How do I paint slash wounds on a stormtrooper

By Elrath', in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I have 1 more stormtrooper to paint and in honor of Gaarkhan's brutality in the last campaign (**** Vibroblade with cleave 2), I don't want to paint the usual blaster damage but rather a slash wound/damage. But as I'm inexperienced I don't know the best way to do this.

I was thinking about painting a light gray line and then inside that a darker gray line to make it seem deeper cut and perhaps carefully add dark wash on the line to darken it further. Could this work? Or are there better ways? I'd like to paint the damage like it was caused by an ax or a vibroblade.

Hi Elrath,

I'd be tempted to physically gash the miniature with a craft knife, then perhaps paint the slash as you describe. Can't get much more authentic than that :)

I thought about that too but I wasn't sure if that was a good way to go. But I think I'll try that. My trooper is already in the black wash phase so just the most time consuming phase left. Maybe I'll use the knife to make the slash now.

Hopefully FFG brings out a normal stormtrooper unit pack so I can replace mine if I happen to "ruin" them. :)

If you do use the knife to make some slashes you will want to wash those too to bring them more visible :)

You're in luck. A normal storm trooper pack was announced a few days ago.

Well, here's my work in progress. I hate how the stormtrooper's arms turned out. And the helmet. It actually looks better now that I used a sharp knife to shave off a little bit of it and paint some blast damage there using Mephisto Red mixed together with Averland Sunset to create the embers and then paint some Rhinox Hide and Abbadon Black mix on top of it. The embers don't show in the image well but I like how that turned out. It looks like the bit is still smoldering but cooling off.

The wound itself is not too visible. It's in the torso just below the chest armor plate. I used some Mephisto Red to try and imitate some blood on the slash wound.

Oh, and hooray for the storm trooper unit packs! Doesn't matter as much if I ruin a couple of stormtroopers. :)

Just keep in mind that the stormtrooper pack is a slightly different sculpt than the one in the core set.
