Wave 2 Tournaments, how is it possible?

By Wildhorn, in Star Wars: Armada

So once wave 2 hit, it's gonna 2.5 hours games x3, so a total of 7.5 hours and this doesn't include inbetween matches time and preparation time before the first one. Most gaming shop on week-end open at 10am and close at 5pm, so 7 hours. Which means we most likely won't see any organised play in my region.

I don't understand why to raise it to 400 instead to stick with the 300 (which gives 6 hours, so plenty of time for inbetween matches) and also is divisible by 3 for squadrons points.

Not every match will be going to time even with 400 points per side. I like that we always know what to expect for rounds and time with Armada. Some other games it varies based on who can show up any particular day.

As long as players know to expect its fine that you have whatever you want.

Any store that is used to running 40k or Warhammer Fantasy shouldnt have issues with the game time for armada. My old FLGS would do 12 - 8 for weekend tournies without much in the way of issues. Armada might be cutting it a bit close though

5pm? That's weird. I'm used to 9:30 - 10:00 pm as a closing time. Been used to the Netrunner Store Championships running 10+ hours.

Where I live shop hours are usually:

Mon-Wes: 9am to 5pm

Tue-Fri: 9am to 9pm

Sat: 10am to 5pm

Sun: Vary. Noon to 5pm, 10am to 5pm or just closed all day.

Strange. Everyone around here is open later on weekends.

Stores here are open until 10 or 11 on Friday and Saturday.

Or just follow the Privateer model and play until a single undefeated player. Then most places shouldn't have an issue going that long on a weekend. It'll be those places trying to squeeze in Sunday tournaments that will have issues.

I dont see how games are going to last 2.5 hours. . . Games are still 6 rounds and even with the increase in ships rounds will only increase by a bit. I dont know about anyone else but once one gets used to the rules turns run pretty smoothly/

I don't know but as per tournament rules, 400 points game will be 150 minutes (2.5 hours). Yeah it might be shorter, but it also can end with timer. If there is 10 games going on, I bet there is at least one that will end on timer.

A twenty person tournament would take a long time even for the LCGs. That would be five rounds with cut to top 8. 8 hours assuming sixty minute rounds. Star Wars LCG standard is actually seventy minutes.

7.5 for Armada is actually shorter and a known quantity in advance for every event outside of worlds and some nationals.

As others have said, these game lengths aren't a big deal to veterans of other miniatures games. The tournaments will be long but work just fine.

All the main local stores are noon to midnight fri & sat. I guess it depends on your area and the clientele/games supported. They are used to running 40k and other major games and their associated tourneys.

Makes me wonder where the original poster is from. Seems crazy to have a game store close so early on the money making days

Yeah, Armada operates closer to the scale of traditional miniature wargames, unlike X-Wing. The game length and tournaments especially won't be for everyone, which is unfortunate, but a reality of the game. On the other hand, it plays very smoothly for the scale involved; I expect 2.5 hours will be way more than enough time even at 400 points.

From Quebec, and almost all shops have this kind of opening hours because here Saturday evening/night people goes out (cinema, bar, shows, events, etc), so they would not make much money. Sunday evening, most people just relax at home because the day after is Monday.

But!! Most gamers want to go out and game. Going to the cinema, bar, show or event is something I do when I am unable to play games.

There is also that most tournament store are located inside a shopping center, so they have to follow the operating hours of these I guess (won't leave all the lights on just for 1 shop).

We have been playing miniature games tournaments of 3-6 2.5 hour rounds, or longer, for at least the last 30 years. I am sure we will manage. This isn't magic, its a miniatures game.

As a fairly new miniatures gamer, I'm looking forward to long, epic games. Stores around me don't close until 9-10 on weekdays and usually 11 on weekends.

Where is everyone getting this 400pt total from? Also most if not all the game stores around my area are open till midnight, every day but Sunday. And to be fair a full day event is not all that strange for a minis tournament. (Or for Magic whoever brought that one up. Many larger tournaments are 8 rounds at 50 minutes each. ;) )

The tournament guide that FFG uploaded has points and time limites for core sets only (180 points), Post Wave 1 release (300 points) and Post Wave 2 release (400 points) under a section called "The future of Armada".

edit: page 3, bottom right hand corner

The Star Wars: Armada tournament format will expand as
the game itself grows and expands. At launch, the official
fleet size is 180 points. When Wave 1 is released, the
official fleet size will increase to 300 points, the round time
will increase to 120 minutes, and the Margin of Victory
table will be updated.
When Wave 2 is released, the official fleet size will
increase to 400 points, the round time will increase to 150
minutes, and the Margin of Victory table will be updated.
This is the culmination of the Armada tournament format,
and will remain the standard from that point on

If you build it, they will come.

Saturday evenings are Saturday evenings in most places, and game stores still make money. Monday (unfortunately) follows Sunday everywhere (yes, even outside of Quebec).

Sounds to me like you've got more of a problem with game store owners/employees who'd rather not be working during those times, than the length of the game itself.
