Resolving an Attack

By KennedyHawk2, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

We've had a lot of trouble in skirmish lately determining the resolution of an attack.

For reference we are using the flowchart from iacommand

A.1 Declare Target

A.2 Both players roll dice simaltaneously

A.3 Reroll dice if able (attacker then defender)

A.4 Apply Modifiers

A.5 Spend Surges

A.6 Check Accuracy

A.7 Calculate Damage.

The trouble we have is communicating all of this after a roll. Often the defender rolls and just says "How much do you do" while the attack scrambles through a bunch of mental math.

This leads to a lot of static bonuses to defense (or offense) being missed as only one player ends up involved in the process.

How do most people deal with this? In a game like heroclix the attacker would state the attack damage and the defender would apply defense modifiers but it seems with surges this becomes more complicated.

The best method we've come up with is:

1.) Both players roll dice

2.) Attacker declares his attack and surge total (including static modifiers)

3.) Defender declares his attack and surge total (including static modifiers)

4.) Attacker has option to re-roll dice if applicable

5.) Defender has option to re-roll dice if applicable

6.) Attacker chooses how to spend surges and restates new attack value and defense value - pierce

7.) Attacker checks accuracy

8.) Attacker deals damage to defending unit (and possibly conditions to defending unit).

The big problem is communication, we often don't know if the attacker says "I deal 5 damage" meaning they deal 5 damage after apply the defense or before.

Whats everyone's preferred method of calculating out damage?

For reference:

Your method seems pretty close to what we tend to do. The dice should be right there to verify if its accurate or not. Adding the pierce value in your #8 example may be helpful for the defender as well.

I do attacker states pre surge totals.

Defender states pre surge totals.

I usually sum at this point.

I roll 5 hits and a surge.

Okay I rolled 2 blocks

So 3 and a surge. I spend it on pierce 2 and you take 5.

In both campaigns and skirmish, we roll the attacker and defender dice at the same time (as per the rules), and then make the attacker do all the math while the defender watches since the defender has fewer choices to make than the attacker does.
