Two waves, no purchases

By Lord Ashram, in X-Wing

Well, Wave 7 will now be the second wave in a row in which I didn't buy anything.

I have to say... I just have zero interest in these ships.

A) I really don't like the way they look. The Hounds Tooth is interesting, but the rest... not so much. I am amazed that the non-Star Wars movie ships always look so blah to me... some of the worst sci-fi design I've seen.

B) I don't need the cards. I only play for fun, so just proxy what I want.

C) At this point, the variety is solid enough. I don't have an interest in ships that are only mildly different than what has come before.

So... yeah. I don't foresee buying any more X-Wing ships; my collection is perfect as is.

Anyone else in the same boat?

At this point you may prefer to focus on Armada or IA...it sounds like X-wing isn't scratching the itch anymore.

I am. The star Viper I bought was more out of curiosity than anything. Last purchase I made with the full intention of running it was the Decimator. The Punisher has kind of killed my interest in X-Wing, that and Scum dominating the wave, at least for now. I might return if they do Episode 7 ships or finally do some ship I've always wanted to have in the game, like the Assault Gunboat or TIE Avenger.

Baffled they went with something really obscure and niche over one of the more popular fighters...

I wouldn't say it's "baffling": they clearly wanted to have a wave focused on ordnance, and the TIE Bomberoids (because it's like a bomber on steroids!) is something that fits the bill.

I have very little doubt that we'll see the TIE Avenger eventually as some sorta in-between of the Advanced and the Interceptor.

Then again, the Gunboat is marginally more well-known and also could've filled the role of "lots and lots of missiles!". All I can figure is it's because it really doesn't look like most Imperial ships, and visually the Interdictor Punisher looks more like it belongs flying next to other Imperials.

But hey, I'm still holding out for TIE Scouts, too...

I wouldn't say the Gunboat is only marginally better known, X-wing, TIE Fighter, Vs and Alliance were all popular games, and the Gunboat featured heavily in the campaigns in TIE fighter. So it already appeared in 4 times as many games as the Punisher. They must have wanted to stick with something that was clearly a TIE design, to keep in theme with the Empire, but the Gunboat is aesthetically similar to the Lambda, so...

Right, if we're going to have a Lambda Shuttle on the table, I don't see why an Assault Gunboat would be so aesthetically jarring. It does seem like FFG went with the TIE Interdictor/Punisher/Abomination/whatever over the Gunboat because it looks like other TIEs, though, which is a disappointing choice IMO.

I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed with this wave at first glance. In the past, I've said on this forum that it doesn't matter what the ship is — any new expansion should be bought for what it adds to the game mechanically. I won't backpeddle from that. In fact, I'll double down on it — the K-Wing and TIE Punisher better have some great upgrades because I won't be buying them for how they look or out of nostalgia for seeing them in other Star Wars media. Great upgrades and functionality would convince me to buy them, but I'm not inclined to rush out and get them because I love the ships on their own. I would have rather seen other ships try to fill their intended roles, particularly the Assault Gunboat or Missile Boat instead of the TIE Punisher.

The Kihraxz looks pretty good. Even though I've never played Star Wars Galaxies, I wouldn't mind getting that ship, I hate the name, though — it's nigh unspellable, let alone unpronounceable. Furthermore, the lore seems to suggest that the Kihraxz is a very weak ship, which conflicts with what the stats in X-Wing seem to be, while the Vaksai upgrade is stronger offensively. So why isn't FFG calling it the Vaksai? I mean at least that ship can be pronounced and spelled, let alone make more sense in the fluff.

The Hound's Tooth looks the most Star Warsy, and I like that it has a 180-degree arc, which brings something a little different to the game. I don't like that the ship's model is YV-666, though. I'm a little uncomfortable buying something with that number on it. FFG can't do much about that, I know, but it still kinda bothers me. I don't know what I'm going to end up doing once it goes on sale.

I'm not quitting the game or anything hyperbolic, but this is definitely the wave I'm the least enthusiastic about because of several decisions FFG has made.

Nah. I'm not interested in Armada until they get a few more waves. What's the point of spending 100 bucks to pick up a single core set? There isn't enough ships available for it to be interesting. I'll probably get into it towards the end of the year.

I called it at wave 5, and I still come here from time to time to procrastinate :)

I doubt there are many people who called it at Wave 5 still on the forum.

They're chillin' over at Armada.

This wave practically completes my collection

We all said that at Wave 5. And Wave 4. And a few at Wave 3...

That's why I spent 200 bucks, to get TWO core sets. I can do a good game like that, actually!

I find these posts so funny, op is a massive narcassist.

