New player, firespray defense suggestions?

By bendicott, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I just played my first game yesterday, and decided to pick up a firespray as my first model. I'm planning to run it with s/v Kath and I'm thinking I'll need to add some evasion to it, so I'm looking at either EU or EH + K4. I have neither, but plan on picking up both corresponding sets eventually. It looks like many people prefer EH + K4 for the firespray in general, but I'm wondering what people think for Kath, specifically, since boosting past her target is potentially more powerful for her than other pilots.

Recon Specialist is the to go firespray card for most situations, letting you spend tokens on offense and defense

For Scum, the K4 is so powerful that is sometimes takes that spot from Recon.

In Kath's case, I'd prefer the K4. Push the Limit +Engine will cover both your defense (focus + evade, boost + evade) and offense.

EH + K4 is oodles of fun, but it's more of a budget build (a mere 40 points on the mand merc.) Leaving your super Kath without tokens is rough

So K4, PTL and EU? Not cheap, but definitely a lot of options. I'll give it a try :D I was thinking of running N'Dru along side the firespray with lone wolf and cluster missiles; think it's too fragile? I tend to run in-your-face glass cannon builds in other games, but I don't have enough experience to guess how easily the two (plus whatever I have enough point left for; probably a second headhunter) will be gunned down. I also like the sound of the dual-firespray lists, but my LGS only had the one.

N'dru is free points for your opponent. PS 7 and no way to boost or barrel roll means he's not 'sneaky' enough to avoid fire. Your opponent will have little trouble removing him from the table (possibly even before he gets to fire cluster missiles).

YMMV of course...

N'dru is a fun little ship all tricked out. Most Wanted has quite a few good options to team up with Kath. You should be able to get 2 Binayre Pirates and a Hired thug Y wing with some upgrades out as well in 100 pts.

N'dru is like the backstabber of scum, he's amazing value if you get the 3 dice

the only difference is that Stabber doesn't let you overload him with upgrades, so you gotta be careful not to fall into that trap with n'dru. He loses all of his value once you start loading points onto him.

At most, I'd consider lone wolf

My personally favorite defensive upgrade for firesprays is a heavy laser cannon. That sounds silly, but Kath slinging 4 dice out of both ends lets you fly her more carefully with less worry about putting her butt facing enemies. She becomes a threat any direction, so you just need to worry about flying safely. Additionally, killing their ships really fast is a solid way to keep a firespray alive.

Don't forget that the Firespray has a native evade action. There's little reason not to use it if you're getting action economy elsewhere.

Rebel Captive is also a defensive upgrade in that it can force hard choices on your opponent.

Isn't that Imperial only?

Yes, Rebel Captive is Imperial Only.

I've had great success with two dual Firespray lists.

Imperial:

Bounty Hunter — Firespray-31 33
"Mangler" Cannon 4
Gunner 5
Engine Upgrade 4
Kath Scarlet — Firespray-31 38
Lone Wolf 2
Heavy Laser Cannon 7
Rebel Captive 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Scum:
Kath Scarlet (Scum) — Firespray-31 38
Calculation 1
"Mangler" Cannon 4
Recon Specialist 3
Inertial Dampeners 1
Engine Upgrade 4
Mandalorian Mercenary — Firespray-31 35
Lone Wolf 2
"Mangler" Cannon 4
Recon Specialist 3
Inertial Dampeners 1
Engine Upgrade 4
The general goal is to fly both of them spread out. Typically I'll start one of them in the middle and the other on one side. That allows Lone Wolf to be relevant for at least 3-4 rounds. The Recon Specialist with Calculation and a Mangler Canon can do some serious damage with both ships focus firing. The other side is that many people worry that Recon and EU conflict, and in fact, they play off each other well. It allows you to choose and keep the opponent guessing. With the K4\PTL combo, it is nearly 80-90% a give away how you'll be required to move.
I've defeated a named TIE swarm, a Fat Han & Coran (multiple times), and even a Soontir & Whisper list. The only time I've lost, in fact, is when I was relatively new and did an EU without thinking that my next move would fly me off the board. Oh well.
Base on your meta, if you have a lot of stress\control builds, then this may not work as well. Lone Wolf will still be relevant. It would also make the Imperial list better with Rebel Captive.
Just my experience. Good luck!!

So Manglers are pretty good on Firesprays? If you were to choose between a mangler or HLC which would you take?

Manglers are great on anything with a higher PS. You want the lower PS pilots to strip off the evade tokens and shields. Two ships with re-rolls firing Mangler canons closer to the end of a game is a closer. Add on that Calculation and you can get some serious damage.

Strategy is to go through initial attacks at range 3 so they don't get the extra defense die and you do. Next, either get them with Kath's phat booty or Mangler them with both ships again.

If you're fighting a swarm, you will need to kill 2 ships every 3 rounds. Preferably 1 ship per round.

On the Fat Han builds, do your best to isolate Han's wingman in 1-2 rounds with focus fire. If it's Coran, all the better. Then focus fire Han.

The biggest threat here is Chewy for obvious reasons. Another threat is a Fat Han with mini-swarm. Giving Han 2-3 rounds of attacks or a swarm 2-3 rounds of attacks is a challenge. You'll have to get creative with your flying.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the reason the Manglers are so good is because it's benefit is primarily two things. It removes the range-3 defense dice and acts as a closer. Both of which are key in a 2-ship build.

Not directly related to the original post of Firespray defense, but still applicable to the list.
