NOVA Squadron Radio – Episode 22 “Wave 5!”

By EvilEd209, in X-Wing

While I can appreciate the desire to keep a good thing under wraps, there really aren't so many permutations of pilots and (good) EPTs that someone, somewhere hasn't tried it (or thought of it) already. I was glad someone else had the same idea I did and thought it might be good to fly. I don't think you did anyone a disservice by leaving that stuff in.

We aim to please my friend!

Nice show guys, a lot of good stuff covered. Nice to hear Doug and Sean on the cast again. Doug's Yin and Yang build is really cool, and I'm probably going to steal it and play it at my LGS.

I was thinking the same! I really need to get more time in flying Scum!

I have to agree with MJ about Ruthlessness. I don't see it. If Vader can't spend his TL then he needs something with better offensive punch.

It's one of the problems I have with Predator. It's so good for 3 points, that it completely outshines so many 3 and 4 point EPTs in both efficiency and flexibility. At the time it was released, I think it was designed to be an anti-mook card, that possible re-roll of 2 dice was basically as good as a free Target Lock. The problem is the single re-roll default ability is still so good. I think it could have been made sort of like Flight Instructor for offense, maybe you get 2 re-rolls of any kind against =<PS2, or 2 re-rolls of eyes against >PS2. It would be sort of a free action for offense, but it wouldn't double up with Focus except against low PS stuff. This makes raw offense cards like Opportunist have more of a niche. Oh well, this is pretty pointless discussion, the card's not going anywhere, and I use it as much as anyone.

I was thinking the same thing about Lone Wolf, however I think that because it is unique that sort of balances it out some. But yes, Predator is easily one of the best upgrades in the game, a staple similar to PTL.

I agree after actually playing Lone Wolf (I thought it was mind-blowing when it first came out, now I think it's merely very good). It's duty cycle is often not all that high, so it's up to good play to make the most out of it. Predator is just always amazing. Even PTL has a downside and limits on which ships use it well. If it was 4 points do you think people would still take it in the same numbers? 5 points? It would be nice for there to be some benefit for taking more tricky EPTs over Predator.

Yeah, and that leads into a fairly good point actually... there are some stock standard upgrades competitively now, things like PTL, Predator, Engine Upgrade that dominate the field...and the gap between these clearly superior upgrades and the next tier down to just the good ones is pretty wide! Let alone the 'back of the book' ones that almost no one ever runs outside of casual games. I wouldn't mind seeing some upgrades to challenge these guys and make you question which one is best for this ship or that.

I'll run the numbers on it later.

Yeah, I didn't really understand why Ruthlessness was such a great Vader combo. It will work basically the same as it does on some current pilots that are likely to hit (Chiraneau being an example). I don't get why it is good for Vader specifically.

And I'll never understand why more people don't see Oicunn the way I do. Don't try to use his ability at all. He's the cheap EPT pilot for the VT-49, but most importantly, people never ever try to block him. Do you like to have little buzzflies blocking your big ships? I don't. Combined with the Isaard PtL combo, he can get some of the maneuverability of the Higher-PS Decimators, at less cost and almost never losing actions to getting blocked. Pretty sweet if you ask me.
