I Don't Understand: The hate over the K-Wing

By Corellian Corvette, in X-Wing

I keep hearing the Aggressor mentioned- you guys mean this?

They mean the IG-2000.

They mean the IG-2000.

****. I keep forgetting about that ship. I was about to say- "That sure isn't a large base ship, guys!"

Whups, lol. Sorry.

Chin turrets exist in a lot of places. I defy you, however, to find me a chin turret that is also a ball turret. Go for it. Knock yourself out. You won't find it.

Well you're sort of right. Sort of.

Isn't that also a laser cannon?

You looked at Russian stuff. That's cheating.

And before someone tells me there's no fixed wing aircraft that has a nose/chin mounted ball turret:

Cameras count now?

There seems to be confusion on the definition on "turret".

There seems to be confusion on the definition on "turret".

Especially what constitutes a 'Ball Turret'.. I'm pretty sure that means a person is manning the inside of the turret; think of the belly turret on a B-17, or the turrets on the side of a LAAT in the prequels. Dude inside = ball turret.

Yeah, those are not ball turrets, those are cameras and sensor systems. A ball turret is a turret that is ball-shaped that houses an individual manning a gun. That's what the K-Wing has.

I'm with Nightshrike here, none of these qualify at all.

The turret on the YAL-1 demonstrator is a pretty big ball turret in the nose. Doesn't have a person in it, but not due to size, our targeting technology is just better than Star Wars.

Yep, it's pretty huge. Also not a chin turret though.

Oh come on, they found examples of what you had originally asked for, I'd say it's darn near close enough!

It's actually not, and the Boeing example is a very good reason why. It's designed to be aerodynamic. Look at its placement. It is a compromise between aerodynamics, the mass of the object, and the goal of being able to shoot someone with a laser beam in multiple directions. The problem with the K-Wing is that there is no functional compromise, which mars the aesthetics.

Also, they didn't find example of what I asked for. I asked for a ball turret that was chin-mounted. A ball turret is not the same thing as a ball-shaped sensor mount.

Definition of BALL TURRET
: a usually retractable gun turret used on large combat aircraft and capable of being rotated so that a gunner may obtain a full circle of fire

Hmm, doesn't say anything about being able to fit a gunner inside of it, but I understand that for the sake that the K-wing had someone inside of it, you wanted to see on with a manned ball turret.

I don't know where you're getting your info from, but the first definition you get from typing ball turret into google is this:

  1. A ball turret was a particular form of spherical-form, altazimuth mount gun turret , fitted to some American-built aircraft during World War 2. The ball turret's spherical shell accommodated the gunner together with his guns and sights; ammunition was fed in from the outside.

If you look at the Wiki article, you can see the PB4Y Privateer, with a nose-mounted ball turret. Note that it isn't chin-mounted. Again, it is aerodynamic, and also functional in terms of its field of fire.

Does this count?

I think that more just proves my point. There's no reason to stick a ball turret where the K-Wing has one. It's ugly, it's not particularly functional, and it's weirdly balanced.

True, the K-wings ball turret is painful.

The K-wing itself in drawings is painful.

But, the K-wing in miniature form looks better than the A-wing to me.

Heck, I never liked the B-wing till I got the model.

Rebel ships are weird.
