Question about conversion kit and monster collection

By leewroy, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi!

I just bought descent 2nd edition (still waiting for arrival). I'd like to buy the conversion kit for the first edtion, wich I have almost everything related, but one question cames to mind...

If all the adventures in the core game and the expansions are pre made, and have monsters from the second edition, what's the point in have the monsters for the old game?

Unless you're planning to make your own quests or use the vault. Same goes for the monster collections, that are nothing more than the old heroes/monsters in a new sculpture, for all I see.

I wonder if there is some mechanic in the game that allows the overlord to put these old beasts in play, somehow. Could someone explain this to me?

Thanks in advance!

Mosts quests feature 'open' groups in the quest setup. For that open group, you can select any monster from any expansion where one of the trait symbols on its card match one of the symbols at the top of the quest page.

Only real limit is that I believe monsters from the monster pack override the version of the conversion kit.

Hmm... I see. So there's a point. And yeah, the monster collection is more useful for those who don't own the first edition and the conversion kit. Altough it came with two quests (for what I heard) isn't really necessary.

Thanks for your reply dude.

Yes, each pack comes with 1 rumor quest and one advanced quest (the followup of that rumor) which can be included with any campaign. I do believe some monsterpack heroes/monsters had some of their abilities/values changed compared to the conversion kit.

The Conversion Kit will provide you far more diversity to the game ... especially over the base game, and even in addition to all of the expansions. The diversity comes from being able to use D1e monsters and heroes in the D2e world.

Having said that, you should also be aware that since it was released, FFG has begun to release Hero & Monster Collection expansions which involve re-released heroes and monsters from D1e. In general, now that they have had time to see the game playtested, the H&M collections involve tweaking to Heroes and Monsters that attempt to better balance them.

Some like the changes, some don't. I just went ahead and collected everything, as I did with D1e. I just like stuff and options. :D

Not to mention that in the long run, it will make the collection more valuable.

Sure. I'´m planning to buy everything, except, maybe, the hero and monster collections and the lieutenant expansions. I just missed in the first edition the road to legend, the sea of blood and the lieutenants.

When I was in the mood to buy'em, the second edition cames.

This game is really something else. I spent most of my childhood imagining something a little like that :D

Thnaks for replying guys.

Like already said, most (nearly all) of the quests feature open monstergroups, where you can choose one particular monstergroup out of a specific pool of monstergroups. If you own just the base game you often choose between two or three valid monstergroups, whereas the conversion kit easily doubles or even triples that number.

Long story short imo the CK enables the OL to really form a whole variety of distinct strategy by selecting one of these monstergroups, because more monstergroups for choice often means having access to very different niches of monstergroup-capabilities and this is imo precisly one deciding factor in opening up a lot of different strategies to choose from.

Indeed. Thanks for replying.

By the way, the core game comes with 9 kind of monsters (not counting the masters). Wjat can I get in the expansions? I think it's two or three types each.

Lair of the Wyrm:

Hybrid Sentinels

Fire Imps

Labyrinth of Ruin:

Arachyura

Volucrix Reavers

Goblin Witchers

Carrion Drakes

Trollfens

Harpies

Plague Worms

Nerekhall

Ironbound

Rat swarms

Changelings

Ynfernael Hulks

Manor of Ravens

Wraiths

Bandits

Oath of the Outcast:

Razorwings

Beastmen

Bane spiders

Crown of Destiny:

Giants

Lava Beetles

Chaos Beasts

Crusade of the forgotten:

Sorcerers

Medusa

Golems

Guardians of Deephall:

Dark Priests

Wendigos

Crypt Dragons

Bonds of the Wild and Visions of Dawn are still coming with:

Ogres, Trolls, Kobolds, Deep Elves, Hellhounds, and Manticores.

I see. If I get the conversion kit and all the expansions, I´ll end up with 48 type of monsters then, since the monster's collection are all about the old game, with new sculptures.

I miss two things, for now, in a matter of expansions. They could make a desert expansion, with mummies, scarabs, jackals. And something like the tomb of ice too. This is not new, but the second edition still misses a cold territory :)

Thanks!

There are a few maps that take place in cold areas, and there are suitable tiles for it.

I agree with you about desert though. That environment has not been touched on at all yet.

Fingers crossed for a next expansion then
