I always thought that cards are discarded in secret, if you are forced to, which makes sense since Cylons can discard precious cards this way. But with Pegasus there are treachery cards triggering when treachery cards are discarded - but how do I know? We currently play that you have to announce if you discard treachery cards, but not which exactly you are discarding. What is the official ruling for that?

The official rule is that skill cards are discarded face up next to their respective decks.

We had always played with discarding being open. If discarding was secret, the person who sorts the skill cards and reshuffles the decks would have more information than the other players, which would be unfair.

That said, the official rules agree, and they are discarded face up next to their respective decks.

We always make a stack of discarded skill cards, and if one deck runs out of cards, we shuffle the discard pile and sort them into their respective decks in the open, so no advantage in knowledge for anyone.

With the small size of the skill cards, my group has always had a discard pile beneath every skill deck.

The way it's always been depicted by FFG is that each skill deck gets it's own discard. In fact, Cory has said that the top card of each discard pile is public knowledge, but you can't go looking through the discard pile. So it's pretty clear how they intend the discard piles to work.

There's also the notice

"This section is only intended for play groups who have trouble agreeing on what should and should not be allowed under the current Secrecy rules."

To me, meaning if you really can't agree on how to maintain secrecy, these are the official rules to fall back to.

My group decided to keep playing as before the FAQ came out, that we discard face-down, but have to announce what color you are discarding. This was mostly to maintain the ability for an unrevealed cylon to be able to discard whatever value cards they wish.

We usually put the discards facedown next to the apropriate deck. Cards off the board are 'live' the pile on the Galctica board is the discard pile
