Has anyone put LEDs in a YT-2400?

By Klutz, in X-Wing

I'm curious if anyone has put lights inside their YT-2400?

I'm thinking of trying it out. The electronics side of things shouldn't be a problem. What scares me is the whole "cutting up the model to open it up" part.

Does anyone have tips as to how best to open up the model?

I'd talk to the guy who did the custom 2400, he might have some information there. I know he did a lot of add ons but maybe he pulled it apart

Klutz, if you're still interested in doing this (but haven't started yet), I'll go ahead and share with you what my battle plan for doing the YT-2400, if I ever get around to it. And of course without actually doing any of it, there's no guarantee that it'll work.

But basically, my thoughts are:

1) Using a dremel, cut away the engine area, and only the engine area

2) Using 2 CR2020 batteries and holders, create a small circuit consisting of 1 Blue LED

a. I don't think the batteries will stack in any direction, so I would make the wires on one of them long such that it would be inserted first, and the second one relatively short - pretty much attached to the LED

b. The second one might have to be adjusted a bit in order to provide a bit of a "bench" for the LED to be supported by. I'd suggest using solid core wire from it to the LED, but not for the first battery.

3) Create a 5 sided diffuser (my previous one was out of a milk carton). This will slide in place with the four edges holding pressure on the relatively deep engine area and it will cover up the inners, while also being easily removable for electrical service and turning on/off.

Sadly, at the rate I'm going, and the rate FFG is releasing ships, I'll never get around to doing this myself. But basically my goal on the YT-2400 is to make it as minimally invasive as possible, and I think it's doable. Worst case you may have to setup a magnet or two to hold things in place inside the hull.

No, I haven't started anything for this project.

Your plan would be to have the whole thing slide in through the engine hole?

Would you have some kind of on/off switch?

That's correct. The battery trays I use have on/off switches.

When I did my falcon I had the battery in the base and raised the base slightly, them used brass rod and a headphone jack and socket, So when in its on when its not on base it's off, it also held it on base tight, it then left all the internal space for the led's and fibre optics, I plan on doing one for the new YT as a scum looted ship, but generally speaking they pry apart nicely by design on their large ships as they are all hollow
