Will be playing 1st game this coming tuesday

By player243504, in Tide of Iron

I've just purchased TIDE OF IRON and read the manual 1.5 times.

I will be playing with a friend of mine but he hasn't read anything (too lazy)...therefore i will be force to explain the game to him as we go.

This will also be my 1st time playing. sorpresa.gif

Has anybody ever produce an example of a turn (action, command and status) in video format?

I searched on Youtube but did not find anything.

I figure if i saw a full turn then it would be easier to play.

Thanks in advance

You might want to read the rulebook a couple more times and also the earlier forum posts about rule questions. The forum at BGG can also be helpful on rule questions: www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22825

Its easier than it sounds reading the manual.

Do the set up and lay all the peices out. I have even thought about dropping out the "coins" and cards for simplifying the game for my son.

1) Look at the charts and decide what you want to do. If the scenario allows 2 units, pick a unit, fire (at full strength) or move and fire at half strength)

2) Fatigue that unit with a lightning marker

3) DO the same for the next unit

You roll you attack die based on the attack value of the chart. Soo...

If you havent moved

If you range is 4, and you have 4 units, with a firepower of 1...

Roll 4 black die

If defender is in open... he gets no defense. If he is in a building with 3 cover he rolls 3 dice

You hit on 5's and 6's, he defends on 5's and 6's

So if you roll 3 hits, and he defends 2, he loses one unit.

Take a scenario and simplify it. Use only infantry. Remove all the terrain if you want. The less confusing the better. Then play again with terrain. Then the next one add tanks.

The problem with this any many games is you are overwhelmed with so many unit types it gives you a headache

It also helps to write down the key points, your teaching points, as you read the rulebook. Be careful of terminology, ie squad vs unit. Playing it through by yourself is always a great idea before teaching a game.

I would print out the faq quick reference sheets.

You might want to make 100% sure without a doubt you understand line of sight as this is game breaking.

Play through a game on your own (boring but helpful, try a short one like Tiger hunt).

Don't read the book a few times before you play, have near absolute recall of everything:

what's the height rule for obstruciton? if the difference in elevation is 2 the los blockage is 1. If the elevation is 1 different the blockage is 2.
