What's the social protocol for asking someone to play a game?

By Millennium Falsehood, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I've always been confused by social protocols... I've never been tested for Aspberger's, but I might have it based on that alone. In any case, I have almost no idea for how to properly approach someone to play a game. What time of day is best... how to judge their interest in the game... stuff like that is what my brain focuses on and it prevents me from even approaching people because there are too many variables.

So I want to eliminate some of those variables.

What do I do when I want to play a game of X-wing with a complete stranger at a con or at a store?

"Want to play a game?"

Complete stranger who you know plays X-wing or Complete stranger?

Throwing leaves in the air and screaming loudly initiates the challenge.

I generally just saunter up to someone who's setting up, snort derisively and say "seriously... you're flying THAT?!"

Shouldn't it at least be "You came in that? You're braver than I thought!"

I reserve that line for when I meet a person's significant other for the first time.

I take off my glove and slap them in the face with it. And say in a French accent, "I challenge you to a duel".

Maybe set up on a table to show that you want to play and ask around if anyone wants to play.

If you have reason to believe that they are already an X-Wing player, you coudl start by asking the obvious "You play X-Wing?" to which they will likely say yes, and then you say "Wanna play a quick game?"

If you don't know if they play X-Wing, but you suspect they might be a gamer in general, you can ask:

"Do you ever play Tabletop Games?" or "Have you ever heard of X-Wing?"

And follow up with "Are you interested in learning? I'm happy to teach or demo it for you".

"Meat sapian, I have a collection of human artifacts for the purpose of mock battle. Let use engage in simulated battle. Upon the completion of which you will be defeated and the superiority of the Sauron race will be demonstrated!"

Sorry my hypno conditioning is wairing off. I must return to the Illuminati temple.

Ask them if they want to have nookie, then when the awkward silence descends offer a game of x-wing instead they'll agree in a snap.

And if they don't then your getting laid so win win really.

Well, you could always take a page out of my book and ask to play other people's wives, but I wouldn't recommend it.

use wookie speech!!

I think Crabbocks advice is very sound.

I usually say to people in store i see playing. 'hey, if you've a free evening i'm looking for new gamers to fly agains, fancy a game'

with mates i say 'i've bought this wicked star wars space fighter game, bit like warammer but cooler, fancy a go?'

stuff like that works for me

"Hi! Are you here to play? Fancy playing a game of X-Wing?"

Actually a lot easier than proposing WH40k or the likes since normally I arrive in my FLGS completely overequipped and can field almost any list for my opponent as well :)

I need that on a t-shirt!

"I challenge you to a d-d-duel!" No wait thats for Yugioh :D

What Crabbok said.

And i know how you feel, sometimes I see peole play a game at my local gamestore, but it somehow feels like I'm intruding if I ask If I can join in.

But remember: If you don't ask, then they wont have a chance to say: "Yes, I'd love to play a game!" Really the worst thing that can happen is that they just say "No." or "X-wing? Dafuq is dat?".*

* Actualy the worst thing they can say is: "No, but i play 40k 7th edition. I got an all Knights army!" :D I'm kidding here, guys!

I generally bring my stuff out and start messing with it. Then I ask in a general sense if anyone wants to play. A lot of the time just bringing out your stuff and going over it will start a conversation which can lead to a game.

Really the worst thing that can happen is that they just say (...) "X-wing? Dafuq is dat?".

Well, in that case, I believe the only valid response is to say "Please allow me to introduce you to the glory you've been missing!"
