I love this idea, mostly when thinking of it in light of Warmahordes' tier lists. Encouraging fluffy lists without severely hampering effectiveness is a good thing in my book, and can be used to put in cool benefits and restrictions you'd never be able to see with regular upgrade cards.
Is it time for formations / tier lists?
Not to mention that what's obvious to one person is unthinkable to another. It could be that it just never occured to them. Maybe they're reading this right now and smacking their foreheads
One can only hope. A mere ~300 views compared to the wave 7 announcement's 3,000.

That's why we keep this on the main page
Seriously, I think this would actually increase their design space, making it easy to give bonuses while limiting them through what you have to have in your list to use them. I've never played Warhammer or Warmahordes, so this never would have occurred to me.
Edited by Audio WeaselPeople are welcome to keep it bumped with any ideas they might have, but I'm not going to shamelessly bump it myself, not unless I have something pertinent to add.
I wouldn't make 'em cost points, and I'd limit them to 1 per 100pts worth of list, if not 1 only.
Rogue Squadron
Requires at least 3 X-Wings
When within range 1 of two other friendly X-Wings, an X-Wing may reroll one die when attacking or defending.
Handing out rerolls seems like a lazy way to make the formation good (and this might be OP), but this would make Named, Biggs, 2x rookies totally be a Thing.

I was thinking 3 named pilots for Rogue Squadron. It would be bit strange to have Red Squadron Pilots hanging out with Rogue Squadron, wouldn't it?

See, I was thinking the entire squad had to be Xwings (or in the case of Epic 100 points worth)
Maybe. My personal preference is balance > fun > fluff, and so I'd personally not mind the slight disconnect between squadron labels on the pilots and formation name, if the end result was more flexible and got more X-Wings (generic or named) on the table.
But I'm also not in charge of brand purity for FFG; reasonable people could disagree.
No, I can definitely live with stretching the bounds of fluff for the sake of a good gaming experience, it's just that mixing the naming conventions would be a little... dissonant for me. But that's me, and like I said, I'd live.
I have no problem with them stretching the fluff, so long as it doesn't get ridiculous.
You will not fall to the bottom of the page, thread.
You will rise!
The more i think about this concept, the more I love it. It's great for not only fun stuff down the road, but this creates the space for easy-to-implement fixes (and let's face it, there will always be a need for fixes of some sort) without 'default load-out title' cards. Want to implement an X Wing fix but can't decide between a few competing ideas? Take each idea and build them into different squadron cards. Hand the choice over to the players from there.
Want to see more of [ship X] on the table? Want to see more varied lists? Create squadrons (Like the Delta card you already posited) that directly reward putting those models into play.
...I have an irrational aversion to most house rules for some reason, but this kind of demands an exception. Anyone know a good place to get stock Star Wars art (that is good)? i think I might want to make a couple of these cards.
Now this would be neat... If I didn't have more models to buy into (the woe/joy of being a new player).
However I think that these rules should be looked at. Instead of having everyone create their own house rules for trench run events (as an example), we could pull from a list, have 3 squads of X wings, one squad must be Luke, biggs, Wedge, etc. 3 squad ties, 1 must be Vader, night beast, dark curse, 1 squad y wings, etc....
Or out of events, just having a squadron of 3 or 4 ships would be fun, however, maybe they could be forced to fly in a loose formation.
Ex: If a friendly ship moves beyond shooting range 3 of an ally to whom he/she is assigned with as a squadron, and does not rejoin that squadron, or forms up with another squadron in two turns, count that ship as having fled into hyperspace. (I'm thinking of 6x6 or bigger playing space, sine so many models would be included).

Hoenstly, I think 6x6 would be a bit hard to reach across. With the 3x6 Epic layout, you can reach any of your ships. Other than that, sounds good to me. Like I said earlier, this would open a whole new design space for them.
I don't know how FFG would market this.
Maybe a "Formations" expansion pack? Repaints of Defenders and X-Wings included, plus the cards granting formation abilities? Maybe two different boxes with two repaints each and different formation cards? It would also be a neat product to throw in more upgrade cards and pilots.

I love this whole idea, it's an interesting but easy way to implement fixes for ships that need them without being an 'auto include' title.
It'd also allow for good variety amongst the ships needing the fix too, rather than taking up a modification slot (like munitions failsafe) or a title slot as it applies to the entire list each ship could use their slots to the fullest extent.
Finally I love the Defender idea in the OP, definitely a simple but elegant fix that stops the feel of the ships being over costed, however you'd have to be careful with VI stacking -PS 12 Rexlar would be insanely powerful, so perhaps adding something like 'Veteran Instincts cannot be equipped to the Elite Skill slot if the new Pilot Skill is 9 or over'?
As a Warmachine/Hordes player, I really would love to see something like a tier list.
Have to come up with a Mandalorian tier list for Scum & Villainy.
Great idea WW.
Rogue Squadron Squadron Pack
with Wraith Squadron, Twin Suns, Dozen and Two Avenger squadron bonus cards, etc.
181st Fighter Wing Squadron
you get the gist.

I'm still tweaking the layout (difficult compromises have to be reached to get something that looks decent & legible but can also be formatted to fit on Avery's pre-punched business card stock, which I like to use for card printing).
I saw the title to this thread and thought "Oh no, another GW fanboy trying to GW X-Wing. This is the stupidest idea ever."
Then I read the OP and thought "Actually it could work with X Wing"
Then I read the rest of the thread and thought "You know what? That's actually quite a good idea."
I have nothing to add, I'm not a game designer (nor do I want to be), but I'm impressed! Good work guys & gals.
I'd sooner Magic X-Wing than GW it, but that's not especially relevant here. Suffice it to say, while my avatar may me a 40k character, I'm not so enamored with the game that I can't plainly see its many faults. This, I think, is not one of them.
This would make for an interesting way to get Rogue Squadron into the game.
As well as
Obsidian Squadron (Howl, WG and NB as a must)
Black Squadron (Vader, Mauler, Backstabber as a must)
Scimitar Squadron (Jonus + 2 Scimitar Bombers)
Saber Squadron (Fel and Fel's Wrath - giving Fel's Wrath a new wingman ability if flying alongside with Fel ;-)
Indeed.
Black Squadron ought to have Dark Curse too.
But yes, equally, having a reason to take Howlrunner with 'her' squadron rather than as many academy pilots as you can cram into the list would be nice.
Personally, I might not mandate an exact formation of pilots, but
"Black Squadron" - Five or more pilots from the following list: Darth Vader, Mauler Mithel, Backstabber, Dark Curse, Black Squadron Pilot
"Obsidian Squadron" - Five or more pilots from the following list: Howlrunner, Winged Gundark, Night Beast, Obsidian Squadron Pilot
etc, etc.
I'd quite like to see this. I'm a big fan - especially on the Imperial side - of 'squadron pure' lists.
Heroes of Endor! (Tycho, Horton, and Wedge)
Yessir, I would like a side of theme with my X-Wing burger.

Come to think of it, that wouldn't be a bad way to implement the Firespray upgrade I've been thirsting for: a way to shoot secondary weapons from your rear arc. I'll brainstorm some stuff while I'm at work today.
