How many waves does X-Wing actually need?

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Calling it now: we'll have some Waves designed specifically after ships that appear in the upcoming films, along with the spin-off films, but if at some point things are too slow and we're scraping too low on the EU barrel...

We'll get new factions in the form of the Old Republic and the Confederation of Independent Systems.

But I see that being many, many years down the line. The EU is still rich with ships that can be added, and the new films/ongoing canon from other media will likely bring in plenty more. My only concern will be FFG's ability to make new ships interesting and have a "place" in gameplay, all while making efforts to keep things balanced... which they have. At the moment basically everything can be in a competitive list; even the lowly TIE Bomber (I'd say easily the least popular ship currently out) can be worked with, though it could really, really use the (apparently) upcoming ordnance overhaul to enter regular rotation among lists. But hey, it was just a wave ago that Y-Wings were considered some of the worst ships, and now look at those plucky little bastards. And the truth is, they were still pretty fun to play with even before they got the title and access to bombs. And to think, they're one of the ships most likely to benefit from a fix to ordnance!

Paint a classic trilogy ship a different color. Release it as a solo ace pack.

Rinse and repeat.

Forever.

Reading this thread has convinced me, I'm excited for a reprint of this game.

I want a balanced, fun game with Y-wings, tie fighters and interceptors, b wings, luke, chewie, vader, etc. - the iconic characters and ships from the OT. so, wave 3 plus all the aces and with the addition of balancing mechanisms like autothrusters, the Tie advanced buff and a tweak for munitions.

I'd love that. The pull of the original star wars trilogy was a huge part of my initial attraction to this game, i would absolutely love a more-refined, polished version of this game with only original trilogy ships and pilots.

The game has become too complex as it is. There's a sweet spot, and I think we're already beyond it.

Simple.

All of them.

ALL OF THE WAVES.

IMO, maybe do some mega big ships and a few random ships and call it quits. There is no way the average person can afford to buy multiples of most ships.

Sucks you feel we're beyond that spot. Anything crazier than this Wave 7 will be too much for me.

Clearly - "Just one more wave" is always the answer.

At least long enough for Cad Bane to appear on Rebels and then get added to this game.

X-WING FOREVER!

:D

Seeing that the EU was thrown out and alot of new Star Wars is in the future the skies the limit really. I dont think they will be done in just 2 waves. They came up with the Raider by working with Disney, whats to say the director of the future star wars projects may envision all new ships and FFG is able to capitalize on those

You are SOOOO right. The thing is that the game is getting bogged down, with more and more upgrades that aren't needed!

It has definitely gotten to the point where they are bringing out a card because they just made another ship and they HAVE to have a new card to go with it.

They've also copied this method with Assault and Armada, so that to start with you have to buy new ships to get half the rules... and then they will be adding more and more rules which aren't needed, but they feel compelled to invent simply to add another card to an expansion.

i say the more the better i love this game and hope to have fun with this for the next i dont know 100 years ? no really x wing is doing fine for meh

FFG shut up and take ma moneh pleaaaaase

I would like to see the cloakshape, Zuckuss & 4-LOM, Dengar, the skipray blastboat, the assault gunboat, and several epic ships for each faction before calling it quits.

Wish I'd seen this topic before making a new one :(

And yeah, I agree

This game is pretty much complete, and now it feels like it's starting to drift away from the OT , and that's kinda bad

That's not so bad. The OT is horribly limited in what it can offer. What gets me is what they're starting to pull from the EU.

The number of waves produced will be exactly one greater than the number of waves with good sales numbers.

I hope that they pull a bit away from the EU and focus on 1) patching existing X-Wing and 2) doing ships from the new movies! the EU is interesting and all (go read that history of the Moldy Crow thread that is floating around), but as more and more ships get released it starts to feel less and less like Star Wars to me, and more like generic battles in space with ships using the X-Wing mechanic.

and the xwing itself needs no fixing at all. it was discussed in so many threads now That it gets Tiring people yelling a fix for a ship That does fine.

Not Star wars for u? yeah Lets throw in the naboo n1 star fighter and the CIS Star fighters cause it Seems thats all u know about Star wars movie fighters But Not the rest.

Id say four was enough

Feel sorry for Star Trek Attack Wing, WizKids just announced wave 19. Yes, wave 19 and that game came out AFTER X-Wing!

I'm a much bigger Star Wars fan and I hope FFG take their time and keep going with waves rather than try and do what Wizkids does and cram out a release of 3 ships every month (which has lead to soooooo many problems with AW).

what Kind of a xwing mechanic u are speaking of? u know this mechanic got copied from a game called wings of glory? a World War I Flight game?

Re: wings of glory mechanic, yep, I did know that! :-)

Re: XWing itself needing fixed - The Big Lebowski said it best .

Re: Star Warsy - the first three movies only sort of feel Star Warsy to me. The Dear J J Abrams video represents my feeling on this.

I want all the ships. Everything...

I don't think the game is too complex. It has grown into a behemoth, for sure, but it still has the smallest rule book of any miniatures game I've ever played.

I think ffg are doing a brilliant job of evolving the game, and I am looking forward to many new waves of bounty hunter stuff, eu stuff, and hopefully new stuff.

Here's hoping for a rogue squadron box. :)

I've got no problems with more waves. I'm just glad they're slowing down. I think the constant announcement cycle had me a bit burnt out. Now though that I've had a chance to get caught up I'm excited again.

The game mechanics are simple and even if several upgrades aren't as useful now they might be in the future (looking at deadeye to make a potential splash with the ordnance upconung)

If they moved to a non compatible second edition I wouldn't buy in. My miniatures budget is already stretched with xwing armada and imperial assault.

If they moved to a non-compatible second edition, I'd bow out too - I've spent way too much to just start again. I really can't see that happening though.
