TIE Automated, or TIE Droid

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

Ok,

I know we have visited this in other threads, but here is where I think we can see a really cool Imperial thing happen.

1) TIE Droids, sold in a 3 pack like Most Wanted

2) Give them Obsidian stat lines across the board

3) They will have no upgrade slots

4) Pilot ability: when any other ship with the TIE Automated title performs an action, you may choose to perform the same action.

explanation: if 1 focuses, it may focus, it may perform a target lock, if 1 boosts, it may boost. but still limited to 1 of any action each turn.

5) action bar: focus, evade, barrel roll, boost

6) Title: Hive mind = at the start of the combat phase you may discard a focus token if you within range 1-2 of another ship with this title. If another ship with this title is within range 1-2 and is destroyed, place a stress token on this ship.

what do you guys think the points for these buggers would be, or do you think this is to OP?

Hive mind would be interesting if you had to put it on a control ship. It could be placed face down or under your ship cards. Your enemy wouldn't know which ship it was but once that ship was destroyed you lose the pilot ability you mentioned.

I think they should be PS0, except for the named specific droids with certain abilities. And the title should give them +1 PS for each other TIE Droid on the field.

Also, the standard TD is six points.

At first I was like D:

And then like :D

But then like D: again

I disagreed with the whole 0-pilot-skill-because-I'm-a-droid-racist, but then the +1 made it interesting.

Also I don't see why we need named droid pilots. We've seen a ship with no generics, why not one with no uniques?

However, imagine flying 8 of them. A PS8 swarm? Holy balls, man. There's gotta be a cap on that.

well, remember IG-88 was a droid and he has a PS of 6

also, I am thinking that there are no named pilots, they are all the same. just drones, so I could see a PS = 0 or 1, but could you imagine 4 ships on the board that could all technically focus, evade, boost, and barrel roll in the same turn?

that would be interesting to say the least. I would think the points would be around 15-18

Since they are so small (6 meters, if I recall correctly), I was thinking TIE Droids (or the thematically similar Shadow Droids) would work well as 3 mounted on a single base, not unlike a fighter squadron in Armada.

TIE fighter is 6.3m

TIE droid is 6.1m

Generally an interesting idea. Unfortunately, post Clone Wars there is a strict anti combat droid mind set through out the universe. IG-88 and Guri are very unique exceptions to this generally accepted law. As such, legitimate militaries during this time period did not use or openly develop combat droids.

IG-88, developed pre-Clone Wars and takes on a life all its own which allows it to avoid, at least for some time, being destroyed or reprogrammed despite anti combat droid mentalities. Guri, was developed secretly and with great expense for Prince Xezor to act as a body guard. Her humanoid appearance and secret design allow her to move freely without suspicion that she is a droid.

So, generally an interesting idea, but a theme that would not work with in the Star Wars universe. That said, EU is changing.

these were developed during the dark empire series when the clone of the emperor had risen.

the world devastators built them

Yeah, as Kiloden said, these ships were developed by the Empire in the Dark Empire comic book series and also made appearances in missions in Rogue Squadron for N64.

The square winged droid TIE fighter is from the same source as the E-wing.

The idea of making it PS0 is so that it would be 11 points, so a player would be able to take a 9-ship swarm with them. However, the title would offer +1 PS for every TIE Droid you control for 1 point, so you won't be able to heavily swarm with them, but not all of them have to have the title so you'd be getting PS8 droids at the most. Of course, this would make Academy TIEs obsolete and turn Howlrunner Swarms into Howlrunner Droid Swarms, Mini Swarms accompanying Phantoms/Decimators would be at PS4-5 depending on how many you decide to take. The only way I can see it being fair is if you make it's hull and agility value 2 and let it keep its boost action.

You would need a command ship / upgrade. They are inferior to human pilots but could benefit from IG-2000 type title "hive mind" control. No EPT but spec out like a tie generic. Wikia states it has heavier armor if that affects pt cost.

I like the control ship idea,

lets make it interesting and make it a crew upgrade:

Crew upgrade: Droid Controller (2pts) = allows TIE droids to have the Hive mind title card.

this way you have to have a big ship to eat up points so there isn't a giant swarm of the nasty buggers

Another idea I had was to make the ps of the droids outside of control range variable as well based on the average PS of the enemy ships remaining. This could represent the idea of the droids being programmed to react to their enemies. This would also bring up new interesting tactical choices as if you focus down a high PS enemy early on, your own ships lose PS.

What are we thinking as far as stat line? Do you still want it to be Obsidian stats?

Also as far as the pilot ability goes, I like the idea, but it might be a bit OP. Maybe just give them all a free action of whatever action the control ship does?
