What Changes have you Made in the Galaxy and to the Canon? What if...

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Did you change anything big in your version of the Galaxy and your interpretation of the SW canon?

If so, are they "minor" changes or have you made an all out "what if" universe like you see in superhero stories?

What if the Deathstar was never destroyed, the OT protagonists are dead and the Rebels are loosing?

What if Luke(and Leia?) turned to the Dark Side?

What if the force isn`t real, just like the Empire says?

What if... Can you come up with any more what ifs?

Separatists won the Clone Wars.

Their droid army has experienced some upgrades. No longer inept, no longer have to speak to communicate.

Jedi are NEARLY extinct after Order 66.

Anakin did not stop Mace Windu from killing Palpatine.

And more changes that I am not solid on. I've already said more than my players know. :3

Unbeknownst to me, I ran a Legacy game set where the Empire and New Republic were at war after Endor. It wasn't Legacy, though, because not only did I not know what that was at the time, I also made up a heck of a lot of stuff (colonies on Endor, Republic and Empire fighting over Tatooine, frickin' Gungan planet, etc.).

What if the galaxy was invaded during the Rebellion Period? (Yuuzhang Vong not required; custom species work just as well)

What if Luke fell to the Dark Side?

What if a plague ravaged the galaxy (space zombies, anyone?)?

What if there was a third contender in the war? (hates the Rebellion and Empire, who both hate them)

The Hutts and/or Black Sun?

Most of my changes would have been obvious in the Prequel/Clone Wars times, but the effects they have in the current time are pretty subtle.

1) The Jedi were a religious order, and it's members were not "Jedi by profession" instead being politicians, generals, doctors, etc. that had Force sensitivity and believed in the Jedi way. They didn't all hang out together or dress alike.

2) Jedi generals were generals that happened to be Jedi. Not every member of the Jedi Order was made into a general.

3) Clones were made of several great soldiers, not merely Jango Fett, and this included some of the Jedi that were part of the military.

4) Clones of Force-sensitive individuals tended to go insane and to cause the original to have the same issue through some unexpected Force connection.

5) The crazy-ass Jedi generals and their clones were largely responsible for the Clone Wars. Dooku was something of a hero, but he was on the losing side so history remembers him quite differently.

6) More, but no one probably wants to hear it.

I do! And it would be cool to hear why you made the changes and what your players think of it.

One of my reasons was to help explain how the Jedi can be completely forgotten in < 20 years. As a massive public organization with obvious members and showy uses of Force abilities I found that dubious. OTOH, if the Order is a religious group (like Scientologists) that stays relatively low-key with undisclosed membership, it makes it easier to forget them after you purge the Tom Cruises and John Travoltas.

I say to my players that the Galaxy is huge and most people probably hadn`t seen a jedi to begin with and they now just think they were powerhungry maniacs with glowing vibroswords or something.

Some might remember them and believe in them, but do not dare to say so. Intense propoganda can accomplish a lot! And the Emperor and Sith of the empire might use tho force to suppress the collective memory.

I also make comparisons to Soviet Russia and how the government convinced the communist population that religion was fake and that science was the only real explanation for everything.

Many may have believed them, many may have not, but officially they did and wouldn`t say otherwise.

I put mineral deposits on Tattooine, so there was a reason to go there other than seeing Jabba the Hutt.

The number of Jedi given in the Novelization of AOTC (i think?) is 10,000 at that point in time. A fair number but nowhere near enough to for the majority of citizens to have seen one. If anything most people probably thought it was another government agency...

By the look of the prequels, the Republic made the existence of the Jedi very widely known. Anakin, a slave boy on a craptastic world under Hutt control recognized a Jedi that was trying to lay low, and Watto had no problem recognizing QGJ either.

A Lucas generated plot hole... as I like to call it...

Edit: Back to the topic at hand. I've haven't made any major changes but I have been developing a campaign series concerning the Death of Alderaan, it's leader/ruler, Bail Organa, and the consequences of his and Alderaan's death.

What if Padme had accepted Anakin's offer, to rule the Galaxy together, on Mustafar?

Of course there will be places with people who know about or at least have heard about jedi, even if most people haven`t really seen one. Mos Eisley is a special place, full of travelers and stories.

And jedi were never a big part of most peoples day to day lives, even those who had seen or even met a few. So it`s not that inconceivable that the jedi are mostly forgotten or at least remembered as something else than they were, at least with hard propaganda and a new order.

In our current campaign not any significant ones.

In older campaigns

What if Luke fell to the Dark Side at Bespin? (Vader and Luke Kill Palpatine, Alliance gets crushed at Endor civil war starts between Palpatine loyalists, and those loyal to Luke and Vader. Garm bel Iblis forms a new rebellion.)

What if who and where Luke and Leia were raised was switched? (Tarkin completely bought the lie about Dantooine leading to Dantooine being destroyed while the Death Star destroyed while coming back to Alderaan rather then after destroying the planet. Palpatine never disbanded the senate which greatly sped the Republic's reformation post Endor though the Alliance took heavier causalities in the battle including Home One)

What if the droids never reached Luke? (This was only a few sessions where a party got warped to the above alternate timeline from one much closer to canon. The Alliance had been crushed and the party spent most f the time there helping found a new rebellion.)

What if Revan was never captured? (Last we saw Coruscant had fallen to the Sith and the Republic was regrouping with Corellia as its new capital.)

And that's not counting the Rise of the Empire one where we basically threw the events of the PT out the window and everything except for a few planet names, character names and ship classes was different.
