New Player, List Suggestions

By Roller, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi folks, recently started playing X-wing and after having a blast playing with friends have decided to enter my first tournament. Been playing around with a list that I'm comfortable with and have come up with the following:

Turr Phennir

Veteran Instincts

Stealth Device

Bounty Hunter

Seismic Charges

Academy TIE x 3

I've had a little success running this list but only been flying it against friends who, like me are relatively inexperienced so I'd welcome any thoughts you guys have on it.

While there are plenty of changes that could be made I'll say that if you are comfortable flying that and know how it should do great.

I guess if there is one 'simple' change that could be made you could add the Autothruster to Turr using the Royal Guard title instead of keeping the bomb.

For tournament play follow this advice:

1) Play what you know. You'll be more comfortable flying it and won't miss synergies because you tried using a net-list for the first time. Skilled players with unknown lists often outplay novice players with winning lists.

2) When planning a maneuver - Choose a maneuver you know will clear and not one you think will clear. If a 2 turn looks like it could clear, a 3 turn definately will.

3) Learn. There will be squad compositions that you have never seen before so adapt to how they play. A-wing squads fly much differently than pancake squads which fly differntly than 2 agressors. If you make the cut to the top then you'll most likely face a list you have played before.

4) Fly Casual: this means have fun whether you win or lose and make sure your opponent does to.

Thanks for the replies folks, managed to scrounge up an autothruster card so I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

Looking to just enjoy the tournament as I expect to get mauled by the more experienced players. Setting myself little goals for the day such as destroying at least 1 enemy ship per game. Interested to see what lists will be used on the day.

I can tell you this for sure, don't fall into the trap of always trying a new list, its best to stick with a simple list that has good synergy and stick with it even if it looses, learning position is key, make sure your move leaves you with a place to fly the following turn.

If you have trouble and really want to try a learning list this one is known to be good for learning, play it with your friends untill you know it well before trying it in a tourney.

REBEL Jan Ors and 2 Bs+HLC (99)

Jan Ors — HWK-290 25
Swarm Tactics 2 Blaster Turret 4
Recon Specialist 3 Moldy Crow 3

Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Fire-Control System 2 Heavy Laser Cannon 7

Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Fire-Control System 2 Heavy Laser Cannon 7

Good luck and have fun, expect good players to have the upper hand and don't let that discourage you, remember to still be fun to others if you lose, other players will be very good to a new guy with a good attitude.

OP, i think your list is pretty solid. I do agree with the suggestion to use autothrusters instead of the bomb. The key to success will be using those academy TIEs for blocking so you can maximize shots with your remaining TIEs & bounty hunter, and perhaps limit enemy shots on your damaged TIEs to help them live a little longer. Also, fly very cautiously with Turr. He doesn't need to be shooting every turn for your list to do well. He's your closer and he will do you little good if he dies early.

Good luck and have fun!

I like using PTL on Turr for after he shoots. That way he shoots and then gets out of firing arcs with a boost and barrel roll. Then again, play with what you know.

Might I also suggest trying a Recon Specialist on a Firespray? I read on these forums how it's great to get the 2 Focus for that ship. It can be used for offense and defense pretty well. I have applied it to good effect and seen it used well. The Firespray gets the 2 green dice and can use the Focus.

I like seismic on a firespray, bombs missiles rockets and torpedoes just don't pay off in the long run due to the cost of a one shot attack, for two more points you could add a Mangler Cannon and use it every round

I only use bombs at home with friends

After going back through the replies and having a good old think, I tweaked my list a little bit at the weekend to play a couple of friendly games:

Turr Phennir

Veteran Instincts

Royal Guard TIE

Stealth Device

Autothrusters

Krassis Trelix

Ion Cannon

Recon Specialist

Obsidian Squadron Pilot x 2

99pts

Won both games which came as a pleasant surprise. :)

Having the ion cannon on Krassis seemed to work quite well in allowing me to isolate ships and put some damage on them with the two TIE's while Turr buzzed around the flanks and was generally a pain for my opponents to deal with until he came in during the endgame to close the game out.

Might keep using this list for the upcoming tournament. Decisions, decisions...

Well I entered the Scottish Regionals at Common Ground Games in Stirling this past weekend. Ran the above list but swapped out the Ion cannon on Krassis for a mangler.

42 players in total and after six rounds I managed to finish with a record of 2-4 and avoided coming last! Quite pleased with that as I was worried about going up against experienced players seeing as I'm quite new to the game and don't have many competitive games under my belt. Had a couple of lists that I had problems getting to grips with but after chatting to the guys playing them I can see what I should have done instead.

Flew reasonably well for the most part although I did assign the wrong dials to my Obsidians in one match and promptly flew one straight into an asteroid. Must remember to double check before I place the dials.

Good experience and played in a friendly environment, got plenty of advice for future tournaments.

Big thanks to Steve for hosting the tournament and for the cakes handed out for the stores second birthday! :)
