Adding more than 4 players??

By Istivan, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello, i just started playing descent with my buddies and we have a large group, usually 6 or 7 of us, is there or does anyone have any fast/good rules for adding more than 4 adventurers to descent? Any help would be great.

Short answer, no. This question has come up many times before, and the fact is that the scaling doesn't even work for the 2-4 heroes range it supposedly covers. Adding another hero slants things quite noticably in the heroes' favor, mostly due simply to having more actions, but also due to LOS coverage, treasure distribution, and a number of other things. It's easy to reverse-engineer the scaling formulas they used and calculate the values for 5 heroes, but since the formulas they used fundamentally don't work, it's fairly pointless.

There are, of course, lots of things you can arbitrarily change to make things harder for the heroes. You can take away coins or conquest or skills, you can give the overlord more threat or more cards, you can increase the number of monsters or their stats. But none of these things will actually make the game work in the same way as if you had used fewer heroes; you'll fundamentally change the tactics and strategy, and if you manage to get the overall win rate close to 50%, it will be fairly impressive.

I am currently finishing up a major overhaul to Descent, called The Enduring Evil , which completely rebalances the monsters, quests, and cards. I believe I've gotten the scaling to work much better--monsters take multiple hits to kill (and more hits with more heroes), the game doesn't revolve so much around spawning, and the skill and treasure decks are more consistent in power. It's not fast or simple--it's not compatible with the official quests, and requires you print out not just new monster stats, but hundreds of new cards. It also works better if you already have expansions. But it does include rules for 5 heroes that seem to work reasonably well in my limited testing so far, and you could maybe even push it up to 6 heroes if you wanted (though the scaling is definitely still not perfect and a breaking point exists, somewhere). If all goes well, I think I'll be ready to post it for public use in a few weeks.

*poke poke* out with it already, you've been saying "in a few weeks" for quite a while now gui%C3%B1o.gif

to the OP: I don't recall seeing any variant that looked promising at all, so i guess you're better off sticking with 4 heroes. prolly use descent when not all are showing up?

Have I? I don't specifically recall making any public estimates until the last week or two, but it's possible I slipped up. Back when I first started, I had naively hoped I might be done back in February. But my playtest group is actively playing the final quest of the campaign now, so I think my estimate's a little more accurate this time.

well i couldn't swear you literally said "in a few weeks", you most likely used more loose terms like "soon" or the like gui%C3%B1o.gif . either way, i know it's better to do stuff thorough than quickly.
