Wookiee Priming Question

By Raine, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Been scratching my head at how to start with my wookiees here...

  1. Should I start with a Black Prime, and lighten my way up through the fur?
  2. Should I start with a White Prime, and darken through washes?
  3. Should I dual prime (black initially, and then hit the upper 45 with white), and then work it from there?

It's the fur texture that's making me ponder this action.

Both I wish to keep with the light and dark browns of Chewbacca, though with Gaarkhan, I'll be incorporating some red patches as well.

Any opinions or suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

I did a white primer. Based it with a mid-dark brown. Washed with a brown shade followed by a black shade. Then drybrushed one shade lighter than the base coat

I did black undercoat then a medium brown base. Then a...red dry brush(as the pic of the hero Wookie looks to have reddish hair to me). Then did earth a Nuln Oil or Arthax Earthshade wash(forgot which). Turned out a bit too deep a red. Not completly happy with it but it will stand apart from Chewie when I get him.

I did the agrax first but the recesses didn't get dark enough that's why I went over with nuln

How did it end up? Do you have a photo?

I'm thinking of yellow + dark brown wash and no dry brush.

I primed white, then did rynox hide base, then dry brushed scrag brown and mixed some darker and lighter browns to dry brush as well. Pretty happy with the result though the photo doesnt really show it well.

I primed with a light grey, then airbrushed the fur colours on, finished all the other details, ( including the base ) and the did pinpoint oil wash with Burnt Umber and Lamp Black for shading.

Sorry my phone isnt the greatest for taking pics
