Official Wave 8 Speculation Thread!

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

There's a whole lot of alphabet left (Arabic and Greek)...

Tau and Rho Squadron Pilots would be a good start!

I'm betting that Wave 8 will be focused around Episode 7 and will include a new The Force Awakens starter set. Probably very similar to the current starter set but with an X-Wing and 2 TIE Fighters based on the new movie. An updated Rulebook using Episode 7 images and including FAQ and rule changes since the first edition. And this cards will provide the much anticipated "X-Wing fix".

If they really do this i might get a bit angry. Because in the end its just another paint job variance on the model for ships that most ppl already have a trillion times.

Angry at who? FFG? Lucasfilm? Abrams?

What would you do if you were FFG?

Whatever the ships were going to be in the new movie, it's inevitable that they would be put into X-Wing - not just for licensing/contractual reasons, but for BUSINESS reasons also.

If the new movie is any good (and arguably even if it isn't) there are going to be fans wanting to see/play with their stubby nosed jigsaw-winged X-Wings, their black ties with rear canon, and "cogs" - something that a repaint of existing models does not address.

FFG are going to cater for this - wouldn't you?

Did FFG design the ships for the new movie? Nope. If you're going to be angry, take it to Lucasfilm.

How about a pilot ability that allows you to modify your pilot skill up or down during combat.

Either to any value or to 1 or 2 up or down maybe.

Want to shoot before that squad mate, sure.

Want to shoot after so that he takes the stress from Rebel captive, sure.

Well if they actually address model differences I'm ok with it. If they just repaint their existing model and its basically the same ship ingame all we get are new cards to have more duplicates of ships that we already have at the amount we want to play in our games. I hated the Aces packs for that they gave more more of the same ships then i ever wanted to play in a single game just after their respective introduction waves.

The question to me is what brings it to the game?

Also there are tons of options how to make money with those "new" ships appearing in the movie, not only X-Wing.

Ah - I completely mistook your point. I thought you were upset with them making new models when they could just provide a re-paint and new cards.

I feel your pain - I just finished buying my fourth Interceptor the day before they announced Imperial Aces...
Overall, despite my surplus of squints, A-Wings and B-Wings... I'm glad they did it at least for the extra cards/options the Aces packs brought. I can understand why they did Aces packs, but for those of us who were collecting rapaciously from the start, it did lead to a lot of extra plastic and expense ... if I ever get to play Epic, then at least I'll be able to put them to good use lol

If it wasn't for the new Extra Munitions, I'd think it'd be nice to see some good ol fashioned TUGs for Imperial support (since Imperials don't really have a small support ship). They'd follow Bombers and Advanced to replenish their missiles and such, but it doesn't look like they'll be needed.

I like the idea of other ships from the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter games, like the

-R-41 Starchaser

-Combat Utility Vehicle

-Tie Avengers

-T-Wings

-Assault Gunboats

-Cygnus Escort Shuttle

-Missile Boat

-Telgon Corp Assault Shuttle (they should even make a crew card "Boarding Party" When this ship is touching a large or Huge ship, discard this card to cause that ship 1 damage and discard one of their crew cards").

Tie Avengers I AM REALY Fan of this ship pease FFG

No Avenger. Ep 7 ties stole their cupcakes.

This isnt 40k. Please no Tau. ;)

Tie Aggressor seems a good fit. Existing Art, and an Auxilliary Arc or turret slot would fit well into the Imperial fleet.

Punishing One is a pretty solid choice, and has an existing model in Armada. Making the turret an upgrade slot would also give the Scum large ships some uniqueness to them- And the Punishing One's turret was an aftermarket modification by Dengar, after all. The scurg seems a good fit for the second Scum ship (2 Scum ships, 1 Imperial, 1 Rebel gives each faction 11 ships)- It gives them a heavy bomber, and it was in Armada. That being said, they want to get the Episode V Bounty Hunters in, so the Mist Hunter is another possibility.

The Rebels are the trickiest for me to guess. A turret-less large ship would be nice for diversity, though. They've kind of run out of fighters apart from the T-wing and H-wing, and those are both very obscure and don't have a clear niche in the current Rebel Fleet.