I can imagine the FFG X Wing part of the office has a siren like a terror alert in XCom when someone posts one of these "Oh no we just lost $40 of business".

Bottom line is this, all those people that keep complaining about not wanting to expand the game past endless trench runs (BORING) if they stopped producing ships after what was in IV - VI no one would buy anything, by release skum and more and more strange ships it maybe alienating a small part of the player base but opening this game upto much more than endless trench runs and more into a seriously good miniature game. They have already learned this lesson with IA with the reduced numbers of Canon characters in the game at launch, The best things about games like 40k and fantasy was designing your own force and with more and more obscure, the more that can happen (even just in players heads).

bottom line this game will be what FFG want it to be and some of that decision making will be based on feedback, but they will aim it mainly at people who will buy more and thus people who want to have more interesting games than endless trench runs.

that's code for no one at FFG gives a.......

X wing is so awesome that you can even play and enjoy it with just the first 2 waves. But the ships and the game are so awesome that I want to collect them all, even I dont use all the ships.

Being an addict on a budget I see your point :)

Some waves I buy 3 or all 4 of the new types, or I just buy 1 or 0.

wave 6 definately has my interest. This one, well I am curious about the Khiraxz (hoping I write this correctly).

But the other three...., I might like the cards but that's not a reason for me to buy one.

Will I limit my tournament options? Sure, but even with only a part of the collection you can go far :)

I am hoping for some re-paints in the future, the X wing and TIE Bomber especially ;)

I can't wait until these new ships come out myself. I actually think the K-Wing looks pretty sweet. I don't know much about the ship or why people seem to hate it so much, but the model looks pretty cool from what I saw in the photos. That Houndstooth is really different, in a good way.

The thing that excites me the most is that there are already a lot of unique things going on and we don't even know that much about the new wave. We've got a small ship with a turret AND a new action, that's pretty different already. The Houndstooth has its 180 degree firing arc (I've always liked the Firespray because of it's unique firing arc). That new TIE is built like a tank with 9hp. Who knows what other unique things we'll see with the dials, upgrade cards, and pilots. I think this wave is going to add a lot of fun and a lot of variety to the table.

Whoops!

I just realized, I made a mistake...

This will be THREE waves where I didn't buy anything!

I forgot about the big turret ship wave. Didn't buy any of those either, because frankly I don't like turret ships. I only have the falcon by accident.

So yeah... The fun of being the sole provider of x wing ships for a group makes it that you can customize and avoid some of the overwhelming metas. Huzzah!

They didn't go with the Assault Gunboat because it is not a superbomber.

Oh, go F yourself.

First off, at no point did I ever say "Fantasy Flight shouldn't make these!" They can make whatever they think will make them money, as any company should.

But... you know what? This is an internet forum. Where people discuss the game and all of that jazz. And a person posting, on the heels of a new release, that they haven't found anything of interest for the last three waves, and explaining why, isn't "massive(ly) narcissistic"... it is actually exactly one of the reasons the forum EXISTS.

And if you think that the only thing you can do with X-Wings, Y-Wings, B-Wings, A-Wings, the Falcon, Z-95s, and yes, even the E-Wing and HWK and about two hundred upgrade cards and different pilots is "trench runs"... well, your I'm afraid your understanding of the purpose of internet forums is FAR ahead of your imagination.

But you go ahead and buy yourself a bunch of.... whatever that E-Wing-looking fighter is, or that strange K-Wing, because without it you are stuck doing trench runs. I am going to stick with my huge box of excellent ships and upgrades, all of which look cool and all of which resonate with me because of their connection to my favorite film of all time, and continue to play a really cool game with infinite possibilities.

Jesus, being lectured on an X-Wing forum about not knowing what a real miniatures game is blows my mind.

I just hope the ordnance fix allegedly coming with these bombers is widely and easily applicable to our existing ships, as I'll just be getting the upgrade cards. Best would be a rules card that fundamentally changes how ordnance works (e.g. hit cancels all agility dice results), so I don't have to fork over dosh at what is likely to be inflated ebay cost.

I've bought all Waves and have had fun with all of them. Stop taking yourselves so serious. It's just a game, a fun star wars game. Enjoy it and fly casual.

Agreed completely, except for the all the waves bit. I only play with friends, I proxy whatever I need, I don't buy based on competitiveness... I am the definition of casual:)

That said... when you start getting to the ships that are coming out now, it doesn't feel like a Star Wars game to ME, since I've never seen any of these ships in any Star Wars thing I've seen.

if you spent $200 for 2 core sets your doing it wrong.

Well, I didn't really. You get the idea, though.
