How to Carry Your Miniatures?

By Mammoth5330, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello All,

I'm new to the game and miniatures in general. I have a question on how to safely transport X-Wing miniatures when traveling for play. What do people use to carry them? I'm lucky to live a mile from the FF Games Center, so I hope to play in some organized play soon.

Thanks in advance.

Find what works for you and the fleet you have purchased. The core box can work or look at boxes from Plano, Stanley, Husky, Flambeau, and ArtBin. There are also boxes with custom foam made by KR MultiCase, Feldherr, GamesPlus, BattleFoam and others.

The plastic vacuum formed holders that the ships come packaged in are the best way to store the ships. Then you put those into boxes.

Foam and tackleboxes just cost additional money and don't protect your ships as well. All 14 of my Z 95's and all 4 of my X Wings have all of their antennae intact. Everything else in my collection is pristine except for the one TIE Fighter I dropped when moving to another table at a store championship.

Tackleboxes are great for storing the tokens and range rulers and such though.

I use KR Multicases and they do a brilliant job of protecting the models. My only warning is to make sure you're careful when putting the ships in (and more importantly out) of the trays (protruding parts like Z95 canons can snag in the foam). The boxes have passed the drop test on a number of occasions...

The only major drawback is cost-they are going to cost more than plano cases etc...

I use a Camera Case which came with Pluck Foam and Dividers, which I used both to create enough storage for 3 Small Ships, 1 Large Ship, and a few B-Wings as well as all the dials, dice, and other stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm glad to see such a supportive and active community for the game. I'm sure Ill have plenty more questions.

Battle foam. Do it.

Just don't waste your money. Just get a tackle box, like Plano, and save a lot of money.

I went to Menards and found the red Plano tool box that folks have used in videos in YouTube for 9$. The top clear section holds all the tokens and range rulers and maneuver rulers. Inside the red compartment I can fit my ships, pilot cards and dials, bases, upgrade cars and damage cards.

I fit 2 large base ships in the red part also. Seems a perfect fit for a starting fleet.

tackle box Plano and the original plastic shells.

Allow me to suggest DarkPadawan and SirWillibald's MicroHangars . I'm using them for the stuff that's overflowing from my main bag, and they work a treat. Sturdy enough to prevent the ship being damaged in normal transportation* and extremely space efficient. I'm currently carrying the models for two IG-2000s, two Y-wings, a Scyk, a Starviper, two E-wings, two Z-95s and an A-wing around inside one of the tourney-prize boxes.

* Provided you get them printed on at least 200gsm cardstock. 300gsm is better, though.

Plano tackle box has been the best for me. Battle Foam tends to "grab" the small bits on the ships (laser canons and the such).

Or spend less than that on a Plano box that will carry all of your ships in safety...even on the pegs! Battlefoam is just too expensive for what you get. If these were models that you glue together and hand paint, I can see you might want Battlefoam. Not X-wing, though.

I found a good box at Harbor Freight for $14. It has 4 pull-out parts organizers that work well for small ships, dials, and tokens and the top has enough room for about 4 Large ships like a Shuttle, YT-1300, YT-2400, or Decimator. I found enough foam in packages at work to cut it myself and put it in the top and compartments or each parts drawer. Small bases in pegs fit in the parts drawers and the Large bases go in the top along with my dice, and templates. The width at the top is just wide enough to fit the range template straight across. It was less expensive than the tackle boxes and craft boxes I looked at.

As an example - one of the 4 pull-out organizers has my small Empire ships in it: 5 Ties, 1 Tie Advanced, 3 Interceptors, 1 Phantom, 1 Bomber, 1 Defender and I could likely get 4-6 more ships in there. 18 compartments in each. I put my notebooks with pilot and upgrade cards in a backpack and it's pretty easy to carry.

I put magnets on the bottom of my bases and then keep them in Star Wars lunch tins.
Looks cool and they don't slide around unless I drop the case.

These are older pics. I currently use this Yoda box for my Rebels and have a larger Empire Strikes Back with Vadar on the lid for my Imperial.

I can fit one large ship (3 magnets) in there too. Falcon sits level like the other ships, but the Firespray, Lamba, and B-Wings all attach to the wall of the tin instead.
