Why Wave 7 Is Fine

By Vorpal Sword, in X-Wing

Theme matters in this game, but FFG have so far been good stewards in that respect. I'm willing to extend them some credit for that, and wait and see how well the K-wing and TIE Interdictor Punisher carry it out.

Design and aesthetics matter in this game, too, but FFG have also been good stewards there. Their modelers have made some ships I thought I wouldn't care for into things I'm happy to have on the table. So I'm willing to extend some credit there, too.

But at the end of the day, new ships are part pre-painted miniature and part rules package. And while I have some issues, small and large, with what they've done in the past, I'm happy the direction the game is going lately and with a couple of their high-profile decisions, and that means there's a good chance I'll like the effect of the new heavy bombers and Scum ships on the metagame.

So even if the TIE Interdictor Punisher wouldn't have been my first choice, and I wish the K-wing didn't have pylons on top of pylons and turrets in two different, equally silly places, I think Wave 7 will be just fine.

Never was a fan of the Hawk or the B-wing, but FFG did a great job on both. The only job I really dislike is the StarViper's paint scheme.

The Intersher wasn't my first choice either, but it is great and brings back SWGBG memories to me.

I wish the K-wing didn't have pylons on top of pylons and turrets in two different, equally silly places

The same place as the TIE cog, funnily enough.

I'm excited about the ordnance. Those are some beefy Rebel and imperial ships which means they did something to make torps and missiles fun and useful.

Team Covenant's updates have some pics from the showroom floor of the actual models.

Sadly, I have to say the TIE:BM and Krap-Wing look just as silly in person as they do from the teaser slides:

here's why Wave 7 is not fine

1 - no cards to ogle and make squadrons for

2 - it's not out yet

You joking?? That Intesher looks boss and so does the K-wing. I think the Hound's Tooth looks the silliest since they squashed it.

K-wing looks like a WW-2 Super Bomber, and the Intesher looks like some sort of strategic Bomber or transport.

No doubt, in a few months folks will be talking about how the K-Wing and Punisher took over the meta.

At least the paint is good.

Can't Wait to try them. I'm in love with K-Wing and Khiraxz Fighter

B-Wing stands for Best.

Oh no doubt. They're going to be powerhouses.

While I am definitely a critic of the aesthetics, seeing the model eases my viewpoint on the Kihraxz at least. The presentation slide made it appear like a strange E-wing variant. The rest still just don't do it for me.

Oddly enough, the only one I'm not thrilled with (though I like it) is the Khiraxz. It looks a lot klunkier than other art I had seen of it. The more I look at the K-Wing, the more I like it and I hope they've got a good ordnance fix so I can load that beast up and bring some pain.

FFG's models have a magical property. I went from wanting 1 to wanting 3 HWKs. No regrets.

I think they did the ships Z-95 level justice given the source material. Those look soooo much better than the blurry renders, and the K-wing actually looks reasonably Koensayr.

The K-wing is ugly, but there really not a lot of options left for the rebels, and this one happens to occupy a unique niche and fits the ordnance theme they were going for.

The Tie Punisher is definitely an odd choice, but it fits their theme, and from a gameplay standpoint, it is probably better than the scimitar, which occupies the same design space as the tie bomber.

But priced appropriately. But competitive ordnance'll certainly be interesting.

I think I'll only be buying the Hounds Tooth and the Kuhxzzzsswuthowdoispellthisthing. They look ok. Will be skipping the K-Wing and TIE Punisher. They look a bit pants.

I don't play competitively so I'm not too fussed about any killer upgrade cards they decide to put in to ship enough units to justify the existence of this wave.

It very much feels like FFG is scraping the bottom of the EU barrel. This seems like a filler wave until they're allowed to announce their new toys from Episode 7/The Force Awakens.

Roll on wave 8.

Don't like 'em? Fine. Doesn't give you any reason to be a such a rude prick about it.

They needed some way to fix ordnance.

I was talking to a fellow x-wing player about wave 7. We both understood that an ordnance fix was coming. We also understood that with the Raider release soon, Epic play could become an actual thing. Knowing both of those two points, we started to accept that all 3 factions would probably get another bomber. So for rebels, it really kinda *HAD* to be the K-wing. There isn't much else out there to choose from. Maybe they even tried to design their own and it came out looking too much like either the B or Y wing. Now that I see the K-wing miniature, it doesn't look too bad. Will I buy 4 and build a list around them? probably not. But I might get 2 at most. Same with the TIE. The Scum ship, Khxasiraxhirxam or whatever its called, actually looks kinda neat. The Hound's Tooth might be the worst looking of the bunch. It looks like a Jawa Sandcrawler with a starship stuck up it's a$$.

*raises a glass*

here's to wave 7....may you help us bring down Huge ships and not look too pretty doing it.

So, TIE Star Cruiser next?

The Interdictor is 4 TIE Bombers strapped together and the K-wing has nine engines.

I read this in the voice of a crotchety old wishbone driver dismissing these new fangled "heavy assault starfighters" and latest Koensayr models. Back in his day they had to make due with Y-wings and they liked it.
