Star Wars Battlefront

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in X-Wing

Dice has a lot of goodwill to earn back from me before I buy anything from them again.

I really hope they don't screw this one up.

It's EA. Expect many, many patches...

...And, if Hard Line is anything to go by, $20~ of content with a $60~ price tag (yes, everyone has different perspectives on what a dollar is worth, but give me a freakin' break).

Also, I didn't mind the initial bugginess of the latest full-blown Battlefield experience as much as I found some of the core design concepts offensive, and I don't know that those things were ever patched out. Really, I have to grind-out levels in order to be able to do anything fun in the jet? Really? I have to 'unlock' the kits I want to play with by playing matches over and over again with crap I'm not interested in?

If there is anything beyond the most unobtrusive, pretty-much-optional progression system tacked-on to Battlefront, which was a brilliant game right out of the box and required no Goddamn DLC or grinding or micro transactions or [insert arbitrary barrier to actually having fun in the game here], I will flip a table.

Okay, I'll probably actually just whine.

Whatever.

I think both DICE and EA will be very careful with Battlefront. They've learned from DAII, ME3, SimCity and Sims 4 seems to be a sign of a new approach.

Expect a higher price tag, but I think they're going to take great care to deliver on the product. Nobody wants to be the company that screws up Battlefront.

Well, it's a little too late for that.

Battlefront 2 is pretty much the same game with some engine improvements.

They'll be careful, but they're on really thin ice and I'm super apprehensive. When I see some gameplay that doesn't look like a Battlefield 4 clone, I'll be way happier. But, who knows.

If we're totally honest Battlefront II was essentially a rushed mod made by a big team.

EDIT: That's a disservice to Modders everywhere. Sorry.

...Also, about that screenshot: the lighting looks decidedly pre-rendered. I'm reasonably confident that no real time engine can currently handle light/shadows of that complexity yet.

I'm also rather skeptical of the foliage. The final textures are almost surely going to be downgraded from that (huge performance / memory sink for something the player is going to see only in passing).

I really don't like the trend of 'bullshots' (yes, it's always been a thing; I've never liked it)

EDIT: Speeder and scouter trooper look both great & legit, though.

Just a shame the developers / publishers aren't confident enough in their genuine assets to show them off. :|

Maybe this time around we'll get the Phase III Darktrooper.

Dude you and me both.

I want an actual proper Dark Trooper Phase II, not these botched cyborg failures that Battlefront keeps trying to push on us.

Overall I think battlefront 2 was good for its time, of course giving the darktrooper a static gun was a bad move, but overall I felt the core mechanics for what the consoles/PC could handle at the time were Fantastic. Epic space battles? Check. Compelling land engagements? Check. Playable Jedi? Check. For a 2005 game it was awesome.

I'm reasonably confident it'll be a let down. It's pretty clear that it's battle front in name only. Plus dice has had a lot of trouble with the concept that making games more and more similar to call of duty doesn't make them better.

I've gone from being excited about online fps games and then being disappointed, to now where I always expect them to be garbage so that when a good one comes along I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Seems like every game these days has to have gated content (carrot on a stick), and Homey don't play that.

yea, this isn't likely an actual "in game" shot (although current gen/pc rendering is getting quite good eg.. GTA V, Bloodborne) someone just pulled high detail rendered background image from their news page.

I'm just annoyed that EA abandoned the PC market.

And have made crap out of every game I've been excited about front them for years.

Stupid EA.

I just get the sneaking suspicion that their goal is less "do right by battlefront" and more "let the battlefront name and Star Wars IP sell this game for us."

Awesome graphics and "wow, I've never done that in a game before" moments are not what made battlefront great. Terrible AI and sloppy physics actually made those games more entertaining and I know they'll go to great lengths to debug that charm out of it.

I just get the sneaking suspicion that their goal is less "do right by battlefront" and more "let the battlefront name and Star Wars IP sell this game for us."

Given how long they've taken over it (they've been making it since the Disney purchase announcement), how DICE petitioned EA to be able to make it (it was their idea, not the EA bosses) and how much they seem to care about getting it right (whereas I doubt they care nearly as much about serial Battlefield games nowadays) I think their idea is "do Battlefront right, take your time and make it good. It's the first Battlefront in a long time, let's not make it look like a cheap cash in."

Battlefront will sell, Battlefront will make a ton regardless. The choice is to look at that and think "make crap it'll sell" or "we don't need to "economise" on this one, it'll make tons more than we spend on it whatever we spend so let's do it justice and set up goodwill for the next one." From what I've seen the second one is their line of thinking.

I'd be excited but I've played EA games before.

As I understand it battlefield four still isn't 100% even now.

Battlefront II Wasn't terrible, but I did miss the atmospheric starfighter combat.

Also not really a fan of elite unlocks in any game. Unlocks should be minor at best replacing items that are useful that you get at level 1, OR alternatively merely cosmetic.

also STUPID F**KING AUTOTURRETS! WHY??? I mean i can out dogfight anything in that game, but those things are just so **** accurate.

Am I the only one who thought Battlefront I and II were crap? I was really excited about them, but the games were always one sided. The side with the jetpacks always won. People would fight at choke points. The side with jet packs would skirt around and flank them. That side won. It was the same no matter if it was Clone Wars or Rebellion and it didn't matter which map! I didn't like it.

Can I say that I've been playing Battlefield since the first game years ago? I mean, since before my kids were born (and one is about to drive). I really have enjoyed the Battlefield series and felt that Battlefront was a cheap rip off attempt of Battlefied...but with Star Wars. I didn't like it. I've been really happy with how Battlefield has played through all it's variations (on pc). I like the games. It's one of the few pc games I still play. I'm excited that Star Wars is going to actually be by the same people who do Battlefield...as opposed to some crappy knock off.

I found battlefront 1 and 2 fun but imperfect, but I did enjoy them.

I preferred Republic commando and I would like a Star Wars Imperial commando so very much.

November this year is the rumored release date. I hope this title isn't rushed. EA rushes out everything they do. DICE has made some great games, but ever since they have fallen under the EA umbrella its gone downhill. Hopefully, they get this one right. Or at least playable at launch. The few images that we've seen look gorgeous.

Battlefront along with Halo5 will probably sell the Xbox one for me, and so far that console just doesn't have enough going for it to make it worth buying.
