[Tempo] Assistant and Descendant

By PRODIGEE, in CoC Rules Discussion

OUr Nationals are coming at a fast path and I wasasked this one :

I resource my descendant.

I use the domain to pay for the Assitant.

I send my descendant (transient) to the discard pile and use the ability of the assistant to send him into play.

I ruled that the descendant was not yet in the discard pile while the response of the Assistant trigger, as the response is faster than the action to pay for the character.

May someone tell me what he thinks about this one (I was unable to find anything like this in the whole forum).

I say you can -

when you drain the domain you pay a cost for a card - transients enters discard pile, you put west on the table, response kicks in.

Just like you resource of one mind, then you drain the domain to play inside out hours (not sure about the card's name - I 'm thinking about that 1 cost neutral, that puts nights/days on the table) then you put of one mind on the table (wicked, I know).

1) In order to have its response trigger, Assistant needs to be put into play from hand; let's say it has been played by paying its cost;

2) Once a domain is drained, as a game effect (and thus faster than the Assistant response), transients attached to that domains are put into the discard pile (manual, page 12).

3) Therefore Descendant, in the case you described, is fully into the discard pile and targettable by Assistant response as it comes into play.

Basically the order is: you drain the domain, Descendant goes to discard pile, Assistant gets into play from your hand, Assistant response trigger. Any disrupt or forced response appliable of course can alter this chain of events.

Don't know why I thought that the response of the assistant was faster than the Action resolution (to put the assistant in play) .... Maybe I always played it as the Asistant + the character reanimated came in play together. That might be the cause.

I'm not totally convinced, but, as you're the fourth guy who said so, you might be right ^^

It's definitely right.

FAQ page 13:

"Responses are played after the resolution
of the action or framework game event
that meets their play requirement, but
before the next player action is taken,
or before the next game event resolves."

In plainer English (I think):

An Action (including playing a card from hand during the Operations Phase) must completely resolve before another Action or Response can be used. Only Disrupts get in the way of resolving an Action - even a Forced Response simply takes away the option to do anything in between one Action/Response resolution and the next Action/Response. And, of course, Responses can be played after an Action/Response prior to the next Action being taken...