Regarding Episode VII: I could swear I've heard somewhere on here that since they had Wave VI-VIII planned out prior to The Force Awakens being revealed in any real detail, so I don't think we'll see the New X-wings and Tie Fighters in Wave 8. We might see a new starter set with TFA ships, though.

Plugging the Starwing Assault Gunboat yet again! I'd love for the Imps to have a BTL-A4 Y-Wing equivalent that yet has its own flavour.

Scum, well, aside from more bounty hunters, I'd vote for the Z'ceptor. I'd think of it like a Scum B-Wing, and I'd trust FFG to make it unique. Something more customisable than the Kihraxz but less reliable, perhaps?

I have no idea what the Rebels are due. Maybe the thing on the cover of Stay On Target? So long as it doesn't step on the toes of the K-Wing I guess? Either that or the H-Wing, about which I don't have a strong opinion. Nothing against another Koensayr ship though.

Wave 7.5 Scum Aces! Repaints and possibly fixes/better pilots for the StarViper and Scyk is my guess.

As for Wave 8, Dengar (Jumpmaster) and Zuckuss/4LOM (G-1A) for Scum, ARC-170 for Rebels, and a turreted TIE Sentinel (a long shot) for the Empire.

I think it's a bit too soon for scum aces. There need to be at least one more scum wave first I think.

How about the X-4 Gunship as a Rebel Large turretless ship?

Would fit with the heavy use of Star Wars Galaxies material so far.

Here's your daily fix, X-Wingers. Enjoy.

^Nah. We already have the K-Wing and Hound's Tooth that meets the capacity of "ugly as sin" ships that are allowed in this game.

Thank you for registering your opinion in the most negative way possible. This comment has been recorded and may be evidence against you in a court of forum-law. The court clerk will be in touch with you concerning your court fees. The fine amount will be on the back of your ticket. Have a nice day.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Spike. And the Hounds Tooth looks frickin' amazing.

Thats a nice piece of artwork here. But ... do proton torpedoes even work in planetary atmospheres? It don't look like this Gunboat is attacking in space on this picture...

Those are missiles, I believe.

Proton Torpedoes and Concussion Missiles do in fact work in planetary atmospheres according to the EU, at least.

Thematic ships we expect to see:

The rest of the bounty Hunters : Mist Hunter and Punishing One. Also doesn't Greedo have a ship? Wouldn't mind seeing Greedo's ship.

Roles that could stand to be filled:

Scum Huge Ship - Wild Karrde seems to be the most likely and best fit that I'm aware of. Would love to see some of the people that would likely come with it.

Scum Ordnance Platform - Skipray could fill thise role yes? Mara Jade and some other from Karrde's group could be pilots.

Fluff that I'd really love to see:

Thrawn. One of the most badass dudes ever. Obviously. Probably lets you setup all asteroids, or deploy all ships first, or both.

Starkiller / Rogue Shadow. I fully understand that he's not really germane to the mechanics of a close-quarters dogfighting game, but he is my absolute favorite character from the EU. He is fun, and Sam Witwer is awesome. And yes, if he were to actually be made canon his power level would need to be heavily toned down, for balance.

I hope we don't get Mist Hunter without a tractor beam and an unreliable voice computer.

Regarding Greedo, he never actually had a ship. He was tricked out of his share of a bounty before he intended to buy the Manka Hunter and then stole power couplings from the Millennium Falcon but was caught so he never actually made up the funds. He did later rent a small ship to follow Han Solo at one point but it didn't even have weapons.

Alpha Class XG-1 Assault Gunboat for the Empire

Jumpmaster 5000 and and G1-A for Scum

???????? Rebels

I want to say the YT-2000, but I also want to see the Azzameen family flying together...

You know, that's an area that really hasn't been explored much: effects and abilities that alter the initial game set-up. You've got objectives in Armada that do it. Anyone that plays Doomtown: Reloaded knows about how Grifters have abilities that can only be used at the start of the game. Seems like there's some fertile ground in X-Wing for abilities that extend your set-up range or alter the order or other similar effects. Things like a named pilot who lets you deploy all ships of his type at once, or in reverse pilot skill order. A long-range scout who can mess around with obstacle placement. Heck, maybe even borrow from Armada and have a squadron commander who takes up a crew slot on one ship but who provides a buff to all ships.
