When a ship hits an asteroid the rules state that an overlapping ship receives 1 faceup damage card.
Does this apply if you have shields, or does this get absorbed by the shields?

When an ability talks about dealing cards and not "suffering damage" the damage is applied to the ship's hull and bypasses shields.
just think about the Empire Strikes back when the Star Destroyers are searching for the falcon and going through the field
remember in the establishing shot how one rock just straight up smashed through the bridge of one?
that's what's happening in Armada, shields or no ![]()
Are asteroids considered an ability? The text says "...receives 1 faceup damage card " not dealt or suffers.. ambiguous ffg at their best
seems to be their own rule
the "receives" keyword is probably intended so that you have to pay a hefty cost for moving through them even if you have something that normally blocks critical damage (so if something like X-wing's chewbacca ran over an armada asteroid, his ability that triggers on being dealt face-up damage would not resolve)
Not ambiguous at all. It says deal a face up damage card. So deal a face up damage card.
Its even worse if you are facing Dodanna and the Reb player chooses which of 4 cards he gives you ![]()

It doesn't work like that. Unless you're talking about something other than asteroids.
Dodanna only comes into play when a Rebel Ship is doing damage via an attack, not whenever a ship takes damage. So the rebel player couldn't pick 4 cards if a VSD runs into an asteroid field.

I don't see any reason why Dodonna wouldn't work like that. His text just says "Before an enemy ship is dealt a faceup damage card," and nothing about being attacked.
Dondonna makes no mention of the source of the damage. He simply says whenever an enemy ship would be dealt a face-up damage card.
This has come up repeatedly. The previewed version of Dondonna has a different text then the actual card.

Very well I stand corrected then. ![]()

"When a friendly ship is attacking, before the defender is dealt a faceup damage card, look at the top 4 cards of the damage deck, place 1 on top of the deck and discard the others."
This seems to make more sense but if the actual card make no mention then it seems good to me.
Most likely will be errata/FAQ later but until then go nuts!!!
Edited by skyhwk290The Wiki is incorrect. That is not the text on the card we all received in the Core Set.
Any place that isn't the text box of the card is not going to be necessarily accurate and shouldn't be used for supporting rules arguments.

I must say that makes Dodonna a lot more powerful than is typical of FFG cards. I didn't even bother looking it up, because in X-Wing everything is based on the damage done by the attacker.
I'll take that as a lesion to make sure I check the cards next time before I say someone else is wrong. ![]()

Yea, all of the fleet commanders are inherently very powerful in this game. Typically their abilities have a wide area of effect and can be used multiple times per round. There really isn't an upgrade type in X-Wing that is analogue to them.
I don't have the card infront of me but most of the places I can find it (wiki page and fab's builder) have it below.I don't see any reason why Dodonna wouldn't work like that. What reason do you have to believe this requires an Errata/FAQ entry that will change the ability?
The only time during our several games Doddo's effect has taken place is when ships suffer asteroid damage ![]()
