FFG jumps the shark?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

The XG-1 is not a superbomber.

Remember guys that the Interdictor and K-wing aren't the "the ships FFG wanted to make the most," they're "the ships FFG wanted to make the most that fulfilled the role they wanted for this

That's the thing; they can mold the mechanics to fit any model. There is absolutely nothing unique about that Tie Punisher model that couldn't be accomplished with half a dozen other models.

Would you rather get an XG-1 that is not true to the XG-1 than possibly get an XG-1 that properly represents the Assault Gunboat further down the line?

Skipray Blastboat, Missile Boat, Scimitar Assault Bomber, Assault Gunboat, any of those could have filled the slot of an ordnance platform.

Large ship, fast ship, abomination that serves an identical role to the TIE bomber, Y-wing.

It's not just an ordnance carrier, it's an ordnance carrier that behaves in a specific desired way. I find it hard to believe these ships weren't considered. FFG decided to go with the TIE interdictor, and they'll have their reasons.

what in the hell does the "Punisher" provide that isn't just an up-sized version of that?

We'll find out when the article goes up.

If they go up Mon. It was a few weeks after GAMA that the Armada wave 2 Articles went up.

But the IA ones went up immediately. Given the little teacup storm this has made I think it, from an outsider's perspective, would be an unsound move not to put the article up fairly swiftly.

interesting

I think I said this back when the scum hit the fan, and I will probably say it again when the next wave hits. Even if you absolutely hate a new design, someone loves it. But the flip side of that is, it is OK not to like things. My various disorders may compel me to get the K-Wing, but it is an ugly, ugly ship and a poor choice over releasing an new aces pack (Y Wing and Bomber repaints!) or an ARC 170, but hey, it is what it is. And I know even though the Punished to me just looks like a bigger T-Bomber which ain't so bad but I know people hate as much it as I hate the K, so it is what it is.

Next wave they may make ships you hate, so let some folks vent.

Say what you will, but I doubt anyone here could argue that the Gunboat would sell more models than the Punisher based solely on its fluff, recongization, and nostalgic value.

And at the end of the day it's about selling plastic.

(Apologies for butchered quotes; on the phone)

At this point, I think it is safe to say it will sell because it's an X-wing game miniature.

True story. But the Gunboat would have sold more.

Again, models do not dictate mechanics. If that were the case then the Defender would have been the Interceptor on steroids. The Punisher has extra pods for increased ordnance, as does the Missile Boat & Gunboat.

Yes and no. The Defender actually went through a couple of iterations, and FFG chose the one that suited what they wanted from the ship. In TIE Fighter it was a super interceptor, but Empire at War and some other sources have depicted it as a fast assault fighter, which is the direction FFG took. It's just that they were too conservative with the poor thing.

Valid point, however it also shows that FFG can pretty much mold the mechanics of any model to fit their current needs.

Don't blame FFG. They didn't create the Star Wars EU. It's not their fault that the EU is full of ugly ship designs.

I really hope that in addition to updated versions of the classic ships, the new Star Wars movies will include a bunch of cool new ships created by talented designers. Because if they don't FFG is going to be scraping the bottom of the EU barrel for new ships pretty soon.

For me the shark got jumped when the first TIE Mary Sues were released in Wave 4 (Defender and Phantom). Still I own 2 of both and can't sleep at nights.

People are talking about the Missile Boat but WHERE IS ASSAULT GUNBOAT?!

Which is more reminiscent of the Lambda Shuttle in design. Kinda makes it fit in the "not a TIE, but an Imperal design" category for me.

I remember the Assault Gunboat in TIE fighter and thinking WTF? - looked totally out of place amongst all the other TIEs in the game, so not that bothered it's not released.

Do FFG have the rights to the assault gunboat anyway?

Overall -

Like the Punisher,

Meh for the scum ship

Really dont like the K-wing

HATE the Hounds tooth. its REALLY BAD.

Just a big box with wings lazily stuck on the back.

Its not FFGs fault though, they didnt design they ships from scratch.

Will I be buying them? of course I will. :)

At this point, I think it is safe to say it will sell because it's an X-wing game miniature.

True story. But the Gunboat would have sold more.

And what makes you think that? It could well be that loss of nostalgia sales are offset by increase in sales from people less deep into the EU who see a bigger TIE bomber.

I still cannot wrap my head around the fact FFG passed on both the more iconic Assault Gunboat and the Skipray Blastboat.

I like the Hound's Tooth. :)

Could be badass like those ugly HWKs. ^_^

I think you're right, I would have preferred an Aces Box for Y-Wing and Bombers. We all would have bemoaned the fact we have to buy additional ships that we already own and don't need any more of. So FFG would still get grief. But at least we wouldn't have the K-Wing or yet another model. Do you think the K-Wing and Punisher will be the same price as regular small ships?

I bet they cost as much as the StarViper... being huge and all.

I will still get three of 'em.

Until the reveal last week talk about the Punisher/Interdictor was at an absolute minimum.

For most fans it wasn't even on the radar.

People have been talking about the Gunboat for years; people willing to use proxies from shapeways. Shapeways doesn't even have Tie Punisher models because there has been no demand for virtually unknown Tie Bomber variant.

Yeah, a dedicated bombers pack with a Y-wing and TIE bomber would have been better. I wouldn't have complained. My fear now is that the new EU bombers are going to make the classic ships redundant even if the ordnance fix was universal.

Would still love to see Y-wing and TIE bomber aces.

I'm just curious because I know people also don't want prequel ships which would you have prefered?

Quoted for truth.

This is the John Cena of waves. Some of y'all love it and some of y'all hate it and that's OK. It doesn't make someone stupid or ignorant or the wrong sort of fan if they don't feel the same way you feel about whatever. Especially since at the moment we've only got the aesthetics of the ships to make any judgement on and aesthetics are super-duper-subjective.

I like the Punishadictor and even the K-Wing a bit, because I read comics in the nineties and therefore a part of my primal lizard brain still kind of equates crazy excess with cool (it's the same bit of my brain that thinks that Muse are, in some way, a good idea). Seriously, the K-Wing looks like it was designed by Rob Goddamn Liefeld and that is simultaneously terrible and amazing. But the same time, I can't disagree with anyone who thinks those ships are stupid and ugly, because a) they ARE pretty stupid and ugly but mostly b) eye of the beholder, you know?

Everyone's entitled to feel about this stuff the way they feel about it. Let's just try not to be dicks to each other in the process.

I'm just curious because I know people also don't want prequel ships which would you have prefered?

I would have far preferred an all-prequels wave, but I'm probably one of the few in that camp.

I still cannot wrap my head around the fact FFG passed on both the more iconic Assault Gunboat and the Skipray Blastboat.

I would not use the term "iconic" for any ship that has not really shown up outside it's initial game. A very few select ships have gotten exposure due to toys. Hell, there was a Lego set for the Defender.

FFG has shown they are willing to dig DEEP into the EU. Their preferences are not necessarily your preferences.

Tell me... you did not... just SAY THAT.

They probably will have their strengths and weaknesses. The new bombers probably will cost more and have worse dials than Y-Wings, B-Wings and TIE Bombers.
