Thank God for Armada

By Darth evil, in Star Wars: Armada

Because X-wing is really not impressing me lately.

I own a decent amount of x wing...

But I anticipate Armada being the game I love more.

Just more my "scale", and th capital ships are so essential to me, when it comes to Star Wars combat.

Really glad I didn't buy into X-Wing(s of War). Played WoW and it was fun, but didn't completely grab me so I figured X-Wing would be more of the same, just Star Wars. I'm sure there would be differences, but not enough for me.

Always been a capitol ship fan, from Trafalgar, to Jutland, to Midway and Iron Bottom Sound, it's capitol ships all the way. I watched, and waited. One fine day a post from FFG on my Facebook feed announcing Armada showed me that my wait was over (albeit a bit figuratively at this point). Star Destroyers were coming to my table top, and it was good.

I like both and will keep playing both.

I think it will be harder for me to get a game locally of Armada than X Wing. Mostly because of the recentness of Armada (I STILL havnt managed to get a game yet). Also the price point entry is a lot higher for Armada so there is that too.

Armada will run into the same issues of little known, wonky looking EU ships in good time. There aren't that many ships seen on screen and there are even fewer good looking EU big ships. See the x-wing/tie fighter video games for examples.

Hell, the upcoming Assault Frigate is a prime example and it's already almost here.

I don't get the Armada enthusiasm coming in after the Wave 7 reveals

From a star wars lore perspective, the ships may seem desperate, but from a gameplay perspective (i.e, the important one considering that X-wing miniatures is a game first and foremost) the ships make 100% sense given the mechanics the designers are wishing to push for that wave. And, as Mauser pointed out, ******* Assault Frigate. The EU is Entirely Unavoidable.

I do understand excitement for Armada, though, because it was a deeply complex strategic game that has yet to be polluted by something as head-slappingly contrary to the game's core mechanics as turrets

I love how much every decision matters in Armada ^_^ and I hate how I could essentially be replaced by an RNG when playing against turrets in X-wing <_<

X-Wing has given me long sessions full of enjoyment. I find I don't regret buying into it as heavily as I have.

Wave 7 is disappointing, but if anything it allows me to move over into Armada until X-Wing waves become more impressive. For now I'm happy with the break... I think sooner or later frustration with the green dice would have forced me to quit the game one way or another. The presence of scum kind of cut off my enthusiasm at the knees to begin with... I wasn't as happy as others with this new faction.

Armada is more expensive, but every time I play I feel like it's the beginning of something awesome and more mature than X-Wing is/was. I'm eager to see what new ships come out regardless of their EU origins (I guess except more scum and Vong). I don't think there's a single ship in the EU that I would go "Really?" for. Unlike X-Wing, I'm not hot to have any one particular ship depicted. The MC40a and Nebulon-B2 would be nice, but I don't think they're essential.

I gotta say I'm not unimpressed with wave 7 at all, I became totally turned off the game when the TIE phantom trashed all ships and builds that didn't involve a big ship with a turret and/or another TIE phantom. I'm still a bit bitter about that :( :(

To me, Armada is already infinitely better because no ship has done away with a large number of other options.

I really fell out of touch with X-Wing when S&V came out, it was just too much for me.

Armada is more my scale anyway, I alread much prefer the mechanics and thinking behind this game, much less it's execution. Still, the YV-666 does look really nice...I'm awfully tempted to get one...XD

I enjoy xwing for as little as I've played it... I got into it just this past December as I bought the game for my 8 year old. He and I played some, but he is more interested in ipad/xbox--go figure! Anyways, so I've played a few games against other adults and they were always fun.

The only thing that I can't say I love about xwing is the amount of upgrades that do things that upon first reading of the card you don't realize how it fits in the bigger picture. Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting against the rules/upgrades more than I'm tactically fighting against my opponent.

Setting that aside, I've found xwing to be really enjoyable. I also have wings of glory and like playing that as well.

I'm not sure why or what is so disappointing to people with wave 7 in xwing. It seems to me that it's continuing along with adding a new action type (slam), new models, and essentially more of what everyone seemed to like about the game when I was reading about it a year or so ago.

I am very happy with Armada, and Xwing is a fine game as well. It seems to me Armada is less about memorization (what is the dial of ship xyz), and more about limiting your opponents options by proper planning (eg you can either fly into the minefield, crash into my ship, or move into my front arc, unless you planned a maneuver command 2 turns ago)

Or, perhaps more simply, armada makes you plan 3 turns ahead, every turn, whereas you can play xwing on a much more reactionary basis.

