Dealing with big ships without big ships (Regionals Prep)

By Shirako, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I'm planning on attending the North Carolina Regionals in about a month and a half now, and have begun fine tuning my imperials as to what I want to bring. I know I'll see Fat Han, Whisper + Decimator, Double IG, Double Doomshuttle etc. but the list that really scares me is Dash + Han.

Normally I fly Soontir + Turr + Whisper but the abundance of turrets in the meta (at least at my LGS) has been ripping this list apart. So I went back to the drawing board.

Soontir Fel

-Push The Limit

-Autothrusters

Howlrunner

4x Academy Ties

I think this list gives me great late game with Soontir, as he can stay alive at range with AT until he is needed to come clean up. Also the mini-swarm can block out the big ships and force my opponent to choose between thinning out the swarm and long range shots at my power piece.

Thoughts?

99 points for initiative.

Play this one slow and wait for your opponent to commit. Get Jax behind his ships, keep him in range 1, and blast away.

I've used Whisper, Turr and Fel and had no problems with turrets. Autothrusters have worked wonders.

Having said that, I have also been considering the exact same Fel + miniswarm. I'm not sure its necessarily better against turrets, because Whisper's 4 attack w/ FCS tears big ships apart (although you WANT initiative so she can shoot first and get your cloak before the opponent's return fire). But TIE fighters are great at blocking (dat barrel roll!), so despite their measly offense vs turrets, they can set up a good situation vs turrets for Fel to lay on the hurt (provided you don't lose too many ships while taking out the escort). I think either list could work well...

The issue I'm having with Whisper is that people expect the phantom, so all of the Fat Han's I've faced have VI, so they will always be shooting before her; and she uncloaked with the intention to fire so having only 2 agility hurts.

I ran the same list with Soontir, Howl and 4 Academies at my first tournament and being inexperienced, simply did not arc dodge well.

One option would be to add Veteran Instincts to Howlrunner and have a 99 build, which would still gain initiative over builds like Fat Han.

With VI, you would have 2 ships that could fire before Han and allow Howlrunner to move after you saw where Han lands.

4 phantoms. If your opponent doesn't kill one in the first engagement and all 4 get to fire, something is done for lol.

It's pretty funny to take someone's firespray off the board with one volley.

I guess slapping 4 phantoms on the table would be pretty funny, but I would get wrecked by high PS lists any turn I want to shoot...vs. swarms though 4 phantoms could be viable.

I would like to run a 3 Phantom list -

2 x Shadow Sqn, Advanced Sensors, ACD

1 x Sigma Sqn. Advanced Sensors, ACD

Don't know how well it would do though.

Surprisingly well actually. Even with the new rules. Here's my list:

Whisper+VI+FCS+ACD

2x Sigma+FCS+IA+SPA

This leaves you at 99 points. You can put a third IA on Whisper or hope to have initiative.

Use the Intelligence Agents to plan where and if you want to de-cloak each round. FCS will help you get the most out of your attacks round to round. This list hits hard and its important you do a lot of damage quickly as your Sigmas will die. You want Whisper to be able to mop up what is left.
