fleet commanders affect everyone out just their ship?

By omegalazarus, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

I'm usually good with rules, but I can't figure this out and I checked the book and searched the forums. Is there some rule that says that the fleet commander affects everyone or is he like any other crew that only affects the ship he is on and its interaction?

Tarkin is obvious in the wording that he affects the entire imp fleet including his ship. However, absent a rule, it seems dodonna would only choose face ups when his ship does damage.

I can see the logic of a special rule being there, but can't find it. The card's text itself isn't ambiguous. It is written like other crew, where the assumption it's that this only applies to that ship. I.E. Leia only shares her ship's command with others. So, I am wondering if there is a rule or if dodonna just isn't any good without a better ship or his obvious title combo. Since only a poor imp player would let you drain his shieds with all his engineering and redirects.

Dondonna effects enemy ships when they are dealt damage cards face up he doesn't care where the damage comes from.

There is no such general rule regarding commanders. Just follow what the card actualy says.

Leia has the text "When you ...", and the rule state that "you" on cards refere to the ship it is equiped to.

Dodonna says nothing about "you", it talks about what happens when an enemy ship is dealt a face up damage card. It says nothing about the source of the damage. So it applyes any time an enemy ship is dealt a face up damage card, even if it's not even a ship that did the damage (hitting an asteroid for example).

There is an early version of Dodonnas card floating around the net where his text is very different and talks about when friendly ships are attacking, but the version that is actualy shiped with the game is different. This has been known to cause confucion before.

Awesome, thanks! I thought it was that way, but wasn't sure. That explanation about the lack of"you" is prefect.

Actually the first few times a friend and I read Tarken we took it as it applies to all other friendly ships but after reading through the forum we decided that everyone else is seeing it as each friendly ship including his.

Dondonna is why Imperial ships do not fly into asteroids - ever!

I don't know if anyone else has found this, but I never put Dodonna on Dodonnas Pride. My friend playing the empire was baffled by this. He was under the assumption that Commanders only affect their ships as well. So he didn't like that I pulled 4 damage cards when Dodonnas pride shot at him and Dodonna was on a Neb. :P

Same with the Empire. I try to put Tarkin a ship that might not be as big of a target. Empire players seem to load up tarkin's ship. But then that ship is just worth that much more victory points. at the very least I try to even out the ships point upgrades. Destroying 1 loaded up ship could win the game for the Rebels.
