New teaser

By Doc, the Weasel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Mind you, its not a trailer for the movie proper but our first official look at what happened to the galaxy after the Death Star II blew up comes to us as . . .a mobile game:

Looks like the Empire didn't completely fall apart when the Emperor died. No, the second in command went “Nothing to see here folks! Move along!"

I think it's clear with the Force Awakens trailer there was a sundering of the Empire but not an outright elimination. The make up of the galaxy and the fractious state of affairs the conclusion the Battle of Endor will definitely be fantastic fodder for RPGing. All manner of former Imperial fiefdoms, Hutt expansion, competing 'true alliance' alliances, sure to be a good time I'm sure.

It all just seems bitter sweet to me. The Alliance didn't save the galaxy as I feel we are led to believe at the end of EP VI. Defeated the reigning Sith Lord sure and destroyed his super weapon, but not much else... Seems anti-climatic. Although probably more realistic that the Empire would survive... I don't know... I just have a bad feeling about this.

^It feels anti-climatic as well as realistic and you have a bad feeling about it.

About the anti-climatic thing or about the realistic thing?

I think it is pretty awesome to see that those that were invested in maintaining their position within the empire would do anything and everything to make it so. It seems like something a dictatorship losing its seclusive would do so that the Moffs, generals and gouvernours can carry on the status quo. It opens up a lot of narrative room and intrigue.

I think this is a perfect point for the Wars to carry on from. Of course there is minor celebration on a lot of worlds only to see it squashed by this afraid of repercusions from the people.

I am pretty certain that if North Korea would lose the last of the Kims Jung's we would not find out for a very long time as well...

I'm actually looking forward to this game. People give a lot of flak towards mobile games, some of it justly, but what platform would reach more people? Almost everyone I know has a smart phone. The few Luddites who do not, wouldn't play the game anyways. As for introducing new canon, it will be far more effective than a book or video game.

I still think that the rebel fleet is all but wiped out during and after Endor. The battle of Endor was about assassinating the duly appointed leader of the Galactic Empire. They succeeded in this. Gathering all their fleet, they struck out and what few forces survived, and went underground forming the resistance. Allowing the lesser evil to lead the empire, while the rebellion goes underground and more subtle as the resistance.

I figure that the First Order will paint Palpatine as a fanatic who waisted people and resources in terrible super weapons. If I was writing the propaganda, I'd do just that. Say that the emperor was killed and that the rebellion was patriots that killed a megolaniac, who went too far in protecting the empire, and that the first order will protect the Galaxy, especially from those who would exert their power to control others, like the Emperor and the Jedi.

That's kind of an odd statement. I don't like my iPhone or iPad for mobile gaming...never had wrist problems until I started using them for games, and the problems went away after I stopped.

I'd play anything along the lines of KOTOR, Jedi Knight series, or a turn-based strategy game like Civilization (Empire at War is too frantic). Jedi Knight especially is the kind of thing you need a big screen and a mouse for...or at least that how I'd prefer to play: upright, with a screen big enough to feel like I'm watching a movie. 1st person shooter has been my fave since "Castle Wolfenstein", which led to Doom. Hunched over a little screen and those crappy controls just isn't as immersive.

I'm not sure what any of that has to do with "Luddite".

About The Force Awakens.

To me, the rebels won at the end of EP VI. Won in the sense of everything. They defeated the Empire. Period. Sidious and Vader represented the Empire and they were destroyed thus the Empire was destroyed symbolically. Why soil that with allowing the Empire to survive?

It is still speculation at this point so I am trying to remain optimistic, hence: "I have a bad feeling about this (the plot/background/history/story of The Force Awakens)".

(And I am stream of consciousness writing, not trying to be formal)

I used the term Luddite in jest. There are people that don't like technology they use just the minimum to get by. They wouldn't play the game anyways was the point.

Some people don't like mobile games, true. Mobile games are for the casual gamer, not the "hardcore". The former is a far larger audience than the latter.

Mobile devices have made games more accessible to people who don't consider themselves gamers.

Personally I hope there is never a game like KotOR again. Worst games I have ever played. My hate for those games stems from a few games that I played that put the bar *really* high for RPG's. KotOR's story I found predictable and uninspired, but the most grievous part of the game was that you just went around grinding for better lightsaber parts. If you didn't make a combat focused character, you would lose the game. Much of that stems from using WotC's rules for their RPG, which was all about combat.

Now, I'm sure that this new game will not be anything game breaking either. It is going to to be really simple. At this point I want it to be pretty and fill in a few gaps in the lore.

We're done here.

The interviews with the people from Kabam who are involved in the game indicate that Disney/Lucasfilm is keeping a really tight rein on things this time, so it shouldn’t be too excessively bad in that regard.

It should be pretty, given that the people involved hail from TOR, Diablo, etc…. The game itself has been described as a mix between Diablo for the combat stuff and TOR for the non-combat stuff, but with plenty of grinding — although you’re more than welcome to spend in-game money if you want to buy your way to the top.

They claim that they have fixed the “bad” aspects of free-to-play that everyone hates, but I don’t see any real sign of that.

Meh.

Democracy didn't serve the galaxy very well and dictatorship proved worse.

Maybe it's high time for the galaxy to try balkanization with each system or region picking their own governments, their own regulations, their own allies, their own objectives, and their own enemies.

(That makes me sound suspiciously like a Separatist, doesn't it?)
