180 points for Core vs 200 points seems kinda funny is all

By coastcityo, in Star Wars: Armada

Don't know if anyone else commented on this, but does it strike anyone lea as kind of funny to use 180 as the basic fleet with the core set vs 200 points? It just seems kind of odd to me for a couple reasons.

First is my OCD need for symmetry, I'm not quite Adrian Monk here, but 200 is such a nice round number. Especially when 300 is the standard fleet size once Wave 1 lands, and then talk of 400 points after Wave 2 left us a chance for a nice 200/300/400/500...progression on fleet sizes.

Secondly, 180 points pretty much limits us to an upgrade or possibly two, and not quite all our fighters. While 200 points gives us all ten fighters (between both sides), and more chances for upgrades.

In all honesty, I think my OCD desires are bigger drivers here than the desire for more upgrade points.

I know nothing says that me and my buddy can't just play 200 if that's what we want, I'm just wondering if anyone else had thought it weird as well. So, anyone feel like giving me some validation here, or am I just being nutty as a fruitcake here?

I believe that is exactly the reason the point limit was set lower: so that you would have to prioritize / decide what your fleet build would consist of. All of the ships, squadrons, and upgrade cards have their own advantages, so part of the strategy of the game is deciding how you will build your fleet when you are limited in what you can bring into battle.

Rather clever actually. When I put together my fleets, I always think that if I just had a few more points to equip another upgrade or have another ship, I would be set, but that would be an endless circle of needing more points for more equips.

My friend and I looked at that and immediately changed to 200 points for our fleets. --On the other hand, we've been freely proxying spoiled Wave 1 cards and squadrons, so list variety at 200 hasn't exactly been an issue, either...: )

I played a 180 game with my friend using my Core Set, and after going round robin on upgrade cards, we both had tapped into all the Upgrade Cards worth using and both still had points to go. I did not choose a Commander though. (Do I have to?)

180 points makes squadrons clean (60 points)

i consider myself OCD too, and being allowed to spend 60 of 180 on fighters is much cleaner to me then being allowed 66.6666 of 200.

I totally understand.

You've got to have a Commander. One of the complaints about the Core, is that Tarkin ain't cheap.

At 200 points you can have 2 Victory-class... versus 2 Nebs and a Corvette. That extra 20 points throws the balance way off when all you have is the core set.

Or, three Rebel ships and some X-wings versus unescorted Vickys. Sure wouldn't want a few fighters and a corvette or two sitting on my tail without TIEs.

Watcha gonna do when it will be 400 points with Wave 2? :)

From p22 Learn to Play: "The fleet cannot spend more than one third of its fleet points on squadrons."

This can have two meanings and needs to have some clarification:

1. If I have a 180 point build limit is the points I have to spend of squadrons 60 points? (Which is simple enough)

2. Do I get one third of the points I have spent? So if I spend only 115 points on ships am I limited to 57.5 points of squadrons? (Which seems to be the way FAB's Fleet Builder works.)

At 400 points that odd point could just end up being a ship, so you have 133 for Squadrons and 267 for ships.

Given that the mission selection is those provided by the second player spending the full number of points may not always be what you want or intend to do.

It seems to me that as you "spend" fleet points on things, you must have a pool of points to draw from. So that pool would be what is refered to by "it's fleet points". So if the limit is 180p you can spend 60 points on squadrons regardles on what (or if) you spend the rest.
