5 Headhunters?

By Tsiegtiez, in X-Wing

Five Headhunters, sixty points, two possible factions. Scum get to staple on Illicit goodness like Feedbacks if they want, but Rebels have that PS shooting advantage (and still get to block every named pilot ever). Is it worth it? It's the definitive mini-swarm, and those two shields go a long way if you don't get one-shot by Soontir Fel and his ace buddies.

What do you bring with it? Is it worth trying to bring a single 40-point ship alongside it? Do you reach for an ace, or a tank? Both in the same package? What does that pile of pointy Pirates (or Bandits) look like to you when you set it down, or have it set down across from you?

I like 5 Z-95's with Assualt missles. Huge alpha strike ability.

I play a rebel 6 Z95 swarm sometimes

4 bandits led by Airen and Blount.

I *think* i have swarm tactics on both 'heros' and blount gets assault missiles.

From memory thats a 99 point list and it does ok.

You have massive flexibility with being able to bump up two bandits from 2 to 8 and 6 pS (or if you need to bump up blount to 8) and blounts 'auto hit' assault missile really evens out swarms early on.

Xizor (predator, thrusters)

5 pirates (two with feedback array)

great fun if you can fly Zs. I've tried it and have had huge issues getting around their lack of mobility, but having an essentially immortal Xizor help out is great (until you roll 3 blanks against an academy tie and then predator 2 more blanks...)

especially need to work on positioning the feedbacks. They're some of the most amazing upgrades in the game (imo) just because they give the Z-95 the unprecedented ability to threaten high agility arc-dodgers (and damage them even if they block, maybe even dealing that last bit of damage that would otherwise leave Soontir functioning at 100% capacity)

Having flown against two Soontir + mini-swarms, though, I really envy the Tie Fighters (especially since scum has no howlie equivilent) and have been wondering if four blacksuns + feedbacks is the way to go, but losing a whole Z is really hard to swallow (You do get to buff up xizor to either 40 points with sensors or 38 with Vi + virago + fcs and get a 98 point bid)

It's a bit sad, but I don't think there are any scum generics that work really well with Xizor save the Zs. The Y-wings are bulky, but they just don't have as much presence and don't afford Xizor the same range of movement.

I have been playing with 4. It is easy to pick any faction and use a 4-ship miniswarm at 48-52 points (ties or z-95), depending on PS bid, and then playing around with the other 48-52 points to make a superstar or upgrade/trade miniswarm ships.

I had great success this sunday with the following list:

  • Dash Rendar + Predator + Recon Specialist + Mangler Cannon + Outrider Title
  • 4 x Bandits
  • Total: 99 points

Went 4-0 with a MoV of 704!

It's not 5 Bandits, but you could tweak it to the following:

  • Wild Space Fringer + Mangler Cannon + Outrider Title
  • 5 x Bandits
  • Total: 99 points

I've actually used something similar to your second list, except instead of an Outrider Mangler I took a Fringer with Recon Spec and Heavy Laser Cannon. Did some great sniping, and then got focus-fired while the Headhunters cleaned the map.

I love Recon Specialist on YT-2400. Almost as much as I love Mangler + Outrider.

The two of them together is amazing if you're able to stay at range 3, taking shots without giving the defender an extra die while getting an extra die yourself!

I took first place in a SC with this :

  • Wild Space Fringer + Mangler Cannon + Outrider + Recon Specialist
  • Airen Cracken + Veteran Instincts + Concussion Missiles
  • Bandit Squadron Pilot + Homing Missiles
  • Bandit Squadron Pilot + Homing Missiles

Cracken passing 2 actions thanks to Cluster Missiles, allowing both Bandits to fire their Homing Missiles with TL + Focus is awesome!

And the WSF is a very effective closer for it's price!

The Fringer is easily one of my favourite ships, especially now that turrets aren't quite as "necessary" as they had been. I was always a huge fan of the BH Firespray with RecSpec, and with the dial on the Fringer it was a natural move. I like to save the extra two points and just use the HLC out the front, with the primary turret for emergency cases or parting shots, but I can see how the Mangler would make for a solid PS2 turret. Especially with two focus tokens!

(40) Corran Horn - VI, R3-A2, FCS

Use this to double-stress whatever problem ship the Zs can't deal with, like a Soontir or Whisper. I came with a bunch of these at 40 points to use with my 4 Prototype mini-swarm, which is also 60 points.

(40) Ten Numb - VI, Ion Cannon, Tactician/E2, FCS

(35) Luke Skywalker - VI, R3-A2, Engine (5 points lets you upgrade to Talas)

With Wave 6, you could also go with 2 Golds with Autoblaster Turrets.

Seeing my double IG list struggle with arc dodgers this came to mind;

IG-88C (36)
Predator (3)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Autothrusters (2)

Binayre Pirate (12) x4
Feedback Array (2)

It seems to counter the 3 corners of the meta pretty well. Arc dodgers get zapped by the pirates, fat turrets get lot's of Z's and autothursters to deal with and swarms first have face off with the Z mini swarm and after they lose some of their ships they need to get the Agressor in arc.

Probably going to fly this list my next game.

Rebel style 4 fighter block + a flanker looks really good with scum. 2Z's and 2Y's + One of the named starvipers is also something I want to try soon.

Oh boy, way too much time spent figuring out how to spend 40 points.

Half of these probably wouldn't pull their weight but I'm still intent on trying them out!

This weekend I ran five naked Bandits with Etahn A'Baht w/ PTL, Advanced Sensors, and an R2 astromech at a tournament. Worked pretty well, made the top four. Most people tried to focus on getting Etahn down first, but Focus + Evade makes that difficult. Only guy that beat me lucked out and I bumped Etahn with a stress relieving green, leaving him to die that round.

When you start landing shots on an unshielded ship, it snowballs quickly to their doom. And with all the blockers, you run a solid shot at action denying goodness. There's little more satisfying than catching and already stressed IG from behind, near the edge of the board, and hitting him with a crit that makes all hard turns red.
