SD vs shield upgrade on a rookie x wing

By LukesandLadders06, in X-Wing

Easy question. If you could get one for free on the rookie, What would you choose?

Shield upgrade, no question with two evade dice.

Using Major Juggler's houserule fix (-3 modification cost), this is a free hull or one point shield, or perhaps more interestingly an Experimental interface and one of the lesser-used Astromechs.

If the upgrade is coming along for free, the answer is definitely the Shield Upgrade.

If you're paying for the upgrade, though, the answer is "neither". The actual problem with the X-wing's stat line is between 1 and 2 points. That also happens to be the approximate value of an extra hit point on a ship with 2 Agility. But if you pay full price for a Hull Upgrade or Shield Upgrade, the X-wing actually gets less efficient.

Shield is on my mind as well. Since they just want to get in the thick of it.

SD on a two dice ship may very well disappear without ever getting you an evade, shield upgrade is a 100% sure thing.

But pray tell why are you putting either on a rookie x-wing?

Because It's free. Haha!

shield

not even a question

it's like a green die that actually works!

I sure am glad you're here. Sometimes I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read suggested discounts on ships.

Why is SD abbreviated, but Shield Upgrade spelled out? I eventually figured out that SD meant Stealth Device, but I guess I'm just too new to readily understand all of the abbreviations.

I REALLY like it when people not only spell out the card, but include what it does so I don't have to go look it up. It does make things much clearer.

Yup!

The actual problem with the X-wing's stat line is between 1 and 2 points.

For the generics it's even more like 2-3 points!

That also happens to be the approximate value of an extra hit point on a ship with 2 Agility.

That depends on a lot of factors, but yeah for a generic X-wing it's worth about 1.6 points.

But if you pay full price for a Hull Upgrade or Shield Upgrade, the X-wing actually gets less efficient.

Yup, which is why nobody does it!

you have to shop smart

save on your shield upgrade by shopping at B-mart

we have deals deals deals so many deals, it's crazy!

Order now and receive a 75% discount! Buy one, get two free! We'll also include a barrel-roll and a variety of useful upgrade slots, for no additional charge!

side effects include slowness, stiffness, a tendency to cling to other models, loss of the astromech slot, an a severe lack of O.T cred. We all know B-wings were in RoTJ at the beginning of the battle above Endor, but **** I don't think we saw a single one firing!

For 4 points I would put R2-D2. I love running R2 on a rookie. It puts your opponent in a position where they have a really annoying ship to deal with. Should they attack the low skill rookie that can heal or go for a bigger threat and leave the rookie for later when he gets more dangerous due to R2.

Riffing on the theme here... When is Stealth Device EVER a good buy? Seems like even on 3 agility ships, it gets stripped in the first round of combat. At least in my experience.

SD is good on autoceptors that's about it.

In order to make a shield upgrade efficient you need a way to restore lost shield tokens.

However while 3 agility is good it is not if the first hit you take reduces the agility back to 2.

4 agility is great but going down to 3 is not as bad.

it's amazing on Soontir and...and...

yeah just Soontir

four agility backed by thrusters + focus + evade (+maybe another focus) is a fairly solid bulwark, as far as green dice go

naked four agility is like playing that game where you have to put your hand on a table and jab a knife in the space between your fingers, only instead of jabbing a knife you're waiting for a butcher's cleaver to fall on your hand and hoping it misses your favorite digits

mind you, even Soontir has his off days

I played a game where hotshot N'dru was not benefiting from his ability and did not have Soontir in arc. N'dru's hot shot was the only thing that could shoot Soontir, and it didn't have a prayer. Still, wisely fearing the green dice's devious nature, I turtled up. He rolls a perfect 3 hits, I roll a perfect four blanks and SD went poof as if it had never truly existed.

Soontir takes a direct hit and is saved only by the guaranteed evade and thrusters.

I made sure he never ever took a shot again <_< (fortunately, hotshot was the only turret. Wish they were all one-shot)

OK shield it is Thanks guys lol

In addition to Soontir, I also really like Stealth Device on a Lone Wolf TIE Defender.

I played against a list recently that ran x-wing rookies with HU. Made the ship surprisingly more durable. It's not the fix that the x-wing needs (as I'd still rather spend 1 more point to get a B-wing) but it did help.

I'll take SD on a 2 agility ship if that ship is taking Recon Spec as well. Specially if it has a way to focus/evade. The [generic] firespray is not totally against it's use.
