The Ready action and the Tactician ability

By kjakan, in Doom

With a Ready action you get to place an Order on your Marine and either move or attack. But do you place the Order marker at the start of the turn or during the turn?

The above is an issue with the Tactician ability and the Aim Order. The Aim Order is lost if you move, which really isn't a problem for any Marine that's decided to use his Ready (Aim): Attack. But a tactician can throw in a move in there as well. He thus appears to have the following options:

  • Ready (Aim): Attack + Move
  • Ready (Aim): Move + Attack

But if he is forced to place the Order at the start of his turn then he is effectively limited to attacking before moving as the Aim Order is lost if he moves.

Anytime you want. Tactician is generally

Ready: Move, give Aim, attack (using Aim). Tactician is a superb card for a Marine with BFG. Other option is Move, Attack, give order (Guard or Dodge or even Aim to another Marine).

In that case I can't really see the restriction on the Aim Order come into play: you lose the Order if you move 1 or more squares.

The Marine that takes a Ready (Aim) action will certainly use the Order to make an immediate attack. If he has the Tactician ability, he'll move up to 4 squares, place the Order counter, use the Order counter for an attack and then move the remainder of his move.

If it's one thing I've noticed about FFGames, it is that they are very thorough in their rules. Including the movement restriction on the Aim Order seems oddly superfluous.

See, the thing is, without Tactician, you need to take the Ready action, so you'll either Attack + Order or Move + Order. So your options are to attack once, Aimed (or slap Guard down) or move and give yourself Aim, to use on your next turn, attacking first moving second (or Unloading). The latter tactic is often used with the BFG, move next to a door and give yourself Aim. Next turn, another Marine opens the door for you (of course, need 2+ Marines), now you can get in an Aimed Shot. Trouble comes from Hell Knight, Earthquake Invader card, which can move you while you're holding the Aim order on the Invader turn.
