getting back in advice

By rickert, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I used to play the game a lot but not dsince it became an LCG. How difficult (also expensive) would it be to bec ome involved now? ASre all of the cards still generally available since the LCG started? Is it necessary to buy multiple chapter packs to remain competitive?

Thanks for any help.

All of the LCG cards are still generally available. It is not hard to find them. And you do not necessarily need to buy multiples of each chapter pack (or even buy any of some) in order to build decks that you feel good about playing, although which chapter packs to buy will depend a lot on the House you want to play and the way you want to play them.

I'll probably get in trouble for saying this (again), but in terms of "remaining competitive," it's not so much of a concern. There really isn't anything to "remain competitive" for. The game is without a particularly noteworthy organized play program and has thus taken on a very local. There really isn't a lot of "cross pollination" or traveling between metas. Even at Gencon this year (24 players in the Joust championship), there were only 3-4 "metas" represented, and the difference in "local philosophy" was actually quite pronounced when you looked at the decks.

So remaining "competitive" is really a local thing that depends on who you play with more than the cards you own.

Wow - there's a blast from the past. Rickert goes back farther than almost any of us - save maybe Rings and Ktom.

Ktom has the right of it - you're really only looking at competing locally. The sea has been drained - we're all fish of relative sizes swimming in locla ponds these days.

Thanks for remembering Stag Lord. I wish I still had every card I ever purchased for this game, though I understand for tournament purposes, even local ones, that many wouldn't be allowed. It sounds like I don't need to purchase every pack but that they are generally available, which is good. Now if I can only find some players within an hour's drive or so then I will definitely be getting back in.

Just for the record, I was part of FFG's demo team at GenCon the year this game was introduced. I believe Origins was the first place it was shown. I took a demo there and fell in love with it. I was there doing demos of Warlord for AEG. I talked to FFG about doing demos at GenCon and they hired me. It was a fun con.
