I have a player in my local group who is colour blind and can only see grays and he's found it difficult to play armada because of this. he enjoys X-wing and can play that fairly easily because the symbols on the attack and defense dice are so different. But the difference on the dice in Armada are less pronounced and it's also impossible for him to tell on the data cards what dice to roll in the first place. has anyone come up with anything to help players in this situation? For the dice I suppose different sizes could help but the data cards have me baffled
Support for colour blind players
Well black dice have a hit and crit symbols on a single face, red have double hits on a single face, and blue have no blanks. It may take Getting used to but his opponent can always assist
I am slightly color blind, and I cannot see difference between "red" and "green" maneuvers on the dials (too small for me to get the difference). Bigger size should help who has this problem. It works for me at least.
best I can think of is to print out a reference sheet to denote the number/types of dice thrown per ship arc and per squadron
the dice themselves can be distinguished by distinct faces (Double hit on red, hit + crit on black, no blanks on blue)
I winder if photoshoping the cards and changing the shape would help to... you could do a cross for red diamond for blue star for black at least on the data cards and reprint them. as for the dice it's not impossible for him just difficult at a glance
I am green/red colorblind, which seems easy enough. Unfortunately the red is so dark, its very hard to tell it apart from the black on a card or on the dice (especially on he card).
Hard but not impossible, you learn a ton of tricks being colorblind. I look at my dice and line them up before we play. I memorize the battery ordinances in advance. Also the red and black dice are subtly different in tone form each other. Extra lighting helps bring out the difference in tone.
Really this game isn't so bad, you should be in a meeting at work reviewing a spreadsheet thats labeled Green - Yellow - Red.
Providing not all the players are colour blind, the easiest way is for somebody else to give him the dice to use, much easier than the player having to check the symbols. Or why not use the App, as these run in colour order he could select the dice then, once he knows what colour dice to roll that is.
You could get someone to anotate the ship cards "2red/2blue" etc.
As mentioned above - look out for the dual symbol faces or lack of blanks on the dice.
I have a colorblind friend (R/G) and he hates dice games for this reason. I've found that marking the dice and game pieces helps.
As long as it doesn't affect their shape or weight, you can mark your dice however you like and they're still tournament-legal. A 8-sided die is a essentially a diamond-shape, so with a black marker you can dot the top and bottom peaks of one die color (e.g. red), dot the "middle" corners of the other die color (e.g. blue), and leave the last die unmarked (black).
For the ship cards, you could reasonably do the same thing with a pen (e.g. dot the top of red dice, the sides of blue dice, and no mark on black dice). If you're concerned about marking up your cards, put them in a sleeve first and use a fine-tip Sharpie. This will help keep track of which dice you need to roll for your own ships, though you'll need to rely on your opponent to tell you which dice his ships use.
Hope this helps.
Hopefully he doesn't give up the ship because of this. I would think an easy reference guide would help with the ship cards and a slight sharpie mark would help the dice. (Like sharpie the cornerof The blue dice and and put a dot on the empty face of a red dice.
I want to say (not lookin at it) that the squadron activations have symbols on them?
The red and black dice themselves are pretty close but I can distinguish them well enough. The symbols on the cards though... I don't know if it's a matter of printing or size, but they're really hard to tell apart.