Plus, you can make up some massively awesome Star Wars battles by playing the game.

I just went to a game shop last night and expressed my interest in Armada, because I'm looking forward to it and already love the game or two with a friend I've had with the core set. It's bare bones right now, sure, but with more ships it will become pretty awesome just like X-Wing did.

However... Sadly... I was not met with the same enthusiasm =(

Most appear to be first, put off by the price point. "50 dollars per ship? Ya forget that." ... And then a lot of people seem put off by the movement mechanic in general.

I find this sad, because I'm still super excited to play some games of this. I'm really looking forward to it! I fear I will not have a diverse group of people to play against =(

people put off by the price are full of ****

it's like they never heard of online discounts :P and that only the ISD is $50 (retail) and it doesn't even exist yet

the rest is all about being willing to give demo games for the weary

You could tell them that most ships are $20 or $30, that being reduced to around $13 or $20 online. That price point is a lot more appealing to me.

If you follow that line of reasoning, then in X-Wing it's $100 per ship.

I mean if you're going to look at the cost of the most expensive ship, one you will most likely only need 1 of in the first place. Then you should do the same for X-Wing.

Most ships for Amada are in the $30 or less range, and unlike X-Wing you only need 2 of most ships.

Preaching to the choir guys! People are just set in their ways I think at my store =( I have a friend I'll play with. Maybe as more ships get released and I keep playing with him, OTHERS WILL CONVERT!!!! >:3 That's just the feed back right now =(

Also, I understand this actually, a lot of them are loyalists to their store. They buy their ships mostly from the store because they want to give something back for having a really nice [and, I do mean really nice] place to sit down with others and play games. It's a incredible place! I intend to buy a few models through them just to support them! However, I am poor, and will buy most models through amazon.

Me personally, I have lost interest in X-wing. I'm a strictly Imperial player and with every new wave it seems that before Scum came Rebels were getting better and better ships and or pilot abilities. Where as the Empire gets average pilot abilities or really over costed ships.. I.E. Tie Defender/Phantom. Hell, they even nerfed the Phantom some so the Empire doesn't even have that to lean on so much now. I do believe the Raider's Tie Advanced upgrades will bring that more under control, but my opinion is that Rebels will always get better and the Empire will always fall short. Scum is in the middle ground, of taking things from both sides plus like so many others, I too was always more into the capital ship scene. After Jedi lightsaber fights cap ship scenes are is what defines Star Wars, again only my opinion. I can also see people being turned away because of the pricing of armada, but several folks have already hit the point. In Armada you'll only be fielding 2 cap ships, 3 tops, so you only need the core set, and one expansion to get the full feel of the game. With X-wing you need to possibly buy 2-4 copies of one ship for your fleet. adding those expansions up is easily the cost of an Armada expansion not to mention how many people bought more than one X-wing core set? I'm not even going into the cost of X-wings Epic ships, but you see where X-wing is also as expensive to Armada, so I do feel that Armada like X-wing will slowly gain steam until it to is a powerhouse.. Not that it isn't already, In my neck of the woods it has a very strong following.

I don't mind people coming into Armada for any reason.

Despite some disappointment with the new wave, I'm at all planning to get out of X-Wing, nor am I seeing Armada as being in competition for my love (but it is for my time), which is causing me to think less of either game. Much of my Armada-playing community is also my X-Wing-playing community. I'm looking forward to playing campaigns that involve both X-Wing and Armada for a fuller and deeper gaming experience.

I will buy Wave 7, and continue to support X-Wing. New ships equal new ways to play the game. I just hope that, between X-Wing and Armada, my wallet doesn't reach up and throttle me.

I like both games wave 7 should add new elements to the game, people are jumping to conclusions about wave 7 before everything is released on it. Armada is fun game also will only buy rebel side for now i think.

While I will probably buy Armada one day (probably Christmas), it is just too expensive to pick up on a whim and I'm not sold on the quality of the models. As well my boys and I are having great fun playing X-wing and they are excited by the upcoming wave 7 models.

the models are of gob-smacking quality, which is typical of FFG

the only wrinkle is that the initial shipment of core-set came with unwashed (i.t.o painting, I don't mean they're dirty) corvettes and CR-90s

They weren't unwashed, the wash was just very light. I'm pretty sure they came out as intended.

Just what was intended wasn't a great choice on the designers part... The wash was too thin/light.

Same thing happened with X-Wing when it first came out, the first run models were nice looking but the second run on forward looked way better when they got the machines fine tuned.
