Switching OL Basic I and Basic II decks between quests + lava throwing :)

By TallerThanYou, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I fell in love in Descent 2nd Ed a couple years ago after playing 2 quests at a friend's house...

Finally got my hands on the base game and 2 expansions LotW and LoR and we have recently finished the Shadow Rune campaign (I lost playing as the OL but I still love this game ;)

1)

I am now preparing to begin a new campaign and I'd like to know if the OL is allowed to change from Basic I to Basic II deck between quests of the same campaign or should he stick to one Base deck throughout the entire campaign?

2)

While the first question is just something I am wondering about in preparation for future plays the second question concerns a situation we came up in Monster's Hoard quest of the base campaign we just finished..

I lost that quest because I based my strategy on an assumption that throwing a hero into a lava space will knock him out... hero players disagreed.

So here is my question:

What happens when a hero is thrown onto a Lava Space by an Ettin using it's Throw ability?

Does the hero get knocked out or does he only suffer 1♥ as per the rule book?

Rules on lava spaces page 18: "A figure entering a space containing lava immediately suffers one damage. Any figure that ends its turn in a lava space is immediately defeated."

I only know this because I've seen it before:

The player would only take one damage, because he didn't actually "end his turn" in the square, as it wasn't his turn when he entered. Now, if you also managed to Immobilize him there...

I don't know about the deck switching though... I'd think you'd be locked into your deck, since your players are. (A Berserker can't decide between quests to become a Knight, so it seems the OL shouldn't be able to, either)

1) The starting deck you pick is your starting deck for the entire campaign- you cannot switch. You can find this in the Labyrinth of Ruin rules.

2) As it says in base game rules under "lava," a figure is only defeated when it ends its turn in a lava space. Throwing a figure into lava only causes it damage. If the hero is still in the lava at the end of his next turn (perhaps you immobilized him in the lava) only then will he be defeated. It's the section you quoted above.

Thank you for your detailed answers.

Remember that a figure takes the 1 damage for every lava square it enters, so if you throw someone in lava, try and throw him somewhere it will take him more than 1 square to get out of.
