Episode 7 X-Wing is a T-70, and they're not Rebels and Empire anymore...

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

I suppose this kills "the Empire loses everything at Endor" thing. Looks like the Empire got their game together after Endor.

If anything, they'd get stronger. They no longer have the Emperor's questionable leadership, nor the constant drain of building Death Stars.

I would rather make "First = Original" from the name of the new Imperials as First Order (the plaque reads as if the Crimson Empire guys we are seeing are them); makeing them some sort of Empire-revival group inside a post-civil war galaxy ... the appeal to be the "original"/"pure"/"real" incarnation of something is a very common speech and identification pattern for cults and fundamentalists after all...

On top of that "Resistance" has a more covert connotation than "Rebel" which might give us a clue that the First Order are not visibly evil, which explains some of the scences we have scene before with one of the leads looking like he had been hunted through the desert

I'd imagine the Empire probably collapsed after decapitation, and the First Order emerged as a dominant faction and reasserted galactic dominance. That, or this is set in an area of the Galaxy under First Order control.

The Rebels are the Resistance now, and the Empire is the First Order now.

This has huge implications for our favourite game!

Is your favorite game The Resistance, too? :o

LOL! (or is that Callooh, Callay!?)

Two new factions . . .

Gods i hate those wings though

Not liking this so much. Things don't get named "first" or "one" until there is a second. Calling something the "first order" implies that there have been additional orders since then, but that text is in the present tense.

Unless maybe the "empire" has moved on in some fashion and these guys are a splinter group trying to get back to the empire's roots?

Or it could be something to do with the Jedi Order or Order of the Siths.

Or they could be using it colloquially in place of "most prominent".

Because the canon at this point in the timeline is terrible?

I'm not very EU knowledgable outside of the Zahn stuff - but we know Order 66 was to kill the Jedi. What was the first Order and could that be somehow related?

BECAUSE IT SUCKED, OKAY?

Flat out dude, it sucked! It just sucked! Just as much as the prequels! Alright? Flat out, it sucked. NOTHING was on par to the Original Trilogy- not even the Thrawn Trilogy, which, while good, still wasn't on par to the OT! And don't get me wrong, neither are the friggin' prequels!

But can we just

Can we just stop acting like the EU was so great? To actually like it you REALLY had to cherry pick it.

I like some of the EU content, and some is actually good. But, I don't mind a different incarnation of canon in the films. I don't understand why people act like their children are being murdered because LF doesn't bless their favorite incarnation of Star Wars as canon. They didn't burn the books, folks.

Nearly. EU stuff is mostly apocrypha now. You might say it's the stuff of legends. ;)

Now, steady. I agree with your general point, but let's not say stuff we can't take back, eh? :P

IIRC Captain Lackwit actually likes the prequels. I think he's trying to make a point, or maybe doing to others what they've done to him and his preferences.

I 'get' why they're doing things differently than in the EU. Still, I think there was nothing wrong with the Heir to the Empire trilogy. If someone wants to point out what was so bad about it, we'd actually have a discussion, rather than why can all-caps the biggest.

For my sake, it's not overwriting the EU stories that has me as annoyed as that they seem to be disregarding the astrocartography of the Essential Atlas. Not so much by overwriting it as in making up new places. As an RPG GM I really like having a sense of where stuff is in relation to other stuff.

Hopefully, the Essential Atlas authors will find where to put the new stuff (incl. Lothal) onto the old map.

Given the sheer amount of red and black tones mixed with the amount of "MUAHAHAHAHA" feel of the new Empire (First Order?) style of things, I have a feeling this trilogy is going to be heavily emphasized on the Sith and Light Side vs. Dark Side themes. Prequels was mainly an origin/how the galaxy ended up this way trilogy, while the OT was about oppression and rebellion. The feeling these trailers are giving me have me more focused on the Good vs. Evil aspect of it all because they've seemed to have styled things to be obviously evil, rather than intimidating like the Galactic Empire.

I get that feeling, too.

And, honestly, it's the only way the story makes sense.

Episode IV-VI ends up feeling like a 'Rebels vs Empire' story.

Once I-III were added in, it changed the entire story arc to be a larger (-ish) Greek tragedy - the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.

Obviously, Episode VII can't continue either of those arcs, because they both resolved. So the only thing that could work is to do the same thing I-III did to IV-VI...re-set the scope of them as part of a larger story, and the only remaining 'larger story' is the Dark Side vs the Light.

Exactly.

This new trilogy is definitely gonna set up a new theme to resolve, and to be honest, I am grateful for that. I think the old characters, such as Luke, Han and Chewie being in the fray are the to just act as remnants of the previous trilogy. Kinda like how Yoda and Obi-Wan played more important roles in the prequels vs. only being influential characters guiding the mains in the OT. I'm excited to see more evil in the galaxy, I'm excited for new TIEs and X's, I'm just excited in general because I'm a fanboy of just about everything Star Wars.

Honestly, the thing I liked the MOST about the prequels (and many hated, but is happening again, so deal with it) is that it threw aside the old story arc as a 'primary focus' and it become just a smaller part of a whole.

The whole 'Empire vs Rebellion' that was the entire WORLD of so many EU authors just became background of a single part of the story of Anakin Skywalker.

I rather expect this new trilogy will do the same thing to that story - the whole 'rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker' being tossed aside as a primary focus, and instead becoming just a piece in the overall story of the climax of the Dark Side vs the Light.

At least, I hope - I like when things get re-calibrated so cleanly (I mean, yeah, Lucas sucks for dialog and casting, but the IDEAS were totally sound for the prequels)

Luke cut two very big heads off the hydra that is the Empire when he took down Darth and co. But I believe this would leave a vacuum. The regional governors Tarkin talks about would no doubt struggle for leadership. We saw this in some of the novels (Stackpole's X-Wing series for example).

After watching this preview, it seems the Empire is still strong (hence the stormies and ties) but new factions are developing (Mr. Revan wannabe and Chrome Trooper - who I think are buds). Revan wannabe might be calling his new faction the 'First Order' whilst the Empire still exists.

Yeah, I was just trying to make a point and I do like The Prequels. But, they aren't as good as RoTJ. I mean, for The Force's sake, The Empire Strikes Back is my #1 Favorite Movie of All Time and it's been that way forever. What the hell else can compare?

I actually liked the Thrawn stuff too, but, I just don't view it anywhere near as good as the OT.

Everything in the prequels is 100% better than most of the EU (save Stackpole, Zahn and Allston), especially anything written by Kevin J Anderson

And I hate the prequels
