Shadow of Nerekhall - Tile Hazard?

By Cejel, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello everyone. I just purchased Shadow of Nerekhall. It comes with some 2x2 hallway connector tiles, the ones that allow a transition from an A sided tile to a B sided tile. Those tiles have a yellowish green ellipse on them as wide as the hallway. Some other room tiles have the same ellipse. It kinda looks like a "mystical door", but I didn't see any description of it.

Is this an obstacle or a hazard? Or is it just artwork that does not affect gameplay?

The yellow outlined spaces are hazard spaces, and are exactly identical to lava in every way but artwork color.

The ellipses don't have any defined game effect outside of quest rules. However, some quests WILL make use of these ellipses for special quest rules.

Zaltyre, thanks for the quick response. Sorry but I didn't see any reference in the Quest Guide for those ellipses. Could you please provide some details as to which quests will make use of the ellipses or any special quest rules concerning them?

I'll look at my quest guide when I get home. I'm pretty sure at one point they are used as some sort of door, though I may be remembering incorrectly- I used them as a door in a custom quest .

Cejel, I believe those are just art work that does not affect game play, unless I'm badly misinterpreting the situation.

They are really just aesthetic (though like Zaltyre said there may be some quests that reference them).

Basically, the B-side of the Nerekhall tiles represent the Black Realm, and so anything that transitions from Nerekhall to the Black Realm does so through those gates. I think there are some for "outside" (original A tiles) going through gates to transition there. I'm not sure if there are any "cave/building" B sides that go through gates to Nerekhall B sides, though, but if you were to directly put a Nerekhall B side next to an original B side, I think there would be some discrepency in style.

They are not used for anything but artwork in Shadow of Nerekhall- I was mistaken about quest special rules.

Thanks for the clarifications. It's good to know that I didn't miss anything. (But they look so promising...) I've had moments where I didn't notice something special until my 2nd or 3rd read-through of a quest. With so many unique details in some of the quests, it's difficult to digest it all in just one reading. But that's what makes these quests interesting - unique details make for a good unique story. And isn't that why we play?
