They made the TIE Interdictor/Punisher, but not the Assault Gunboat!?!?!

By Gunner070, in X-Wing

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the TIE Interdictor and I see the theme they are going with in this wave for the Imps and Rebels (Heavy Bombers), but I am very disappointed we still don't have the Assault Gunboat (Mostly for the X-Wing campaign I'm making, but also for the game proper).

Thoughts?

Well, that's because the Assault Gunboat isn't a Missile Boat.

Now that you mention it, the Missile Boat would have been perfect for this wave over the "TIE Juiced".

Oh believe me, I know. Could have had the SLAM too. But noooooooooo.

I'm sure it'll all work out somehow. They could be working on it and making sure this wave works right before unleashing it. Hard to be super excited for a ship who's main weaponry is ordnance, when ordnance is broken, I have to admit. Even without it the TIE Cereza will do fine.

Yeah, I would have been so excited to use SLAM. I wrote up rules for it in my campaign but decided to drop the Missile Boat. The Imps already had too many ships and I would have been forced to buy customs like I did with the Gunboat. If I remember right, it was:

ACTION: Boost using the 4-striaght or 3-bank templates. For the rest of the round, reduce your Attack rating to 0. (This would have forced any attack by it to only be at close range with only 1 die)

Edit: Forgot that it added 1 Stress token, too.

Assault Gunboat's not a Super Bomber. The Missile Boat could outzoom TIE defenders so also didn't fit the lumbering superbomber thing they've got going for this Wave.

Plus Alex Davy wants to get Tractor Beam to work, hasn't suceeded yet, and we wouldn't want the Missile Boat without that, would we?

A strong point, though I think the superbomer / speedybomber contrast would have been interesting and very in-tune with what The Rebels do.

No! No more SLAM!

I can't take it!

(why do people think the missile boat looks better than the Pun? I don't see it.)

1: because some of us are thinking of the visually tolerable one.

2:It's comparatively iconic and beloved.

I guess I don't see it. I don't really like either of the options, but to me I think they made the right choice.

Then again, I don't see anything wrong with the K-wing, so yeah.

The missile boat would be an epic only ship

That is something that solos fleets, not something for this scale

Oh imperial R&D, I love your mantra of throwing money at a problem until it is solved

.missile_boat.gif

Yep, that is a fairly unattractive ship.

Would probably be better with a higher polygon count though.

I always thought it was cool.

That said I also love the HWK so take that as you will.

I always wanted them cuz I have a soft spot for anything in the X-Wing fighter sim games. lol

Try staring at this then:

Thing is, the Assault Gunboat, Missile Boat, and TIE Avenger are all popular, powerful, and suitable ships for X-Wing yet for seven waves now we haven't had them. The only TIE Fighter contribution has been the Defender, while Galaxies now has three ships present in the game.

Frankly, honestly, and bluntly I don't like FFG wasting time on scum and reducing the Empire and Rebel factions to the dregs. I like the K-Wing, but many don't, and I certainly don't appreciate the Interdictor taking up our one expansion slot for this wave. I understand that FFG needed to improve ordnance and give Scum more ships but I personally don't care... I do not miss ordnance and I would rather have my XG-1s over dumpy ships that might make ordnance work again.

Because of this, I'm gonna go drive Star Destroyers for a while until Episode 7 gets into X-Wing (The T-70s are awesome) or the cosmic dice finally have FFG deliver one of the better designs.

FFG has to flesh out the new faction. That's fine. the last two have had five waves and a core set. You can deal with a couple ships per wave for a little while.

Also, as much as I love that guy's work, I just do not dig the swoopy-ness. Never felt Imperial to me, even in this combined iteration.

The gunboat is a fan favorite - but it looks like a mini-van

The Punisher not only looks fantastic (if derivative) but has real Imperial flavour to it - so that's my guess as to why they gave a pass to the baby space-bus

I must say I was surprised though - I'm no fan of the XG1, but I'm very much in the minority - seeing at it's a firm fan favourite and an ordnance platform (which we have been promised a fix for) I would have given pretty short odds on that being in this wave.

Its what, half a year or so between wave releases? So with nothing interesting me much last wave and this wave not at all, that's a long time to have little interest in the *new* with X-Wing.

If wave 8 is also disappointing it'll be longer.

I'm even wondering if it's worth grabbing the Raider at this point. I could do that, or I could use that funding to grab more Armada ships. It's not like the Raider is going to go anywhere either.

Of course it does, because it's literally nothing more than a copy+paste job of an existing Imperial Fighter. What aggravates me the most about the Interdictor is just how lazy the design is. Even the Oppressor was the result of setting out to design it. Interdictor is nothing more than gluing more ordnance pods to the Bomber to make it more powerful. All for a throw-away upgrade mechanic.

I really don't understand them putting this TIE Bomber variant in. It's not even "real". It was nothing more than a game mechanic from that old star wars RTS game to show you had upgraded your vehicles to a certain level. That it is. If game mechanics is a real thing now are they going to re-edit Empire Strikes Back to have Yoda tell Luke "to use the force press the B button rapidly". It's just plain stupid and lazy of FFG to make this thing. Missile Boat or Gunboat would of been perfect to go with the K-Wing. But then that would of actually cost some money to make a new model and not just slap more pods on a TIE Bomber and call it new.

Whats next FFG ? Make a ship based on a lego star wars kit and the pilot can put it back together midflight when it takes damage, cause thats where your headed with this TIE Interdictor BS. They keep this up then Disney should pull the license.

I'm not sure FFG saved any money by going with the TIE Punisher, since it clearly required a new 3D model and a new mold. And I have no idea what LEGO has to do with anything. And I'm pretty sure Disney isn't going to pull the license because the licensee made a decision with which you disagree.

Oh, and it's "would have", not "would of."

[Late EDIT: fixed a typo.]

what are the great big ordnance pods for then?
