People complain that the Tie fighters have not changed. The US Air force still uses bombers from the 50's and fighters designed in the 70's.
New TIE Fighters!
The auxiliary firing arc would make a lot of sense.
It has great movie potential (imagine in one of the first space battles, a tie swarm jousting some X-wings, then the T-fighters fly on and shoot the X-wings to smithereens when they reverse the lasers), it also seems like a good 'evolution' on an iconic ship.
And for us players of the miniatures board game, it would offer new tactics.
The new shuttle and troop transport don't entice me that though. Hope we get to see some more (new) ships soon!

Almost sure it's shooting backwards. The other Ties in the teaser have the regular cannons in the usual positions.
You can also make out the other ships in the background, they do look like troop transports (the one on the left has the hatch open).
Solved. This TIE is not shooting backwards. It's a different model, and that's probably the front of it. You can see its viewport. Probably a prototype, some sort of heavy TIE, or maybe the big bad's personal fighter.
The proof? Look at the wings. See the massive cog things?
The normal TIEs don't have them.

It looks more to me that it is a modified TIE, with a thin slit of a viewport instead of the large round/octagonal one. Maybe a hero's personal craft?
Edit: Ninja'd

That is the front of a TIE with a chin mounted turret. I like the new viewport it has! Are the new tubes on the side missile launchers?
There seems to be 3 types of TIE's shown. At 1:12, we have a standard TIE with a repaint, we have this thicker, beefier one, with a chin gun, and the good old classic one.
Maybe some sort of TIE/gt ?

Right you are! So now we've got more TIE variants. Some sort of heavy fighter.
Edited by UnfairBananaIt definitely looks like the back of the ship from this concept art which was leaked at some point. Quite unlikely for a ship to crash land backwards...
Auxiliary arc confirmed!
edit: Solved! but the other way around
edit2: You can see the turret leaving a mark in the sand.
edit3: Yes I can now see the cogs, it's a different TIE model, but it's still backwards.

It could've been spinning around, the way TIEs do when they're shot down
Perhaps it's the Chrometrooper's personal TIE Fighter. Whatever it is, it's shooting up all the stormtroopers and normal TIE Fighters.
chilligan makes a very good point. It probably is shooting backwards, which would be the whole point of that swivel turret.
It's still a different model though. No rear arc TIEs as standard.

Probably because some Rebel scum nicked it.
Edited by TIE PilotI say we can't call it until the movie comes out. All this "evidence" is just mere guessing.

Yeah, I agree, it's definitely a bit of an upgraded TIE - the engine exhaust ports are definitely buffed up a lot, and there are those big cogs on the inside of the wings.
But it can shoot backwards... ;-)
In this official artwork image, we see the "clanky" TIE's with little turrets underneath.
They've got the cogs too. Probably the heavy version then.
Now we know what it looks like from the front.
thats what I meant by 'clanky'.
I'm happy the TIEs aren't short stubby little guys.
I really want to invert my avatar now...

SWR's stubby TIEs and long necked ISDs are stylisation, not "canonical" appearances.

The "stubby" TIE was somewhat the original concept, as shown in Ralph McQuarrie's artwork.

Actually I thought Rebels is cannon so the ships must be too.

That does seem to settle it, especially in combination with the 'crashed TIE' pic - from the front, they look largely like regular TIEs, aside from the cogs, beefed up back, and turret hanging down underneath it.
All i see are changes for the sake of changes, i'm even more worried now than before.
Yeah, cause Ford Mustangs have changed WAY less in about that same time period!

And Rebels is produced in the style of RMQ concept art. That's why the TIEs are stubby. Be prepared for bubble turrets on spindly Y-wings. You won't get half moon X-wings though because 7's nicked those.

Canon. Rebels is canon, but the art style isn't, that's just the presentation of it. Lothal isn't a CGI world.

Wouldn't know cars are a bit nerdy for me.
