Disengaging from engagements idea

By NOPUNintendo64, in Star Wars: Armada

If you have one X-Wing squadron and move it in the midst of three TIE fighter squadrons all of the TIE squadrons are considered engaged and cannot move.

I believe they should've had it so who ever had they most squadrons engaged with each other could have their squadrons disengage.

For example

2 X-Wings and 4 TIE fighters are engaged

One TIE fighter squadron is able to leave because they outnumber the X-Wing squadrons.

Another one can leave because they still outnumber the X-Wings.

But now since each team has the same amount of squads engaged, none of the squadrons can move.

Let's say another X-Wing squadron joins after the 2 TIE squadrons left.

Now none of the TIEs can disengage but one of the X-Wings can.

What do you guys think?

Na.

We have to think ahead. there are abilities coming that are going to allow squadrons to disengage. I think Grit is one coming in Wave 2.

Without the rules of engagement the fighters would dominate. It is all for the best.

simplest is to have your 3 Ties attack the ONE X-wing, and if it takes less then all three, magically the last one isn't engaged anymore

nope.. fine the way it is.

I firmly believe the game designers thought about this, and came up with the right answer in the end

I'd expect a sort of "flight control" officer or support team as well.

Also, we still haven't seen Tycho Celchu's squadron card, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he could disengage from squadrons by himself.

Fair enough. Thanks the responses guys. And you're right they probably already thought about that.

Actually, if you look closely at the Home One expansion card spread, you can see "Wing Coordinator?" in the top row. The same card is in the Imperial-class card spread too. Since we already have a card that reactivates squadrons (Adar Tallon) and one that increases your Squadron value (Expanded Hangars) I doubt either of those would be repeated.

If you look, the Gladiator also has an unrevealed squadron related upgrade card too. I think it's the same Wing Coordinator card.

I think we'll definitely see disengagement linked to ships, as it's probably the most powerful ability that squadrons can get. I wouldn't be surprised if it required you to spend a ship's shooting to do it too.

Would expect to see something akin to "Any engaged squadron activated by your [squadron Dial Symbol] may choose to move only. If so, it may ignore engagement." You can get your more vulnerable ships out of direct harm, but they still won't be doing anything useful that turn.

Remember that fighter combat is abstracted. Although they are not moving in game terms, I think the idea is that they are tied up dog fighting each other so in reality they are moving, but essentially holding their position to screen ships etc.

I think something else to keep in mind is that when a squadron is reduced to 0, it means that squadron is no longer functional... it doesn't necessarily mean it is completely wiped out. It could mean that individual ships are limping back to the hangar, or have chosen to disengaged. The abstracted nature of it allows a lot of room for interpretation.

That being said, I am curious as to what the Home One and the ISD offer for additional Squadron options. :)
