The WH40K Forums Are Revolting

...in the wake of the leaks/news surrounding the upcoming Codex Eldar: Craftworlds.

I'm a (former) 40K player myself, and Eldar were one of my first and favourite armies, ever since the Aspect Warriors first became a thing. So I was eagerly looking forward to seeing what GW delivered.

Judging from the reaction across the tinterwebs however, I might give it a miss. I haven't played 40K myself in this latest edition - my last game was probably something like 18 months ago, so I don't really have much context when it comes to the rumours, but on every forum I've checked (Dakka Dakka, Warseer, Bell of Lost Souls, Bolter & Chainsword etc) the players appear to be in almost total horror.

There's talk about the above codex being blanket banned from competitive events and/or from friendly play before it's even been released .

Has anyone been following the rumours/updates? Any thoughts?

Eldar are already one of the top two armies, so it's not like they need any more help. Haven't checked the rumors lately myself, since Eldar don't interest me at all, but I'll browse Faeit a little bit later to see what all the fuss is about.

The main grievances that I can tell are so far:

Eldar gain access to ranged Destroyer weapons (weapons with the Distort special rule are now apparently Destroyer weapons)

Eldar Jetbikes can now apparently ALL equip either shuriken cannons or scatter lasers, instead of one-in-three as previous.

Like I said, I haven't played in over 18 months (and I've never played with Destroyer weapon rules), so I have no idea how this fits in to the current range, but it appears that GW are taking what is already considered a powerful codex and buffing it rather than nerfing it, with the end result being that players across the forums going into meltdown.

I checked it out. GW isn't worthy of much faith these days, but I strongly suspect there's more to it than simply "here's some D-weapons for your infantry, go have fun." From what I've seen, the change is going to be functionally similar to what distortion weapons already do, with various corner cases being either better or worse, depending.

It's a company in decline that does not listen to its customers they are totally lost and showing no sign of recovery.

I played necrons but their latest codex is too strong and I can't imagine it would be fun for friends to fight.

Their sole goal now is selling overcosted models to an ever diminishing player base, they don't care about game balance so will give stupid stats to a kit just to sell it.

Eldar were already a top teir army they did not need further buffs.

Necrons are really well balanced now (minus the unplayable C'tan, perhaps). Their rules got cleaned up quite a bit, but they're no longer spammable like they were before, which is a mark against them at the competitive level. Still not a top tier army, and not likely to be one in the foreseeable future.

Of course, those two (semi-confirmed, given they're taken from White Dwarf) rumours seem like the sum total of knowledge of the new Codex so far. It will be interesting to see what else (if anything) changes, and what the reactions are.

At the moment though, knees are jerking so hard they're hitting their owner's chins.

As far as I can tell (yep, I'm an ex-player too), 40k doesn't have tiers any more. 6th ed killed the game for me, not even looked at 7th.

It's just a mess from what I see.

Glad I'm out. Need to find oldhammer groups now (which shouldn't be too hard given that I live just outside Nottingham, but I'm too busy playing X Wing!)

"You said it, they stink on ice."

Did they finally resculpt all the second ed models still in the range?

Did they finally resculpt all the second ed models still in the range?

Pretty much. They've replaced the old Easy Rider Jetbikes with the new MotoGP Jes Goodwin Jetbikes... you know, the ones which were first displayed as a preview model about 8 years ago.

Oh wait - sorry, they still have the old Warp Spider sculpts. So no, no they haven't.

Good, that saves me the cost of a codex.

I'm with you on the jetbike pilot, bout time they changed that. Not sure they need new warpspider models.

On the codex: Sigh, with the recent killer clowns from outer spa- err I mean Harlequins codex, I had hopes we might get an exodite codex...

On the ranged weapons: Fluffwise those wraith guard D cannons are suposed to suck things into the warp, so it would make sense that thay are D weaposn now. On the other hand, the fact that we now need D weapons in non-apocalypse games...That's some power creep. Is it just me or are the guns getting scarier in the later codexes?

I hope we get some new aspect warriors.

five minutes of reading BOLS and now I remember why I spend all my time on the FFG forums.

Man, and I thought there were some BS capabilities back in 5th ed! Glad I bailed back then...

You had more sense than me i stuck around for 6th in denial, 7th was the end for me pure cash grab edition.

I bailed when they released 7th, it just seemed so unnecessary. So they're releasing yet another eldar related codex? Someone on the design team must really like eldar.

Know who desperately need a new codex chaos, the first in 6th and consistently one of the worst but no Eldar get a new codex that buffs them further.

So is Matt Ward into Eldar now?

They've just had one: Khorne Daemonkin. Buy an Axe of Khorne, get a FREE Bloodthirster.

Gecko, that's actually in the codex: Kohrlath, axe of Ruin: if the bearer dies you get a free bloodthirster (that takes automatic damage each turn) and it's kinda in keeping with some of the old stuff from Slaves to Darkness.

Also they made the Lord of skulls cost exactly 888 points. Cute.

I wonder how well fielding 8 bloodthirsters (2000 pts) would work. :)

Banning things from friendly play is insane IMO. Even banning things from tournaments before they have been out and used in tournaments for a while seems crazy to me though.

I used to play 40k and Fantasy years back. Then I went to a trade show and that company is simply fan unfriendly. I quit playing all their games that weekend. I would not support them until FFG starting putting out stuff in their universe. I am fine giving them money through a creative license as long as someone else makes the game and sells it. The worlds they wrote are awesome.

There's nothing new under the Solar Auxilia, as they say. Forge World stuff has been broken for the longest time, they might as well heap on new codex releases while they're at it.

When I first heard about supplements I thought it would be a great way to do different imperial guard regiments and chaos legions and stuff the already existed in fluff, it seems like most of the supplements are stuff they made up like Clan Raukaan, and the Imperial Fist one and Crimson Slaughter, and there seems to be a lot of MEQs and Eldar.
