Hey folks, what are we all using in the way of card sleeves/protectors?

By Chucknuckle, in X-Wing

I'm fairly new to all this. I'm thinking that with routine handling over many years, the cards and dials will begin to wear out and fray. Personally, I want to keep my ship cards in a folder so that I can more easily find them and put together a fleet. But I also want to keep them in sleeves so they don't get damaged during use. Are there any folders which allow the use of card protectors? Or do I really have to pick one or the other?

What about the upgrade and damage cards? They're an odd size, are there protectors (or folder sheets) for them on the market? I'm hoping some of you good folks will have already done the legwork on this issue given that the game has been out for a while, so hopefully I can get some good feedback on what works and what doesn't :)

Thanks in advance!

FFG sells exactly what you're looking for.

Sleeved, the upgrades/damages fit perfectly sideways into regular card pages.

I really dislike the FFG sleeves. They are good quality, but they are too tall. I use KMC Perfect Fits for ship cards. I use nothing for my other cards because there are just so many of them. I do store them in coin collector sheets though.

FFG sleeves are color coded based on what size cards they fit. On the back of every FFG product is a little box that tells you how many of each type of FFG sleeve you need that product. Rounded up to the nearest full pack, so there is a lot of excess in x-wing expansions, but still useful. The upgrade/damage deck cards use FFG yellow sleeves, while the regular card size cards are...gray, I think.

I have the pilot cards all in FFG star wars themed sleeves, stored in two X Wing card boxes (they used to be Ultrapro card boxes but scum ruined that). I have my upgrade cards in cheap mayday (?) sleeves. They're cheap, and they definitely feel cheap. However they serve the purpose of protecting them from oils and drink spills. These are stored in an ultra pro side loading card binder, up to 4 per pocket (I only carry two copies of things these days with the exception of CR, and I put the duplicate behind the first one). My damage deck is in FFG sleeves, but I chose one size larger than what they're supposed to use. As such, it's very easy to tell my damage cards from everyone else's. These are stored in a bin at the top of my box.

As for dials, I sprayed Krylon clear coat on all of them before I assembled them. Then I put a 1/8'' nylon washer in between the two halves. They now have a very shiny and "deeper" look, and haven't worn at all. Most of the dials have the perfect amount of friction, but a few spin too easily. I've fixed that now by pressing on the black connector as I'm selecting a maneuver.

Hmm. Would it be worth pulling my dials apart (I've only got half a dozen or so) and spraying them? Or am I more likely to damage them that way?

You're more likely to damage your nails than you are the dials. There have been several that I've had to take apart (probably the first dozen that I had, plus a few every now and then that I've bought and used that night). My nails always end up in pain afterwards, but I haven't damaged the dials at all.

Khyros, thanks for that idea; I'm gonna have to disassemble my dials and try it!

I play a reasonable amount but have yet to see the need for sleeves. My dials have some wear and tear on them, as do my range rulers and movement templates, but not the cards. I mean... they just lay there on the table, you don't really hold them or handle them other than when you are looking through them to select what you want. I have had kids play with them. I have spilled beer on them (but wiped them off soon after). What the heck are you people doing with your cards that I am not?

Not being sarcastic here... What do people do that actually puts wear and tear on them?

The natural oils that human skin gives off can damage them. Accidental drops happen. Also as mentioned above, spilled drinks could be a fear depending on if you keep your drinks at your gaming table or not. And beer is quite a bit easier to clean than Mountain Dew or Coke for example.

For the price of a few dollars, why not put them in sleeves?

I've actually gotten quite a few of my sleeves for free. Several of the guys at my store play the LCG, and eventually the sleeves stop shuffling well, but are still fully functional for X wing. So they give them to me instead of throwing them out.

As people stated, you have to check the number and the color code. I think the small cards are yellow 1. I really wanted some at one point and they didn't have that exact kind. I bought something like grey 1 and tried them. They were too tall. The others are perfect, but I have some of my cards that the sleeves are too tall. I really should get out some scissors at some point.

I kind of did what Fnords did. I bought a bunch of the different sleeves, but then I traded with people online to get as many varieties as I could. So, I have all my Ties Fighters with one background. I have all my Interceptors with another. I spread them out as much as I can and I love it. I can tell from the back what ships they are. Well...at least that they are different than the others as I can't recall ALL of the different kinds. There aren't enough Scum covers yet.

I use perfect fit MTG sleeves (they are meant to be exactly the size of a card, so you can double sleeve MTG cards) and the FFG yellow #1 sleeves. I also store all my cards in a Monster brand binder because I find that with slightly smaller pockets than the ultra pro binders that the upgrade cards don't slide around near as much. I put the half cards in sideways in the side load binder. Its easy to create a fleet really quickly!

The perfect fit sleeves are okay, but I really like the idea of all the different backed sleeves!

Edit: almost forgot: damage deck is also sleeved, and I wrote my initials on the white side on the sleeves in permanent green marker. Makes it SUPER easy to see if I have all my damage cards! As hard as we try, those things get mixed up once in awhile.

I don't sleeve up my pilots and upgrades. It's not magic where damage or rarity matters. I might start sleeving the promos, but so far they just sit in my binder.

The damage deck, on the other hand, I do sleeve because my first one o shuffled bad and chewed up. Gotta make this second one last.

Yeah, but they look cooler. :)

Just look at fools dance for the swag from official events! Fools like me, I should point out.

I know about the color coding system. While it is possible I messed it up, I've sleeved over 100 boardgames, so I've been around the block on this. The cards are 63mm x 88mm, which is fantasy flight silver/grey sleeves. No other sleeve they sell is wide enough.

Here is a picture of KMC perfect size vs. FF sleeves. KMC on the left, FF on the right. I'll grant that FF sleeves are much thicker, but I like the fit much better on the KMCs.

Nothing..

Nothing for most cards. I keep alt arts in leftover UltraPros from Netrunner decks. The only cards getting shuffled on any regular basis are damage cards anyway.

I look at them while I'm sitting on the toilet.

Don't you have X-wing Companion? Oh, you must have an iPhone.

Yes... Can you still download off Google play?

Not sure if it's out yet but google is making a browser app that you can use to download their stuff onto other OS.

I use the FFG sleeves for the upgrade cards. These are then put in a business card holder in a binder and sorted by type.

I use Dragon Shield sleeves for the pilot cards (Rebels are red, Imeprials are black, and Scum is orange). The Dragon Shields fit very nicely into the side load Ultrapro binder sheets.

Sadly no....
