How many waves does X-Wing actually need?

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

It seems obvious that X-Wing production is slowing down a little. I don't think that is a bad thing to be honest. The game is always going to be a hit, but I don't think that means we need a new wave every 3 months either. There is SO much product out there for X-Wing right now, you have to begin to think that at some point every faction is going to have multiple ships that fill every role...

So how many more waves are we going to expect? Obviously right now I think we need to see all of the bounty hunters, and a few other key people like Tarkin, Motti, Thrawn, Starkiller and Obi Wan Kenobi... and there are a few ships that the game could probably really benefit from... but it's not a large number. I'd say within 2 more waves we might be nearing a "perfect" number of ships. Maybe at that point we see an anual aces pack for some balancing? What do you guys think?

In honor of the Falcon, 1300 waves.

I honestly could see this 'phase' of x-wing coming to a close in 1 or 2 more waves. Hammer out any major strengths/weaknesses that need to be addressed, and get the Scum up to full force with a few more ships.

Then I see them releasing a new core (same rules, just refined with some changes/corrections) and starting with the new movies.

2 more after the Raider...that should about do it for the OT era. Then...why not move into the prequels.

It is getting to the point where there is almost too much. I worry about the game getting too bloated and becoming "too big" for new players. I understand that FFG needs to release something every now and again to push sales, but I fear power creep and bloat.

Maybe a "remastered" old ship every year where they re-release an old set of ships with a new paint job and body style tweaks.

All of them. It needs all the waves.

All of them.

Seriously, there is at least a good 7 waves left, imo. That is without side releases and whatever Rebels or the movies introduces.

At least one more, Mr. Crabbok.

X-wing needs two more full waves and a ".5" release every year until I die.

Back in the X-wing era - 93 to 99 the games introduced loads of new ships to canon.

I see no reason that x-wing minis can't do this.

How many waves does X-Wing actually need?

All of them.

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.

The answer. Is blowing.

In.

The.

Wind.

There are four more ships I want to see in the game. Two Rebel, two Imperial*. Whilst I don't collect Scum, I'd also be glad to see them release the ships for Bossk, Dengar and Zuckuss/4-LOM. Throw one more Scum ship into the mix (people seem to want the Otana) and that would give you two waves of 1x Rebel, 1x Imperial, 2x Scum. After that, to be honest, I'd like the game to be complete in terms of new ships.

With the Raider coming and, presumably at some point, a huge ship for Scum, that would round out Epic and then an Aces set for each faction to deal with any remaining balance issues would be beautiful.

They could then start a whole new game using ships from the new films only... basically X-Wing 2nd Edition. It wouldn't replace X-Wing and the ships and cards wouldn't be transferable. That would deal with the fact that the new ships should be a whole lot more advanced than the old... therefore making the old ones redundant. They could even do the same with the prequel ships (for those crazy people who want them), so end up with 3 games.

*T-Wing, R-41 Starchaser, TIE Avenger and Assault Gunboat

Good question; it's getting a bit overwhelming. I was thinking of stopping after the Raider. Decent balance, but the ordnance and X-Wings many feel are still a little weak but over all. I'd love to get one more Imperial Epic in addition to the Raider.

I'd have been happy after wave 3, with the OT ships (well, except the HWK). Wave 4 was just OK, and wave 5 wasn't that interesting for me and the yt-2400 is almost as dumb looking as the b-wing. I've only played with the wave 5 ships once.

I'll get the raider, and an assault gunboat if it comes out (already have a shapeways mini), but after that I'm done.

Still a fun game, but I don't feel like adding more ships to it is going to make it any better. I already have a giant plano box full of minis. (1 of each big ship, ~4-6 of each little ship, the cr90 and the transport). I'm into D&D attack wing also, on I think wave 6 now, and I'm finding the same thing. After 6 waves, I've got a ton of stuff and there's no point spending $60+ on yet another wave -- it's not going to improve the game.

Dronevil, I disagree with the compatibility.

Do 2, maybe 3 more waves spaced out through the end of 2016. That gives them time to flesh out scum and load up a few more big names/ships that haven't released yet.

Then release 2nd edition starting with Ep7,8,9 stuff. But leave it compatible. You could have old and new x-wings in a squad, and they'd be slightly difference in performance, but still balanced. Dropping compatibility would hurt the game.

If they stopped supporting 1st edition, people would look at the $ they paid as a waste now that it wasn't usable. Then they'd be reluctant to throw that much more at 2nd edition.

If prequel ever came out, do it as 3rd edition, but do it after all the ep7/8/9 stuff is released a year or so after the last movie.

The nice part of doing a 2nd edition but leaving compatibility, it would give a new starting point. New players could get in with 2nd edition, and start collecting from there without feeling like they missed out. Fans of the new movies would be familiar with the new ships.

One way or the other, the slow down in ship production and wave releases is probably a good thing. I think they've been saturating the market so far.

dammit you're right.

I’m a completionist (not a word!) with no interest in the Scum faction, so I’m ready for them to pull the plug!

Ah, the good old days, when bringing an A-wing to the table was considered “spicing” things up haha.

As a player who only plays with friends, there was an itch in the beginning to play almost all night, but that lust has waned significantly over the past year as I introduced new ships and upgrade cards every time we met. I think it’s true that too much of a good thing can make you sick.

But I wouldn’t say no to card packs in the future (like the TIE advanced upgrades for people who don’t want to pick up the Raider).

(N+1)

The thing about 2nd editions people are talking about, is that they ignore FFG's past policies. FFG uses a 2nd edition to revitalize a game that has slowed down, sales wise. But, the important thing is, that this is after a significant break between the end of one edition and the start of the new edition. Or, they create a new edition due to massive problems with the old game. This is where AGOT LCG falls into. And X-wing, currently, is no where near the mess that AGOT LCG was. And there would've been a good sized break if not for the dock strikes.
