Wave 2 Tournaments, how is it possible?

By Wildhorn, in Star Wars: Armada

I too live in a commonwealth country, so expect there are laws and customs that will be shared.

One of which is the building owner can restrict the trade hours of a company leasing their place. Probably the biggest concern in a small mall is going to be the security of the whole place and then that of the individual stores that may be closed while one is open. So the fellow complaining his store may not be able to open certain hours may be facing a problem that is not of his stores making. Perhaps the rent here is cheap, or it is accross the road from a school and does better wekday trading than weekend trading.

Perhaps a better idea would be to look around at various bars and clubs and see if they would give you a 12 period in a room once a month for games. Many years ago we played at the club on an army base, they only required that we buy food and drink at the bar.

From Quebec, and almost all shops have this kind of opening hours because here Saturday evening/night people goes out (cinema, bar, shows, events, etc), so they would not make much money. Sunday evening, most people just relax at home because the day after is Monday.

In Montreal, Gamer's Vault is open from 10am to 10pm on Saturdays.

A twenty person tournament would take a long time even for the LCGs. That would be five rounds with cut to top 8. 8 hours assuming sixty minute rounds. Star Wars LCG standard is actually seventy minutes.

7.5 for Armada is actually shorter and a known quantity in advance for every event outside of worlds and some nationals.

The official Armada rules don't have a cut to a single-elimination tournament. Up to 32 players means only 3 rounds of games. MoV being translated to Tournament Points will determine the winner.

3 games at 2.5 hours each plus some overhead will be around 8 hours ish.

I know that I never said it has a top cut.

Or just follow the Privateer model and play until a single undefeated player. Then most places shouldn't have an issue going that long on a weekend. It'll be those places trying to squeeze in Sunday tournaments that will have issues.

Privateer model?

Besides couldn't playing until only one player is undefeated last a very, very long time?

Some how his solution to tourney times being so long is to extend the time of the tournament and force going to a 2 day format.

Go to a 40K grand tournament once and you will never have any issue with the time it takes to play Armada.

I've played and ran 16hour long WM/H Tournaments. so a 7-11 hour event is refreshing.

between rounds should be 5-10 minutes unless there is a lunch break.

As the TO, its really easy if you separate peoples army rosters after round into number of wins. So end of round 1 there are two piles, the 1-0s and 0-1s, then at the end of the round 2 there are three piles, 2-0, 1-1, 0-2. and so fourth. it makes shuffling sheets and assigning pairings fast. I haven't 100% read the TO packet for Armada to see if it works like this or if their is a margin of victory based pairing system.

You have to remember that Star Wars Armada IS NOT a board game, its a Miniatures Game.

Avg Game Lengths

WM/H - 2hours

40k - 2.5hours

Fantasy - 3hours

FoW - 2.5 - 3hours

Armada - 1.5-2hours in my experience at 300pts.

Privateer Press as in Warmachine/Hordes

WM/H events typically wont go over 6 rounds, now that's an easy 16 hour event. but those typically only happen at conventions. Most store events go about 6-10 hours cap (3-4 rounds). Playing until there is a clear winner is preferred as the game is designed and advertised as "play like you got a pair, winner take all". Armada is designed it seems to be more manageable for a big person event and not require the event to start at 10am and end at 12am.

So once wave 2 hit, it's gonna 2.5 hours games x3, so a total of 7.5 hours and this doesn't include inbetween matches time and preparation time before the first one. Most gaming shop on week-end open at 10am and close at 5pm, so 7 hours. Which means we most likely won't see any organised play in my region.

I don't understand why to raise it to 400 instead to stick with the 300 (which gives 6 hours, so plenty of time for inbetween matches) and also is divisible by 3 for squadrons points.

5pm? That's weird. I'm used to 9:30 - 10:00 pm as a closing time. Been used to the Netrunner Store Championships running 10+ hours.

Where I live shop hours are usually:

Mon-Wes: 9am to 5pm

Tue-Fri: 9am to 9pm

Sat: 10am to 5pm

Sun: Vary. Noon to 5pm, 10am to 5pm or just closed all day.

Your shop owner doesnt know how to run a hobby store very well. his business hours are terrible, its like he doesnt want to make money

It's not the "Privateer model" it is a Swiss style tournament. That is all. Fairly standard amongst card games as well.

I don't have issue with the game length. I have issue that game length doesnt fit shop operating time for a tournament.

It is inside a shopping center that set the operating time.

Wave 2 will feature the Imperial Class Star Destroyer and the Mon Calamari Frigate. I guessing that along with their introduction we will see a jump in ship cost, as well as a jump in cost to equip these ships. So for those players who choose to fly the new larger ships, 400 points will offset the new cost increase and will not increase the quantity of ships in their fleet. Now, if you do not field the new behemoths, the yes your fleet size will increase so the potential for a long game does exist. But who is really thinking about flying 10 Corvettes?

And now, we darken your skies! Like murder of crows!

10 Corvettes sound like a plan :)
