Try and think of 5 more ships for each faction. There, 5 waves right there. Prequel ships can diaf btw, so can the hounds tooth and blastboat.
Add any ships from the new movies and we've got a decent amount of waves left.

How many waves are there on a beach?
Players will come and go but to keep the game alive they have to continue to put out product.
Personally, I'm hoping for the Miy'Til fighter to make a wave eventually. Probably won't happen though.
There are a lot of letters in the alphabet that haven't been covered yet.
Lots of Greek letters not covered as part of squadrons.
Then it could move on to Chinese characters.
Dronevil, I disagree with the compatibility.
Do 2, maybe 3 more waves spaced out through the end of 2016. That gives them time to flesh out scum and load up a few more big names/ships that haven't released yet.
Then release 2nd edition starting with Ep7,8,9 stuff. But leave it compatible. You could have old and new x-wings in a squad, and they'd be slightly difference in performance, but still balanced. Dropping compatibility would hurt the game.
If they stopped supporting 1st edition, people would look at the $ they paid as a waste now that it wasn't usable. Then they'd be reluctant to throw that much more at 2nd edition.
If prequel ever came out, do it as 3rd edition, but do it after all the ep7/8/9 stuff is released a year or so after the last movie.
The issue I would have with that is that, in theory, the new ships should be better in most ways than the old ships. Technology improves and power increases during a war. To balance that with the older ships would mean the new ones would all cost more points and we'd end up in a situation where you'd only get a couple of new ships in a squad together. That would hurt sales and be less awesome to play, as well as being hard to balance if all the new ships could potentially one shot many of the old ones. It also means all the current niggles would remain in the game. Starting afresh would allow FFG to have a clean slate and not make the same mistakes they made with X-Wing (e.g. some cards are over-costed... some ships have required post-release fixes to increase/decrease power etc.).
I see your point regarding money. Perhaps they could do a repaint set for each faction each year, to keep the game alive as a distinct alternative? Some people could stick with X-Wing, others could move on to X-Wing II and then there'll always be some (many?) who play both. The crossover in players between ST Attack Wing, DnD Attack Wing and X-Wing shows that there are certainly people out there with space in their lives for multiple Flight Path system games.
Honestly, I'm pretty well set with what I've got. The only ship I'm inclined towards that hasn't been released or announced is the TIE Hunter, and I'm not even overly anxious for that.
Maybe a "remastered" old ship every year where they re-release an old set of ships with a new paint job and body style tweaks.
I might go for that, depending on what the cards included were.
How many waves are there on a beach?
How far past H-hour are we, and how much of the timetable has gone awry?
I think they would be doing themselves a favor in the long run if they would release new pilot and upgrade cards without ships (eventually).
47 minutes past H hour. But the captain pulled the ship back out to open water for fear of
shore batteries so no covering fire.
Also your AAV is making funny noises.
I bet we'll see at least a dozen more waves. There are MANY designs that are viable and unique that haven't been covered yet, at least 40 if memory serves from the last time I tried to calculate how many ships were left in "starfighter-scale". If they release an average of 3-4 ships per wave, that gives us about 10-12 waves. Then there are repaints, resculpts, new pilots... plenty of ways to keep the game alive.
As many as it takes!
X-wing needs two more full waves and a ".5" release every year until I die.
Done. I will be along when the game is discontinued.
Until every ship in the universe may be represented for all 4 key eras (old republic, clone wars, galactic civil war, the force awakens timeline) then more waves please.
2 more after the Raider...that should about do it for the OT era. Then...why not move into the prequels.
Why pre-quel ships, when you can have Episode 7 ships?

To annoy members of this forum who are dead set against prequel ships, obviously.
(Note, the above is intended as a joke, again).
In all seriousness I reckon we'll eventually see both.
How many more waves until we've successfully navigated the 6 asteroid field? 3,720.
Obvs.

Two, pinned on top of eachother, and number three is coming in. "No movement detected off the beach."
It's a good point to raise. When I get together with one of my friends who has a few wave 1 ships but doesn't play that often, the amount of upgrade cards I bring is a little overwhelming.
Personally, I'm not really interested in more ships (except maybe more huge ships) but I'm very interested in new pilots for existing ships, more upgrade cards (despite my comment above) and possibly new gameplay mechanics (e.g. Segnor's loop).

I was surprised when wave seven was hinted to be a bomber fix wave. I was expecting a wave giving all factions access to the S turn to be next.

I'd love to give the X-Wing an S-loop, but adding it to the dial would be tricky.
Wow, I'm surprised no one has jokingly said this yet. So I feel obligated since it was the first thing that popped into my head when reading the OP.
OVER 9000!!!!!!
More ships. Less upgrade cards.

Well it is safe to say that all the "fighter" type ships from the original trilogy (ep IV, V, and VI) have been released in X-wing. We are now using the expanded universe to include stuff from Rebel Assault (Tie Phantom), Shadows of the Empire (Outrider), Star Wars Galaxies (VT-49 Decimator) and the novels (moldy crow) to add ships in. So there is already mentioning of another wave or even 2 coming up so we can expect a few more ships but they will be less of the iconic ones and more from other sources.
What we can expect a S&V Aces pack and a S&V epic ship with waves in between. We know Wave 7 will be after the Raider so Aces or Epic will likely be after that followed by Wave 8 and the other pack to make the circle is now complete. So It is safe to say we can expect 8 waves. After that their future is clouded. With Armada coming out and in need of some ships to start being a competitive game up to the standards set X-wing competitive play they will be needing waves to com out at a faster pace than X-wing. So it is possible that Wave release for X-wing will slow down while Armada sees the first 4 waves and some special packs within the next year or two.
Still I think the OP's question is what will we do when we run out of ships and waves. Well their are two logical answers. One of them is to continue adding ships from other movies either making their clone wars faction or tie them with other faction. However due to the unpopularity of the prequels this comes as an exceptional risk.
The other is to go back and start at square 1. That is to reprint the core set and make a 2nd edition. With this second edition you could have new pilots or old pilots with new abilities. You can also add in new damage cards, dice for torpedo and missile weapons, longer range rulers if needed as well as the 3rd faction ship in the 2nd core set along with an updated rule book that includes all the new actions maneuvers and the latest rule changes. As for all the models and cards that are out. Well the models can be used again the cards FFG could declare them to be phased out or just simply let them stay in play. So now if you want to include Luke You have 2 pilot abilities to choose from as long as you are not using the crew card.
The question is how long will FFG keep the SW license, therefore producing X-Wing stuff (no matter what)? The game needs new releases now and then (from my experience I would say at least 2 per year) to keep the gamers onboard, even if the new releases aren't really adding to the game (mechanic) - for whatever reason people stop playing and change to other (new) systems when the company doesn't release anything new.
If FFG drops the game will there be another reliable company to pick it up?
I was close to the point were I felt that the new stuff isn't adding to the game overall. Imperial Aces was already lame (autothrusters should have been in that one). Wave 5 wasn't really a plus. And they completely messed up the whole Huge Ship thing IMHO. Scum on the other hand is great, good job on creating a new faction that plays differently, makes one want to see more ;-)
I don't see a 2nd ed coming anytime soon, probably never from FFG.
However many waves it takes to get the TIE Avenger in the game.
