FFG jumps the shark?

By xanderf, in X-Wing

Ugly... pretty. As someone who has worked on the C-130 Hercules for 20 years,"ugly" is for sure an individual opinion. I get this is a tabletop game based on make-believe, but for the most part, aren't these ships supposed to be war machines? Function-comes-first? From a war machine perspective, "ugly" often means "deadly"! Just an opinion. I am also curious how many new Armada lovers will be complaining in two or so years how their game "jumped the shark". Fly Casual X-Wingers- have a good weekend!

when we get the Yuuzhan Vong snot-ball bioship for Armada. Then i'm out.

I'm glad to see the Hound's Tooth but the others weren't on my radar. But after studying it up and hearing some of the stats, they're growing on me. Probably won't buy more than 1 of each but that means they're still making money off me. And that's ok with me.

Yeah. Now it's sunk in I'm minding wave 7 less and less.

I still feel that the TIE Interdictor and Kwingare what i'd expect to see FFG announcing as an april fools joke, along with the Coralskipper. I still fervently believe that they made the wrong call with the punisher and instead should have gone for one of the more popular imperial ordinance options, but hey ,new ships are new ships. Only yesterday I was commenting that hey, if all else fails introduce new ships. The new ships have the potential to be cool, and they might fix torpedoes - so there is that.

Let'sfly casual, and look forward to spoilers on what their cards do, eh?

So if I own 4 TIE bombers now how many of the new ships will I need to buy to fix them? But what if I want to play both the new and old bombers in the same Epic game then what?

They need to dump their stupid policy regarding the prequel stuff. There are way more players that would love to buy Naboo and ARC-170 fighters and LAAT gunships and Vulture droids and Tri-Fighters and Geonosian fighters (Clone Wars) then there are players that even know what these ships are let alone wants to buy them.

I think they are more concerned about the players that would quit if they had to face anything prequel related.

I'm not really a fan of the Prequels, however I think "scuffed up" prequel ships would be really thematic for S&V. I really wish they'd used some of those instead of some of the obscure EU stuff they are grabbing now. I'm just not digging the aesthetics of this wave.

Don't know what you're complaining about. They are all awesome.

totally agreed

Man, I hope I get to play against some of you "if my opponent plays a K-Wing, I'll quit!" guys at some of my tournaments around here. Thanks for the 200 MoV!

I'll just have to figure out how to make a playable all-K-wing squadron. I'll call it "Special K" or maybe "K-Zone".

Every small ship for the Empire has been a TIE model. FFG is being perfectly consistent on that point with the Punisher.

But is this a good thing? (if you are an assault gunboat fanboy the answer is probably no). (disclaimer: I am totally an assault gunboat fanboy and have been since 94).

I am afraid it won't be anything other than a "Double-K.(O.)"!

iam sure we will see the gunboat in wave 8 having this new action what the K-wing brings to this game and for the scum we will see this new ability on the skipray blast boats for sure. i cant wait for that to happen 2 super cool looking ships then in the future wave 8

Reactions.

KWing: I love that it looks like an old WWII bomber. Yeah, the quips about Homer Car and 6th Grade Detention Doodle have some truth to them, but in the end I like that it looks like a bunch of crazy ordidance and engines have been bolted on to such a quant ship design. It's cartoonishly terrifying!

Interdictor/Punisher: not a fan of the design, I already own some bombers, and it doesn't look different enough to pop out for me

Hound's Tooth: best ship of the wave for me.

It's so awkward, like a space bird that shouldn't be flying! Like someone grabbed a Jawa sandcrawler, threw wings on it, wished it good luck, and launched its poor ass into space! I LOVE IT.

As for the Kihraxz, it looks ok I guess but too much like an E-Wing for my taste, which is a a design that always left me flat.

That's why I dislike the Kihraxz they chose. Design Pattern 1 was always the most used and the best looking one.

Just wait, they're going to release that as a Vaksai or something and pretend the fighters are terribly different.

Vaksai might be an upgrade card...

The answer is definitely no. Video game designers have been mercilessly mocked for years now for adopting a lazy, uninspired and in some cases hysterically funny "add-one-more-cockpit-dash-wing-dash-pod" design method to the TIE series. FFG shouldn't be exempt from this.

The Imperial Navy's main identity is in their TIE series, yes. But the Empire also utilitises quite a few ships outside the TIE series, many of which would be just as good at filling the role intended for the TIE Punterdictor, and could do so without trampling all over the TIE Bomber's aesthetic.

And yes, I'm an XG-1 fanboy.

The XG-1 is not a superbomber.

Remember guys that the Interdictor and K-wing aren't the "the ships FFG wanted to make the most," they're "the ships FFG wanted to make the most that fulfilled the role they wanted for this wave."

Everything that's not a slow, lumbering superbomber is still open for future waves. The Skipray, XG-1, these aren't dead dreams. The only dead dream is the Scimitar Assault Bomber and that one deserved to die.

The Imperials already have a bomber, the TIE Bomber. The XG-1 has missiles (annoyingly so as I recall), so FFG could just have easily focused on that as part for an ordnance fix. Why did this release have to be a 'superbomber'? This rationalisation for the choice seems to be conjecture.

The XG-1 is a a Lambda shaped Y-wing.

I believe it is very unlikely the TIE punisher is merely a higher statted TIE bomber. Until we see the mechanics we can't really tell why FFG went with the TIE punisher, but it makes sense for their super heavy bomber to actually look like a TIE bomber.

I personally believe it was a great mistake not to put the article up at the same time as the release and leave the ships to fend on their aesthetics alone (although it may not have been practical if the announcement happened outside working hours). I believe the decisions will all make more sense on Monday when the articles go up.

If Wave 2 Armada was any indicator we won't get an announcement for 2 weeks.

If they go up Mon. It was a few weeks after GAMA that the Armada wave 2 Articles went up.

That's the thing; they can mold the mechanics to fit any model. There is absolutely nothing unique about that Tie Punisher model that couldn't be accomplished with half a dozen other models.

This is what im wondering about. The bomber has 2-2-6-0 arrangement with 2 torp, 2 missile, and a bomb slot. what in the hell does the "Punisher" provide that isn't just an up-sized version of that? And if they do just make a "bigger and better" version of the bomber, I'm going to be extremely upset that they gave they hamstrung the Defender so much to make it not a "bigger and better" interceptor.

Skipray Blastboat, Missile Boat, Scimitar Assault Bomber, Assault Gunboat, any of those could have filled the slot of an ordnance platform. The only constraint a model has is turrets, the Punisher doesn't have one.

You can't please every group, but you can try to hit a comfortable middle ground.

So... they're not the ships that we deserve, but they're the ships that we need right now? :)
