying to outwit and outmaneuver each other, unless one of those ships is a turret, in which case it doesn't feel like dogfighting anymore).

Armada though... Even with just one core set you have those moments that just hit the sweet spot. You know the ones:

When that poor Rebel ship gets caught under the barrage of turbolaser fire from a Star Destroyer...

When 1 or 2 x-wing squadrons get engulfed by a swarm of TIE fighters (a REAL swarm too, not a measly 6 or 7 fighters)...

When 1 squad of X-wings slips past the TIEs to do a bombing run on a Star Destroyer, landing the critical hit that takes the SD out of the fight...

That to me feels like Star Wars. And we haven't even gotten the Imperial SD or Home One expansions yet. :)

This brought a tear to my eye and expresses what I feel at heart.

I think the thing that I appreciate the most about X-Wing and Armada is that they feel totally different. X-Wing has a ton of options, and Wave 6 add a whole new sense of freshness. Armada is newer, and I'm still figuring it out. I like the six-turn limit, and the objectives. I can't wait for more ships to come along.

I love the feeling from both games.

X-Wing involves more instinct and guess work on where you land, arcs and timing. Very fun when you perform a maneuver that lands you inside of your opponent's formation without bumping and taking a range one shot for the kill.

Armada gives me a War Room feel, carefully planing fleet movements and getting reports of their progress as I contemplate the next move.

Both well done and worth the investment.

I couldn't have said it better.

The Tie Phantom has existed since 1995 when it was introduced in Rebel Assault 2: The Hidden Empire. It later appeared in Star Wars Empire at War: Forces of Corruption.

It has actually been my all time favorite Tie since its creation in 95 (love that shape), with the Defender as 2nd. Wave 4 of X-Wing (which introduced both the Phantom and Defender to the game), is what made me buy into the game in the first place. Can't wait for both to hit Armada.
