Interesting history of the HWK-290

By Hobbyist, in X-Wing

Found out that the only HWK pilot in the game who has a different ship is Torkil Mux. Every other pilot, rebel scum or scum & villainy, is piloting the Moldy Crow.

Roark Garnet inherits it from his dead sister, eventually selling it to grappa the hut to pay a debt. It gets stolen by Dace Bonearm, and gets abandoned somewhere as a decoy. It eventually falls into the hands of Palob Godalhi, who ended up giving up the freighter to the Rebels. From there it gets acquired by Kyle Katarn, but his partner Jan Ors ends up doing most of the Piloting.

So I guess it makes sense that the Moldy Crow title isn't rebel only.

For a game of pass the parcel I think jan ors got ripped off.

I just hope it got cleaned a few times.

Probably not. That's how it earned its name. Used to just be "The Crow".

Next we'll see the Ravens claw in all of its not-glory.

Is it just me or does it seem small to be a cargo ship?

And what's wrong with the Claw? I did play Outcast first so I'm slightly more biased towards the Claw, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

it also makes sense that moldy crow is so auto-include

Think of it more like a pickup truck... but a really nice one with an extended cab.

Just because its only freight happens to be 'spies' doesn't make it something besides a freighter.

It's not really a freighter so much as it is a high-speed courier. This makes it ideal for spies and smugglers.

And organ deliveries.

Lol, high-speed...not in this game!

Yeah... FFG got about 0 right with the HWK. I understand they wanted to make a small base shuttle counterpart for the Rebels. But something is not right when the YTs are out flying the HWK.

Ew.

Uh, HWK doesn't look fast though. Then again, neither does the Falcon. I'm so bitter about the Falcon's dial.

Also, medal of honor for educating the masses.

In the Star Wars RPG game and Wookiepidea, the HWK 290 is listed as a fast and maneuverable small freighter designed for the upscale client. Instead of weapons, it used its speed and maneuverability to its defense.

I don't think the dial represents this description.

I understand they wanted to make a small base shuttle counterpart for the Rebels.

It seems more likely to me that they wanted to make a large base shuttle counterpart for the rebels but then were caught flat footed when Lucasfilm told them what the official size of the hwk was. Everything about the ship screams "rebel equivalent of the shuttle".

Except they got the most important part right. The Size. Thanks to FFG, we have a tangible, 100% canon verified model of how big The Crow is supposed to be. It is an utterly undeniable source. They fixed a 10+ year old problem.

It is a sluggish ship in XWMG, and I feel that it is honestly a bit TOO sluggish, but with Nunb at the helm it's manageable. Otherwise they got right what they needed to, and have my eternal gratitude.

Looks like a Baudo-class star yacht.

I just hope it got cleaned a few times.

Just don't bust out the blacklight and you'll be fine.

Seems like I should make a Jackson Pollock joke here, but it just isn't coming.

FYI, the HWK-290 is slow compared to space superiority fighters and combat craft. It may well be plenty quick compared to other not-upgraded freighters (the YT series being famous for tweaks, including boosted engine performance and a lot more guns).

That said, I find it very fitting that the Moldy Crow specifically was the particular HWK-290 that so many of the named pilots wound up flying.
